Word stress refers to emphasizing a specific syllable when pronouncing a word. It is achieved through making the stressed syllable longer, higher in pitch, or louder. There are two simple rules for word stress: a word can only have one stressed syllable, and stress is always placed on a vowel sound, not a consonant. Additionally, there are five basic rules for determining stress placement in words based on the syllable, such as stressing the first, last, second last, or third last syllable.
