Work!Telling Our Stories
Edited by Gaëlle McNeil for the
Nova Scotia Federation of Labour
“One day, I took my own coffee break—just shuffled over
to the shop and had my break. At first it was a big joke,
then more guys joined in…though no one admitted it was a
break. Then I started to call lunch, just for myself.”
~Ken Strong, Zombie Power Temporary
“So here I was, seven months pregnant, waddling on the
picket line, and then they moved us over to the court-
house, because it was just not safe. And then they tried to
bring in this busload of scabs. So…I said, ‘I’ll lie down in
front of the bus.’”
~Sandy Harding, Seven months pregnant,
waddling on the picket line
Our stories define and explain our lives, or perhaps
our stories become part of us—especially when they are
stories about our working lives. We find stories about work
where ever people gather: union halls, workplaces, coffee
shops, post offices, kitchen tables and campfires. Sharing
our experiences about work through the telling of stories is
a way of relating to each other.
Stories can locate us, educate us, and entertain us, and
through the telling of stories we can sometimes make
sense of our world and our place in it.
There is a need in the world for interesting stories for
adult learners told from a worker’s perspective. This book
tells a few of them.
“For tales are meant to be shared. If they’re
not told, they crumble into dust.”
~Joanna Crinion, Storyteller
This book and its companion manual for educators were devel-
oped by the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour Lighting the Way
Literacy Project as a resource for adult learners.
This project was made possible with funding support from the
Government of Canada’s Office of Literacy and Essential Skills.
