INTRODUCTION
KIDNEY DISEASE, ALSO KNOWN AS CHRONIC
KIDNEY DISEASE OR CKD, CAUSES MORE DEATHS
THAN BREAST CANCER OR PROSTATE CANCER
- NATIONAL KIDNEY FOUNDATION,
2021
INTRODUCTION
CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE (CKD) IS A MAJOR
GLOBAL PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM AND IS
PROJECTED TO BECOME THE 5TH HIGHEST
CONTRIBUTOR TO YEARS OF LIFE LOST BY 2040.
IT IS THE UNDER-RECOGNIZED PUBLIC HEALTH
CRISIS.
STATISTICS
• 37 million people in the U.S. (15% of the adult
population; more than 1 in 7 adults).
• Approximately 90% of those with kidney
disease don't know they have it.
• And 2 of 5 adults with severe kidney disease
don't know they have it.
STATISTICS
• 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. (approximately 80 million)
is at risk for kidney disease.
• Kidney disease is more common in women (14%)
than men (12%). But for every 2 women who
develop end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), 3
men's kidneys fail.
• Kidney disease is a leading cause of death in the
U.S.
STATISTICS
• About 1 in 2 people with very low kidney function
(not on dialysis) don't know they have kidney disease.
• Approximately 1 in 3 adults with diabetes and 1 in 5
adults with high blood pressure may have kidney
disease.
• COVID-19 is targeting people with kidney disease,
kidney transplant patients, and those at risk for
kidney disease.
VULNERABLE GROUP
1. DM AND CKD
High blood sugar from diabetes
Can damage blood vessels in the
kidneys
Damage the glomeruli
PREVENTION
2. HYPERTENSION AND CKD
can constrict and narrow the blood
vessels damages and weakens
throughout the body, including in the
kidneys
not able to remove all wastes and extra
fluid damage leading to kidney failure.
PREVENTION
3. HEART PROBLEM AND CKD
When the heart is no longer pumping efficiently
becomes congested with blood
causing pressure to build up in the main vein
connected to the kidneys
leading to congestion of blood in the kidneys
PREVENTION
4.OBESITY AND CKD
Extra weight forces the kidneys to
work harder and filter wastes above
the normal level.
Over time, this extra work increases
the risk for kidney disease.
PREVENTION
5. TOBACCO USE AND CKD
SMOKING
slows the blood flow
kidneys
increase in serum creatinine.
PREVENTION
CALL NATIONAL QUITLINE AT 1-800-QUITNOW
or 1-800-784-8669
6.OLD AGE AND CKD
Amount of kidney tissue decreases
kidney function diminishes
No. of filtering units (nephrons)
decreases
Nephrons filter waste material from the blood
Blood vessels supplying the kidneys can
become hardened
PREVENTION FOR VULNERABLE PEOPLE
1. Keep fit and avoid a sedentary lifestyle
2. Have a healthy balanced diet
3. Check & control your blood sugar levels
4. Check & control your B.P. levels
5. Drink appropriate fluid (8 cups, nearly 2 litres/ day)
6. Abstinence from tobacco consumption/ don’t smoke
7. Avoid regular intake of NSAIDS/pain killers
8. Get your kidney function checked
