It’s the Call You’ve Been Waiting For…
The Wolves are Calling You to The Toledo Zoo
Toledo, OH – Come see the endangered hunters that have inspired myths and
legends for centuries at the all-new Arctic Encounter Wolf Exhibit, opening
Friday, January 11, 2002 with the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 am. A unique
feature of this exhibit is a log cabin, which provides visitors with educational
interpretives and special viewing through the cabin windows. This will allow
visitors to learn about and enjoy the four gray wolf siblings in beautiful natural
surroundings who were born in April, 2001 at the Wildlife Science Center in
Minnesota.
Wolves have been pursued with more passion and determination than any other
animal in US history and nearly became extinct in the early part of the 20th
century. By 1973, wolves were finally protected by the Endangered Species Act but by that time they had
been exterminated from the lower 48 states with the exception of a few hundred found in the extreme
northeastern part of Minnesota.
However, recovery efforts have been very successful and their comeback has been attributed to a combination
of scientific research, conservation programs and education efforts that helped to change the public’s
perception of wolves. Wolf recovery efforts represent an opportunity to amend past mistakes and enhance our
understanding, not only of wolves, but also the delicate balance and complex interactions that occur in a
natural environment.
In addition to the Arctic Encounter Wolf Exhibit, visitors will also want to mark their calendars to return in
March for the opening of a complementary interpretive exhibit entitled Howl!. This indoor exhibit, located in the
Zoo’s historic Museum of Science, will feature a variety of information, dioramas and a few surprises!
The outdoor Arctic Encounter Wolf Exhibit will be open daily, 10 am – 4 pm, beginning Friday January 11,
2002. The Toledo Zoo is located on US 25 four miles south of downtown Toledo. For more information call
The Toledo Zoo at 419/385-5721 or visit www.toledozoo.org.
