In a world where infrastructure is code, CI is important. Yet most Continuous Integration platforms are targeted at software developers, making them a poor fit for "non-traditional" workflows like Configuration Management. Many people struggle to fit these workflows into existing CI systems. In this talk I'll explain why I believe CI is not a solved problem, and how Config Management Camp inspired to me to finally do something about it. I'll introduce Cyclid, a Configuration Management system that tries to take some of lessons we've learned from the past 5 years of Configuration Management and apply them to Continuous Integration.

It’s no coincidence that all the interest around DevOps today comes at a time when open source technologies and processes are so dominant in cloud computing, data storage and analysis, and--increasingly--in networking. Innovations in Linux and other projects, including containers, configuration management, and continuous integration, are what make DevOps workflows and portable application deployments possible. But it’s also the result of open source culture, practices, and the tools supporting those practices that have made iterative development and collaboration such a powerful model for creating great software in communities. And now, they’re also providing a template for how to develop and operate applications internally within enterprises. In this session, we will discuss how open source tools and practices can be applied to create effective DevOps workflows and practices.

At Systematic we are using Groovy technologies to build a fairly standard 4-tier Java web application for a customer. This lecture describes our experience. We will tell you about the choices we made, how we built up knowledge about Groovy, what our biggest mistake was, and how we dealt with it.
We used Grails for the user interface, pure Groovy for implementing web services, Geb for automating tests of the user interface, and Spock for automated tests in general. We will tell you where these technologies provided great benefits, and where they were the source of trouble and frustration.
This lecture does not presuppose deep knowledge about Grails and Groovy. It should be of interest to any professional software developer who is considering replacing Java with Grails and Groovy.
Systematic A/S is a Danish software house headquartered in Århus. We employ about 450 people in 7 nations. We provide solutions for the defence, healthcare and public sector.
Continuous Integration and CruiseControl history
CruiseControl was created in the early 2000s when Martin Fowler wrote an article about continuous integration (CI) and its benefits. This prompted Thoughtworks to develop CruiseControl to automate the CI process on a project they were working on. CruiseControl proved popular and was adopted by many other projects, leading to the creation of connectors to integrate it with various code repositories. Over time, CruiseControl expanded to support additional programming languages through projects like CruiseControl.Net and CruiseControl.rb. While CruiseControl helped advance the practice of CI, newer tools now exist to continue improving the CI process.

Software is increasingly playing a big part in scientific research, but in most cases the growth is organic. The life time of research software is often as short as the duration of a postdoctoral contract: Once the researcher moves on, custom-written niche code is frequently not well documented, components are not reusable, and the overall development effort is likely lost.
This is a case study in looking at the evolution of software for research in the field of genomics within my research group at the Department of Genetics at Cambridge University. While our research questions changed over the past decade, we moved from Perl code and regular expressions to R and statistical analysis, and from there to agent-based simulations in Java. Not only will I discuss the languages and tools used as well as the processes and how they have evolved over the years. It also covers the factors that influence the nature of the growth, such as funding, but also how 'open source' as a default has changed our development work. We also take a look into the future to see how we predict the software usage will grow.
Also, in presenting the problems and discussing possible solution, this talk will look at the role institutions play in helping address these issues. In particular the Software Sustainability Institute (SSI, http://software.ac.uk/) works in the UK to promote the development, maintenance and (re)use of research software.
The Eclipse Foundation, with the Science Working Group, works to facilitate software sharing and reuse. How can organisations like the SSI and Eclipse align their strategies and activities for maximum effect?

Many organizations are embracing cloud-native technologies, such as microservices, containers, and Kubernetes, but are struggling to adapt their developer experience (DevEx or DX) and continuous delivery processes. Failure to adapt leads to longer lead times for delivery, frustration for developers, and stability issues in production. Architects and technical leaders need to drive this change.
The developer experience with modern cloud-native technologies is very different than the classic enterprise experience of the 1990s or even the early cloud experiences of the 2000s. For example, it’s often no longer possible to spin up an entire application or system on local hardware, and the extra layers of abstract of containers and VMs make debugging and observing systems more challenging.
Daniel Bryant explores the core concepts of the cloud-native developer experience, introduces and compares several useful tools, and shares lessons learned from the trenches.
