The Research team here at the Parramatta Heritage Centre has been produced this interactive touch table containing over 1500 soldiers from the local Parramatta district in Sydney, Australia.
The table is not a static display as it allows users to enter any stories they may have into the table and this is directed to a CMS in the cloud which we use to feed information back into the table.
The table is divided into two sections. One is an alphabetical list of 1500 soldiers, their stories, newspaper articles and enlistments records. The other is a subject based interface that lists soldiers by geographical origin, tells stories about World War One events, and allows access through subject headings such as ‘wounded’ or ‘killed in action’.
An individual soldiers record.
Resources linked to that soldier.
A newspaper article relating to Eric Coles.
His enlistment records
Hospital records
This is where viewers can add their own information about the soldiers. This is sent through a wifi dongle to our email address where we update the the content on an online CMS system and this is then uploaded back into the system on next restart. We also have groups of volunteers and would be happy to get more to work on groups of soldiers we have completed around 500 of 1500 entries. By 1 11 2018 we would like to have completed them all. Volunteers can work online/remotely on these projects through shared docs. We have had one of our volunteers working from Italy. However all content has to be done according tour set format we are not asking for comprehensive family histories for the table. Although we can ingest these into our collections database.
This is the screen where you can search by location.
results from pressing on parramatta location
You can also search on individual words.
This is the result for brothers in arms. Note the blue triangle this alerts people to the fact there is more information associated with that entry.
Lastly we have featured stories which are updated to conicide the the events which happened 100 years ago.
World War One (WW1) interactive touch table
The World War One interactive touch-table is the visitor experience delivered on the back of the Research Services team’s new online collaborative research of 1500 service men and women from the Parramatta region, listed in a book published by the Cumberland Argus in 1920. One of our volunteers even researched soldiers while staying with her family in Italy. Over 350 of the 1500 service men and women’s stories have been researched, edited and written, including the details and photographs and includes details of the records include embarkation, enrolment records and local newspaper articles about them.
A key feature of the interactive touch table is that it has been designed for visitors to have the opportunity to input their own information about soldiers which automatically updates to our database for our team to edit and publish. The table is mobile and has Wi-Fi so it can be displayed at other locations such as our local libraries and RSLs. This will assist in raising awareness of the sacrifices made by these amazing people and the terrifying and sometimes awe-inspiring events which dragged them across the globe to fight against Germany and her allies.
The touch-table was launched on 6 August 2014 and over the next four years until Armistice Day 1918 we hope to attract visitors, volunteers and interested researchers to contribute to our research.
