3. WP3- Overall Description
 Science and innovation are at the heart of generating growth of the
agrifood industry. To help with this, the establishment of regular
communication between representatives of the private sector, the research
institute and technology-driven SMEs is of upmost importance to identify
common weaknesses and challenges that the food and water sector needs
to face to enhance research activities and innovation that would help,
both the research centre and the SMEs, to be more competitive in the
market by launching new products and increasing the exports in the EU.
Objectifs
 Establish dialogue on research and innovation with cooperatives, SME’s and
technology-driven enterprises of the water and food sector in order to
enhance the cooperation of INRAA with economic actors.
 Identify common goals, threats and challenges in the Algerian water and food
sector to increase the capacity to innovate and become more competitive in
the global economy.
 Give support to INRAA to set-up an innovation cluster in agrifood and water
of private enterprises In Algeria that should be encouraged to participate as a
member of the most relevant European food and water technological Platform
(ETPs).

7. Task 3.1 - Open Days (2) at INRAA to promote
link between researchers and SMEs

Objective
s
The objective of this task is to create an industry-led food-water innovation cluster
with the participation of INRAA researchers and the support of national public bodies
with the aim to enhance the cooperation between the country and the EU.
First session: Importance of the cooperation between INRAA and the private sector.
With this purpose, researchers will be engaged in knowledge transfer activities to set-
up new spin-off companies and start-ups. In this open-day session it will be
presented an example of wastewater treatment and water recuperation technologies
that could be adopted in Algeria taking into account the strong linkage between
water systems, agriculture and food industry.
The second session will be aimed to assess water and food sector externalities,
threats and opportunities which are to be integrated in the SWOT analysis (WP5/ T5.2)
and to identify common goals and challenges to promote innovation, particularly
focusing on processing, preservation, food safety and commercialisation of food
products (PREARR, MPMEPI)
The conclusions derived from this analysis will be summarised as a “concept note”
(D 3.1)., At the end of these sessions and industry-led innovation cluster will be
created and the committee of the cluster will be chosen (D 3.3).

8. Task 3.2 - Strategic Development Plan
for competitive research to face the
needs of regional markets

Objective
Support for INRAA to develop a strategic plan to foster competitive
research activities with market projection. The plan will include the
following points:
- The importance of a project management office.
- Technology watch and intellectual property rights.
- Valorization of research outcomes: knowledge transfer towards
industrial applications.
- Commercialization for spin-off and start-ups.
A proof of concept will be created to provide evidence of improved
research competitiveness that will help the internationalization of
INRAA in participating in FP7 programs and in exporting innovation
form the INRAA laboratories to the global marketplace.
