2. A Lesson from King David
David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders
of thousands and commanders of hundreds. 2 He then said
to the whole assembly of Israel, ‘If it seems good to you
and if it is the will of the LORD our God, let us send word
far and wide to the rest of our people throughout the
territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites who
are with them in their towns and pasture-lands, to come and
join us. 3 Let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for
we did not enquire of[a] it[b] during the reign of Saul.’
4 The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it
seemed right to all the people.
3. Cultural Context
1 Sam 4:11 The ark of God was captured
5:6 …the people of Ashdod said, ‘The ark of the god of Israel
must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on
us and on Dagon our god.’ (same for Gath and Ekron)
6:7 ‘Now then, get a new cart ready
6:13 Now the people of Beth Shemesh were harvesting their
wheat in the valley, and when they looked up and saw
the ark, they rejoiced at the sight.
SO…
1 Chr 13:7 They moved the ark of God from Abinadab’s house
on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it.
4. That day, it didn’t end well…
1 Chr 13:9 When they came to the threshing-floor of Kidon,
Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the
oxen stumbled. 10 The LORD’s anger burned against Uzzah,
and he struck him down because he had put his hand on
the ark. So he died there before God.
13:12 David was afraid of God that day and asked, ‘How can I
ever bring the ark of God to me?’
5. Doing things God’s Way
King David didn’t move the Ark for three months
15:1 …he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a
tent for it. 2 Then David said, ‘No one but the Levites may
carry the ark of God, because the LORD chose them to
carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before him for
ever.’
They brought the ark of God and set it inside the tent that
David had pitched for it, and they presented burnt offerings
and fellowship offerings before God. 2 After David had
finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship
offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD.
6. Spiritual Growth
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in
you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
Ephesians 2
As for you, you were dead in
your transgressions and sins, 2 in
which you used to live when you
followed the ways of this world
and of the ruler of the kingdom of
the air, the spirit who is now at
work in those who are
disobedient. 3 All of us also lived
among them at one time,
gratifying the cravings of our
flesh[a] and following its desires
and thoughts. Like the rest, we
were by nature deserving of
wrath. 4 But because of his great
love for us, God, who is rich in
mercy, 5 made us alive with
Christ even when we were
dead in transgressions—it is
by grace you have been saved.
7. I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ
lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son
of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
1 Corinthians 3
Brothers and sisters, I could
not address you as people
who live by the Spirit but as
people who are still worldly—
mere infants in Christ.
Ephesians 4
…become mature, attaining to
the whole measure of the
fullness of Christ.
14 Then we will no longer be
infants, tossed back and forth
by the waves, and blown here
and there by every wind of
teaching and by the cunning
and craftiness of people in
their deceitful scheming.

9. So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to
live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in
the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
1 Corinthians 14
20 Brothers and sisters, stop
thinking like children. In
regard to evil be infants, but in
your thinking be adults.
Philippians 2
3 Do nothing out of selfish
ambition or vain conceit.
Rather, in humility value
others above yourselves,
4 not looking to your own
interests but each of you to the
interests of the others.

11. …we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of
him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body,
joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and
builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
Philippians 2
… if you have any
encouragement from being
united with Christ, if any
comfort from his love, if any
common sharing in the Spirit, if
any tenderness and
compassion, 2 then make my
joy complete by being like-
minded, having the same
love, being one in spirit and of
one mind. 3 Do nothing out of
selfish ambition or vain
conceit. Rather, in humility
value others above
yourselves, 4 not looking to
your own interests but each
of you to the interests of the

13. ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them
in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
