It is shifting power away from traditional media elites to ordinary people. There are four primary reasons for this shift: 1) new tools, 2) increased connectivity, 3) easier sharing, and 4) changing attitudes. A case study shows how an Al Jazeera cameraman in Chad was able to directly send breaking news footage to editors using new mobile technologies like smartphones, faster than traditional methods. New media allows for wider distribution through websites, mobile apps, and social media platforms, as well as contribution and conversation from audiences.
