Introduction
The quality of production in Sicily has taken leaps and bounds compared to some thirty years ago. Until the early
80’s Sicily was primarily producing vast quantities of bulk wine used for blending wines in the north of Italy and
often shipped as far as France.
The most significant changes in Sicily’s production took place in the mid-eighties thanks to a number of family
estates including Planeta, Donnafugata and Tasca d’Almerita, who still today are among the benchmarks of Sicilian
wines and place Sicily on the global map in terms of international acclaim and reliable quality production.
Over the past 20 years IRVOS (Istituto Regionale Vini e Olii Sicilia - Sicily’s Regional Institute for Wine and Olive
Oil) has contributed enormously to establishing vineyard management, research and clonal selection of its main
indigenous varietals such as Nero d’Avola, Carricante, Nerello Mascalese, Catarratto and Inzolia, which today
constitute the new image of Sicilian wines produced by a number of emerging quality wineries beginning to play a
growing role in the international arena.
The second important ‘Renaissance’ currently taking place with Sicilian wine is communicating this potential of
quality to the rest of the world. We are targeting international markets, taking part in international shows, as well as
organising events with importers and opinion leaders, in order to communicate the excellence of our wines and the
uniqueness of our territory.
Sicily today has 23 DOC areas of production and one DOCG, Cerasuolo di Vittoria. Sicily boasts a total of
112,725 ha. of vineyard, of which 71,967 ha, (63.8%) hectares are planted to white varietals and 40,508
hectares (35.9%) are planted to red varietals. The standard bearers by far of Sicilian wine in terms of plantings and
popularity is the red varietal Nero d’Avola and the indigenous white variety Catarratto.
Nero d’Avola does well in most of Sicily’s appellation areas, because it is a terroir wine, changing its character,
depending on where it is planted. If you are looking to produce a modern style of wine, characterized by a
rounded, fruity appeal and easy drinking, then Menfi and Sambuca in western Sicily are the best areas to plant
Nero d’Avola, whereas if you are looking for a more complex Cru showing elegance, aromas and acidity with good
ageing potential, then the area of Noto, Vittoria and Ragusa in the southeast are excellent areas. Contea di Sclafani
in the centre of Sicily is another area with excellent potential, yielding age-worthy structured wines with bold fruit.
The most recent trend-setter in Sicily can be found on the unique volcanic slopes of Etna. Its terraced vineyards of
ancient bush-trained vines produce wines of depth and finesse characterised by minerality and elegance, similar to
Burgundy wines. Top bottlings of Etna Rosso DOC are made from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio while
Etna Bianco DOC is made predominantly with Carricante grapes. These wines have gained a lot of attention on
account of their unique quality and subtle aromatic profile.

                   Sicilian Grape Varieties
Albanello
Albanello is one of the historic vines grown in the Syracuse district where it has gradually dwindled to a few specimens, whilst
some random stocks can still be found in the Ragusa vineyards. It is usually vinified together with other grapes. The wine is
particularly delicate, with a deep straw-yellow colour, a rich suite of aromas and a well-structured taste. Syracuse district.
Ansonica or Inzolia
It is one of the longest grown grapes in Sicily. Mentioned by Pliny by the name of “Irziola”, popularly known as “Inzolia-vranca”
to distinguish it from “Inzolia-nigra” and is also described by Cupani (1696) and Sestini (1760). Widely spread over the whole
island, it competes with other white wines and is frequently blended with Catarratto. Locally it is also consumed as a table grape.
A delicate wine when made as a single varietal with a greenish straw-yellow colour, scents characteristic of the grape, neutral to
the taste, quite full-bodied, good percentage of alcohol, balanced acidity and smoothness. All of Sicily, except the province of
Enna.
Carricante
Historical vine from the Etna area where it has been cultivated since time immemorial. Described by Sestini (1760) in his
memoirs about Mascali wines, its name is due to the high production it is able to give. Particularly fine wine, straw-yellow colour
with green tinges, good aromatic structure with sweet and floral aroma of herbs. It has a good taste structure, warm, full-bodied,
characterised by a high level of fixed acids which makes it particularly adaptable for wood aging and conservation. Province of
Catania.
Catarratto Bianco commune
Historical Sicilian vine which has been cultivated since time immemorial. It was popularly called “Catarratu vrancu”, described
by Cupani (1696) and Sestini (1760). Pastena (1970) cites foru catarratis cultivated in Sicily. Found all over the Island, its
cultivation is particularly wide in the provinces of Trapani and Palermo. Catarratto forms part of the composition of many white
Sicilian wines. The wine is straw-yellow coloured with a tendency to gold with a good aromatic profile with fruity smells and floral
notes, its taste is characterized by a strong presence of alcohol and a good structure, neutral in flavour, quite acidic and with a
tendency to a smooth taste. All of Sicily except the province of Enna.
Damaschino
Quoted by Mendola (1885), it is supposed to have arrived in Sicily during the Arabic domination, especially in the Trapani area.
It was used mostly for replanting vineyards in the Marsalese area after the phylloxera invasion. Its cultivation is restricted to the
provinces of Trapani and Agrigento. It is usually used to blend with other grapes. The wine is fine, early drinking, straw yellow,
with a delicate and pleasant bouquet, neutral flavour, quite harmonic. Not capable of much ageing. Province of Agrigento and
Trapani.
Grecanico Dorato
The origin of these grapes, cultivated for centuries in Sicily, is unknown. It is perhaps the same grape that Cupani (1696)
described as Sicilian grapes called “Grecani”. Historically, it is widespread in the provinces of Trapani and Agrigento. Scattered
plants can be found in many Sicilian vineyards. Fine wine with a golden yellow colour, quite alcoholic, with a neutral scent and
taste, fresh and harmonious. Provinces of Agrigento, Trapani and Palermo.

                                                                  vi
Malvasia di Lipari
It belongs to the large group of ‘Malvasie’ cultivated in Italy. Presumably introduced by the Greek colonizers in the 4th
century BC, it is mentioned in the works of numerous Roman authors. Cupani (1696) describes it with the name “Malvagia”,
from the vulgar “Marvascia”. Notwithstanding the name, the Malvasia of Lipari is cultivated above all on the island Salina
and to a much lesser degree on the other Aeolian islands; it is present also in a few vineyards in the Messina and Catania
territories. Traditionally vinified to produce the famous DOC Malvasia delle Lipari passito (sweet) wine. The grapes are picked
at the advanced stage of ripening; before being vinified they are laid out to dry on racks. The wine is aromatic, with intense
herbaceous and floral scents, notes of honey and dried apricots; the taste is sweet, warm and aromatic with balanced acidity
and taste. Province of Messina.
Minnella Bianca
Described by Sestini (1760), it has been cultivated for centuries exclusively in the Etna territory, where vines are still present
amongst Nerello Mascalese and Carricante vineyards. Its name derives from “Minna” (breast) such is the shape of the grapes. In
the past the grapes were used to give more softness to the Etna-area wines, which were typically rich in acidity and tannins.
Generally if forms part of the blend of the local wines of the Etna area. Vinified as a single varietal, it is a wine of a
straw yellow colour with a select range of aromas and a tendency towards a soft taste and little crispness. Provincia
di Catania.
Moscato Bianco
Belongs to the ‘Moscati’ group, dubbed by the ancients “Vitis Apianae” due to their sweetness and to the fact that it attracted
honey bees. Cupani (1657-1710) refers to a “Muscateddu Vrancu” as a synonym of the Vitis Apinae cited by Pliny. It has been
cultivated in the province of Syracuse since ancient times. It is thought to be linked to the ancient “Vinum Balintium” produced
with “Moscadello dolce” grapes and praised by Pliny, Fazello and other Roman historians. It is vinified to produce the Moscato
di Siracusa and the Moscato di Noto. When vinified naturally a lovely light golden wine is produced and a pleasant Moscato
aroma is obtained. Provinces of Siracusa and Ragusa.
Moscato d’Alessandria or Zibibbo
Belongs to the ‘Moscati’ group, dubbed by the ancients “Vitis Apianae” due to their sweetness and to the fact that it attracted
honey bees. Cultivated in Sicily presumably since Phoenician times, this variety was used especially as a table grape, both
fresh and dried; its name originates from the Arabic “Zibibbo”, still used in Sicily today to indicate preserved dried grapes.
Traditionally vinified to produce aromatic white wines, amongst which the important wines DOC Moscato and Moscato Passito
di Pantelleria. The latter is of an intense yellow colour, presenting inebriating scents of apricots, flowers, honey, when tasted it is
sweet, full-bodied, warm and sapid, with a balanced acidity and smoothness, pleasurably harmonic. It is used to produce dry
aromatic wines. Province of Trapani.

Red
Alicante or Grénache
Also known as “Granaccio”, it was probably brought to Sicily by both the French and the British in the 18th century. It is grown in
both the Catania and Messina districts. In the Etna vineyards it is still possible to find old ungrafted plants. Purple-red colour, with
grapey and fruity hints, a delicate taste, less full-bodied yet balanced and well-shaped; ideal for early consumption. Catania and
Messina districts.

                                                                  vii
Corinto Nero
Native of Greece, it grows in many vineyard areas in Europe, especially Greece and Turkey. In Sicily it is grown on the Aeolian
Islands, mainly on the island of Salina. Gallus (1595) refers to it as “dark sea grapes”, while Molon (1906) describes it as dark
Passerina. Cupani (1696), in his Hortus Catholicus and Phanphyton Siculum distinguishes three varieties of Corinto, commonly
known as Tuccarino, Tuccarineddu or Niuridduzzo and “Tuccarino cù cocci”. Cupani himself mentions sun-dried Corinto grapes,
referring to them as “Passulina del nostro Regno” (Raisins of our Reign). Its grapes, usually sun-dried on trellises, account for
5-8% of the composition of the DOC wine Malvasia delle Lipari. Made as single grape varietal, it produces a pale ruby red
wine, with intense, slightly spiced perfume, moderately full-bodied, generally soft. Province of Messina.
Frappato
In his memoirs about the Vittoria wines, Sestini describes it as a wine of uncertain origin. It is still cultivated in Vittoria and is
common in the area of Ragusa and Siracusa, generally in association with Nero d’Avola. It is not widespread in the other Sicilian
provinces. The grapes, when produced as a single varietal, make excellent wine with a ruby red colour, not too intense and
bright, strong wine aromas, fruity and flowery, full-bodied on average, balanced tannin, fresh and soft taste, very harmonious.
Provinces of Ragusa, Siracusa and Catania.
Nerello Cappuccio
Its name indicates the habit of the foliage hides the bunches like a cape. It is a very ancient vine cultivated with other vines
mainly in the provinces of Catania and Messina. It is a fine, ruby-coloured wine, with a winey, fruity aroma, good taste structure;
it is ideal for a wine for immediate consumption. When vinified with Nerello mascalese it produces long-lasting wines; it is also
used to produce DOC Etna Rosso and Etna rosato. Provinces of Catania, Messina, Agrigento and Enna.
Nerello Mascalese
It belongs to the historical group of the “Nigrelli” vines described by Sestini (1760) in his memoirs on wines from the county of
Mascali. Traditionally grown as a small bush, it is the most diffused vine in the Mount Etna area where it has been cultivated
since time immemorial. It presumably has ties with the ancient wines of Etna celebrated by Homer and Roman historians. The
wine is elegant and of a great character, with a tendency to be tannic, it is ruby red in colour with granite hues; the excellent
structure and the good aromatic structure make it suitable for ageing. Provinces of Catania, Messina, Agrigento and Enna.
Nero d’Avola
Mentioned by Cupani (1696), but it is still uncertain when it dates back to. It is linked to the ancient wines that went by the
names of “Calabresi di Augusta” and “Vini di Vittoria”. The name Calabrese derives presumably from the two old Sicilian words
“Calea”-“Aulisi”, or grape of Avola, referring to the place where it was originally picked. It is the king of Sicilian grapes, grown
in all areas of the island, where it finds the best place to express its qualities. The wines distinguish themselves from one another
depending on the cultivation area of the vine. They have rich personalities, of intense ruby red colour, an excellent array of
aromas with fruity, floral and spicy notes, very well-structured taste, tannic, full-bodied, balanced acidity and smoothness, and
overall very harmonic. All of Sicily.
Nocera
A very similar vine to the Nerelli varieties. It has traditionally been grown in the area of Messina since ancient times. It is believed
to be linked to the historic “Mamertinum” wines and the “Zancle” wines which were praised by ancient Romans. Real traces
of ancient history can be found in the vineyards of the province of Messina. Plants are also present sparsely in the vineyards
of the provinces of Catania, Syracuse and Ragusa. The wine obtained from single grape is of a strong ruby red colour with
purple touches, a good suite of aromas, full-bodied, rich in fixed acid, alcohol and tannins. Provinces of Messina, Catania and
Siracusa.
Perricone
This grape is typical of Western Sicily where growing has taken place since time immemorial. It is cultivated in limited quantities
in the provinces of Palermo and Trapani; it is also found in the provinces of Agrigento and Messina. Wine made with single
grape giving a quite intense ruby red colour, typical wine-like fragrance, quite full-bodied, moderately tannic, overall well-
balanced, ready to consume. Provinces of Agrigento, Palermo and Trapani.

Tenimenti Zabù is a young, 5 year old company located in one of the most historic areas for viticulture in the
comune of Sambuca di Sicilia in Sicily. The vineyards are situated on the hills surrounding the Arancio lake, which
provides a vital source during the hottest months and allows the grapes to ripen perfectly. In 2010, Farnese joined
forces with a local cooperative winery, providing the necessary knowledge and technical assistance from winemaker
Filippo Baccalaro to produce excellent quality wines from the fantastic vineyards in the area.

In 1830, two brothers Don Lucio and Don Carmelo Mastrogiovanni Tasca bought the Regaleali estate, formerly a
feudal domain of 1200 ha. in the countryside surrounding Sclafani.
Tasca d’Almerita was first in Sicily to introduce short pruning techniques to obtain grapes of superior quality through
smaller yields per hectare, first to exploit local Inzolia and Nero d’Avola vines, to use moderate aging in barrels (in
the 1970’s with Nero d’Avola) and to experiment with Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the use of soft
presses and temperature-controlled fermentation vats for the preservation of aromatic richness.
Regaleali, the main hub, extends across for 500 hectares amidst a dramatic hilly landscape at the edge of the
provinces of Palermo and Caltanissetta. Then there is Mozia in the province of Trapani with Grillo vineyards,
Capofaro on Salina island with Malvasia and the Sciarananova and Boccadorzo estates on Etna as well as the Sallier
de la Tour estate mainly devoted to Syrah (Shiraz) and Viognier.

The history of Spadafora bottled wine began over twenty years ago, in the summer of 1988, when my father
decided it would be better to explore another world, to see how it was. So from our land in Mussomeli, a family-
owned property in inland Sicily where they grew wheat, I moved to Virzì to take care of the vineyards and make wine
from the grapes.
I immediately became passionate about it, thinking about what my father would like and what I wanted.
After tasting and testing, I decided in 1993 that I would only produce wine from grapes grown on this land, and I
produced our first bottle, which I naturally named after my father: Don Pietro.

“Villa Scaminaci” is a trademark that belongs to the Cooperativa Agricola “Madonna del Piraino” which was created
in 2006 according to the approval of the regulations for the DOC Salaparuta wines by the Ministry of Agriculture and
        Forestry.
The policy followed by the administrative Council of the cooperative has, from the very first year of production, been
one of transparency, ethical standards and clarity as regards the producer members and above all the final consumer.
The wines which the cooperative decided to market are from local grape varieties. The principal white varieties with
a long history in the province of Trapani are Catarratto and Grillo and for the red, the Nero d’Avola, historically
connected with Sicily and originating from the west side of the island but also producing positive results in the
Salaparuta area. Also grown are the international varieties of Chardonnay, Viognier, Merlot and Syrah.

Planeta is a Sicilian wine company established in 1995. Planeta is not just one but six ways of expressing the land
in six different aspects. This is the number of estates which produce their wine, of the boutique wineries each with
their project of research into and making the most of the land. Planeta wineries are: Ulmo at Sambuca di Sicilia
(AG), Dispensa at Menfi (AG), Dorilli at Vittoria (RG), Buonivini at Noto (SR), Sciara Nuova on Etna at Castiglione
di Sicilia (CT) and finally La Baronia at Capo Milazzo (ME).
Planeta’s project, a patient and meticulous study which is never hurried, has turned as much to the past as to
the future. On one side a deep link with the oldest enological Sicilian traditions with their heritage of indigenous
varieties, Grecanico, Carricante, Moscato di Noto, Frappato, Nerello Mascalese and Nero d’Avola. On the
other, an arena where the greatest producers of the five continents are appraised for the varieties Chardonnay,
Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet, great classics of international enology interpreted by a territory which unmistakably
marks them. There is also the most inspired and visionary experimentation with varieties which has permitted the
appearance of a revolutionary Fiano for the first time in Sicily.

The Feudo di Santa Tresa is a beautiful 50 hectare estate dating back to the 17th century being established in 1697
and now run on an organic basis. Situated in Vittoria, the name Santa Tresa derives from the Sicilian pronunciation,
which has shortened the name Teresa to Tresa. Nature is bountiful here, with the Sicilian sun perfectly ripening the
best fruits in the Mediterranean basin. Lying close to the Mediterranean, Feudo di Santa Tresa’s vineyards benefit from
cooling sea breezes and the effect the salt water has on the composition of the special red soil, rich in iron, which is
known as ‘ferreti.’

The Duca di Salaparuta group comprises three historic brands which represent Sicily and Italy worldwide: Corvo
and Duca di Salaparuta, dating back to 1824, and Florio, which dates from 1833. Acquired by Illva Saronno
Holding and brought together in a single group, the two historic companies now constitute the leading privately-
owned wine producing group in Sicily and their estates and cellars provide a key chapter in the history of Sicily.
The story of the company’s estates began with the selection of the specific areas of land: Suor Marchesa in Riesi,
Risignolo in Salemi and Vajasindi on the slopes of Mount Etna. The experimental innovations, closely bound to the
lands of Sicily, have led to what to can only be described as iconic wines such as Duca Enrico, the first fully Nero
d’Avola wine, while others provide new and interesting enological challenges like Nawàri, the first Pinot Nero wine
from Mount Etna. Each Duca di Salaparuta wine is, in essence, the expression of specific local areas and of a long
        wine-making tradition.

The tradition of wine making in the Russo family began in the 1860’s and has been passed on from father to son.
The Russo family is dedicated exclusively to the cultivation of their own vineyards between 700m. and 1000m. asl
on the slopes of Etna located around the small village of Solicchiata (Castiglione di Sicilia)on the northwestern side
of Mount Etna National Park.
In 1955, Don Ciccio (Francesco), Vincenzo’s father founded the present wine company and built the first production
plant where the wines were produced, bottled and sold.
Cantine Russo specialises in the cultivation of indigenous grape varieties, Nerello Mascalese /Nerello Cappuccio
and Carricante /Catarratto, from these grapes they produce “Rampante” Etna DOP red and white wines.
They have expanded to add other important grape varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Insolia, Syrah and Chardonnay.

The Rapitala estate covers 225 ha. on gentle hills between 300m. and 600m. asl above Alcamo with alternating
clay and sand soils. The perfect exposure and the composition of the soil make it ideal for the cultivation of the
finest vine varieties. Rapitalà is an authentic name, it comes from the Arabic, Rabidh-Allah “river of Allah” for the
stream which flows through the vineyards, and testifies that this land has been cultivated since antiquity.
Frenchman, Hugues Bernard de la Gatinais, married Gigi Guarrasi, heiress to a prominent Palermo family in 1968.
They engaged in a passionate adventure, the reconstruction of the family cellar destroyed earlier by the Belice valley
earthquake. French varietals were planted alongside autochthonous ones and today, their son Laurent continues the
work his parents started with the same care and passion.
The philosophy of Rapitalà requires wines which retain the flavours and scents of the Sicilian terroir, without
neglecting the elegance of the taste of the most refined palates.

The feudal property of Feudo Principi di Butera nearby Caltanisetta is an ambitious investment of the Zonin family
in Sicily. The ancient estate includes 320 hectares of land of which 180 are planted with vineyards. The historic
domaine now boasts state of the art winemaking equipment for the world famous Sicilian wines. That of Feudo
Principi di Butera is a privileged terroir: the hillsides here are subject to the strong, warm light from the south and
the breezes that blow in from the nearby sea. Feudo Principi di Butera is one of Sicily’s outstanding wineries and it
has been responsible for launching Nero d’Avola and Insolia, the two most representative indigenous varieties of
the island, on international markets.

To describe the character of a land as generous as that of western Sicily, of Erice, of its wines, of what these
wines are able to express, is a superb challenge even for one who has lived the experience of these characteristic
vineyards for generations. The choice to liken them to wind, in one instance as delicate as a breeze, in another
impetuous and rough like the dominant winds, is to pay homage to the faithful presence of these winds from the
eight directions of the horizon that constitute of the spirit of this land. Ottoventi and its wines want to bring you, with
a delicate yet intense breeze, a sensory experience in taste and smell that only grapes cultivated and worked with
know-how are able to generate.

The tie between the Nicosia family and wine began in the late 1800’s in Trecastagni on the eastern slopes of
Mt. Etna. Today Nicosia is one of the most important Sicilian wine producers with a remarkable inclination for
innovation and a well-defined production philosophy. Promoting its own territory, fostering the finest native vines
and international varieties that adapt best to the Sicilian ‘terroir’, increasing the quality of the raw materials through
a careful selection of grapes and an ongoing dedication to the work performed in the wine cellar.

Barone Montalto began in 2000 in Santa Ninfa, Sicily, in the province of Trapani. A major objective has
distinguished us from the rest: to put a strong and wealthy land in the public eye and introduce its distinctive and
authentic wines, making them recognized and appreciated throughout the world. Our intense and ambitious
passion for this land has been the common denominator in the realization of our project. This is how the Montalto
wines came to be, from great tradition and young character, which are continuously admired by an ever wider
and more attentive audience of consumers. Barone Montalto has grown over the years. Our vineyards have
grown along with the Sicilian territory. In addition, the satisfaction of those who continue to choose our wines
has increased and consequently increased our gratification, which matches our commitment. Barone Montalto
is committed to both research and experimentation. Because of this, we have been able to pass new milestones,
making more people familiar with the great tradition of authentic Sicilian wines.

Antonio Moretti became fascinated by the Val di Noto in the late ‘90’s and decided it would be the perfect place for
his next oenological challenge. In 2000 he began his first acquisitions and pieced together more than 50 properties
with a combined 50 ha. of vines, some more than 30 years old and located on different soil types at different
elevations, guaranteeing an overall balance.
The Alberello, or bush style, adopted in Feudo Maccari is one of the oldest and most natural forms of high-density
vine cultivation and ideal for hot, windy climates but it has high maintenance costs. Vineyards are usually planted at
a density of 5,555 vines/ha. bringing significant quality to both grapes and wine.
Nero d’Avola gives the best expression of this territory and is a grape with ancient traditions and particularly
appreciated today for its impressive characteristics of structure, richness, roundedness of fruit and its capability for
lengthy cellaring.

For generations on fifty hectares cultivated in bio-organic methods on rolling hills in Partinico, Sicily, one family has
continued the original vision and success of their grandfather Vincenzo. The success of Limonio is the great attention
to the care of those trees until the final preparation of the product made with simple ingredients, free of preservatives
or chemical additives, genuine flavours unaltered by time. Limonio produces liqueurs made from lemon, prickly
pear, mandarin, orange, black mulberry, bay, cinnamon and spice as well as wine and extra virgin olive oil.

Thirty hectares of vineyards and olive groves on the gentle slopes that roll down to the Sea of Africa on volcanic
soils in which, since time immemorial, man has cultivated the vine become an expression of both history and terroir.
As well as the local autochthonous grapes, the winery grows international varieties which have found an ideal
habitat in this area; a temperate winter climate, hot, dry summers, an extraordinary luminosity and an almost
obsessive attention to cultivation allows the plants to yield strong, healthy fruit from which we can obtain wines of
        great quality.
The cellar is located at Sciacca in an old country hamlet which surrounds a 14th century observation tower
belonging to the Testoni family. Maruzza Testoni and her husband Ascanio De Gregorio together with their children
have repaired the tower with the intention of keeping history alive.

Our Cuprani’ farm is a fertile estate of 217 hectares situated on the slopes of Nebrodi in a setting of great natural
beauty and includes 17 ha. of vineyard. It is still a pristine corner of the real Sicily which it is said, since as far back
as 1825, holds the story of five generations of family and of our strong, unbreakable and traditional relationship
with this generous land. Cuprani hosts a variety of plantations: vineyards, citrus groves, chestnut, hazelnut and even
forest, but always and of all the crops, olives and grapes are both an important element of which we are particulary
proud.

Baglio dei Fenicotteri is located in the southernmost part of Sicily between Noto and Pachino, and originates from
the evolution of a family tradition deeply rooted in the local territory where the vineyards and olive trees find their
        ideal natural conditions.
The company’s aim is passionately devoted to the growing of local varieties – most precisely Nero d’Avola and the
Moscato di Noto. Since 1997, all of the company’s produce is made to a system of controlled and certified organic
        agriculture.
Domination of this area has been numerous: variously by Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs,
Normans, Aragonese and Bourbons. All of whom, in the course of centuries, have fought over this fertile soil
exposed to the sun with a mild winter climate and set in a propitious geographical position at the crossroads of
Europe, Asia and Africa in the centre of the Mediterranean.
The trademark Baglio dei Fenicotteri is created from the stylization of the body of two flamingos (“fenicotteri” in Italian).

The Agricultural Estate Disisa is situated in the territory of Monreale (a province of Palermo), at about 400-500m. asl.
The business centre, the dominant part of the estate, is near an old Saracen tower, restored by the Di Lorenzo
family. From this tower the Saracens controlled, as it is still possible to see today, the whole territory of the Jato and
the Belice which extends from the mountains of the province of Corleone to the Gulf of Castellammare.
The Estate extends for 400 hectares, of which 180 ha. are vineyards situated in the area of Alcamo DOC and
Monreale DOC. Since 1970, the Di Lorenzo family, with the cooperation of the Istituto Regionale della Vite e del
Vino, have carried out a large-scale experimentation to test the adaptability of the most important national and
international grape varieties to the Sicilian soil and climate.

Vineyard area: 30 hectares Region: Eloro DOC (Noto Area)
Annual production: 70,000 bottles Grapes: Nero d’Avola, Inzolia, Syrah, Merlot
The Curtos boast a very ancient French origin, dating back to 1030, when their ancestor, Pietro, was granted by
Emperor Corrado the “Salico” the County of Omazzo and some of the nearby lands. Towards the end of the 16th
century the family moved to Spaccaforno where ancient documents prove their status of landowners. The Curtos
are viticulturists since 1670 and they still own 200 hectares of which 30 ha. are planted with vineyards. Towards the
end of the 20th century, the estate began to focus on wine making seriously. They turned the 50 year old “alberello
“vineyard into a key plantation, planted new vineyards and created a new vinification cellar equipped with the most
modern wine-making technologies.
The cellar is located in the beautiful setting of Villa Sulla (18th century) near Ispica, in a spectacular position among
vineyards, citrus groves, olive groves, carob groves and enclosed by the characteristic dry walls of the Modica area
and by numerous necropoli. The soil of the estate has a very calcareous nature and it is all part of the Eloro D.O.C.
area, near Pachino, not far from Avola, the original town of the “Nero d’Avola” grape variety. This is the most
luminous and the hottest area of Italy which also enjoys the benefit of the Mediterranean sea breeze. The excellent
quality of the grapes obtained thanks to the above described climatic conditions turn eventually into very elegant
and high class wines.

Our vineyards are in western Sicily, 10/15 km from the sea at 300/400 metres above sea level and receive all the
benefits of the sea breeze. They are planted to facilitate solar radiation and allow a perfect layout of buds and fruit.
The soils are alkaline, calcareous and loam. These are properties that allow the development of the organoleptic
qualities belonging to the grapes. The richness of this area is also historical and cultural and makes us proud to say
that this was the scene of wonderful mythological story characters such as: Minos, Zeus’s son and powerful king of
Crete and Maze, the brilliant engineer and creator of the mysterious labyrinth of Knossos.

Colomba Bianca Winery was founded in 1970 as a co-operative between wine growers from the south-western
area of Sicily in the Trapani province. At present, Colomba Bianca is the largest Sicilian coop, with 2118 growers
cultivating around 8,100 ha. of vineyards across the provinces of Trapani, Palermo and Agrigento and with 5
        wineries.
The vineyards are located in different territories having distinct pedoclimatic conditions, spanning from coastal areas
inland, up to an altitude of 700m. asl. Moreover, the company is expanding production derived from organically
        grown grapes.
Our wine growers are assisted and advised all year round in order to obtain grapes that express the utmost
potential of each terroir. Every cellar in the group is specialized in the treatment of specific varieties which allows for
the best expression of the individual quality potential of our grapes and our zones and microclimates.

Mountain viticulture. Our lands lie at different altitudes between 650 and 1050 metres situated along the slopes
of the Madonie mountains and have an autochtonous viticultural heritage, unique for its history and manifest
characteristics. Vineyards with an average age of 30-40 years, old alberello plantings combined with the more
recent espaliers, are an exclusive and inimitable example of valuing the land. The philosophy of environmental
sustainability along with natural and biological cultivation methods and the reintroduction of ancient local traditions
contribute to safeguard and enhance viticultural biodiversity at a territorial level along with the achievement
of excellent grape quality. Castelluccimiano has the rare ability to combine sustainable agriculture, experience
and wine-growing masterfully with the ability to envisage new stories capable of conveying, through the value of
mountain viticulture, a true link to the territory to which the company belongs.

Our estate specialises in the cultivation of the vine and the production of wines, a passion of our ancestors which
        goes back over 100 years.
We are located in Sicily in the Province of Agrigento, one of the areas which is highly suitable for the production
of grapes. In 1987, the Casà wine producers chose to follow the organic production route without the use of any
        synthetic chemical treatements.
In 2012, our white Beauceant wine was awarded a Gold Medal at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.

The history of our wine begins with a long geological event lasting 500,000 – 700,000 years which gave rise to the
Etnean region and to the highest volcano in Europe. This volcano has erupted enormous quantities of lava over the
        centuries.
Benanti’s vineyards currently lie in the Comunes of Castiglione di Sicilia, Milo, Trecastagni, Viagrande and Santa
Maria di Licodia and is a winery on Etna which offers DOC wine production with remarkable characteristics and a
        unique touch.
We discovered that the autochthonous vineyards of Etna (Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante)
produce wines which are very different from each other depending on the pedo-climatic conditions of each area
of production. The Etna DOC region has a semicircular shape which stretches from north to south-west in an area
ranging between 450 and 1,000m. asl.

Marco De Bartoli is considered one of Sicily’s winemaking pioneers for his long-standing commitment to the native
Sicilian white grape varieties, Grillo and Zibibbo. He produces them on two separate estates: the first in Marsala,
in Sicily’s south-west corner; the other on the small island of Pantelleria, south-east of Sicily. His belief in the value
of traditional methods of production of these grapes and their wines is complemented by his equally strong belief
in the future of Sicily as one of Europe’s most vital viticultural areas. Grillo, which historically forms the basis of
Marsala’s classic wines, has been grown on the island since Phoenician times. From his Samperi winery, in the
Contrada Samperi just west of Marsala, Marco De Bartoli produces several wines from this grape.
“Vecchio Samperi” was first made in 1980. Named for the territory that houses De Bartoli’s country estate, it is a
prestigious “Vergine” wine made using the traditional Solera method, in which small quantities of young wine are
added to wines of older vintages as they pass through a sequence of wooden barrels. The complex, harmonious
result celebrates the fruit of many harvests.

The Azienda was created in 2004 at the Contrada Fossa di Lupo in the heart of the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG
area. Our biggest issue was to understand the requirements of our land without disturbing or modifying it during its
development whilst seeking to embrace all that it could offer; a unique balance which gives strength and harmony in
the Nero d’Avola, freshness and elegance in the Frappato.
The Estate, cultivated organically, has 30 hectares of which 18 hectares are vineyard growing the red Nero d’Avola and
Frappato and the white Albanello and Moscato di Alessandra (all local Sicilian varieties). The rest of the estate is grows
        arable crops and olives.
Our particular climate, the hot sun, the fresh nights, the red sandy soil and an attentive agriculture are the natural
        essential elements of our production.

Azienda Agricola COS was founded in 1980 by Giambattista Cilia, Giusto Occhipinti and Cirino Strano. Three
friends who wanted to go over what had once been the work of their ancestors. The acronym of their surnames
(Cilia-Occhipinti-Strano) gives rise to the name of the company, still a partnership. The company follows the
principles of biodynamic viticulture to the vineyard to help find and keep balance in harmony with nature and the
wine to express the character of its soils.

Belice in the province of Palermo on hill-slopes which overlook the plains of Mandranova.
From these hills at 400m. asl. bathed in sunlight 35 ha. of vineyards spread out planted with both native and
        international varieties.
The keystone of the Alessandro di Camporeale company can be found in its precise and meticulous care of the
vines. Indeed, all these activities are performed manually in accordance with the rhythms of wine-production, and
aim at cultivating high-quality grapes from which to make high-quality wines.

Region: Eloro - Noto DOP

The Padova family has tended vines here for almost a century but only in 1993 did they begin bottling their own
wine. Shortly after Massimo Padova took over the estate from his father and now runs it along with his sister
Marianta, their cousin Antonella, and Massimo’s wife, Margherita. This energetic young team has worked tirelessly
over the last dozen years to build a new winery and hone production techniques, resulting in an impeccable
expression of the land.
Riofavara is located in the Noto Valley, just a few minutes down the road from the town that gave Nero d’Avola its
name, and was the first producer to dignify this grape with the use of its own indigenous yeasts. The philosophy at
Riofavara revolves around two central concepts: Sicilian typicity and the environment. The family has established
their own stringent standards that demand quality in the finished wine as well as environmentally friendly practices
during production.

        Region: Acate (Ragusa)

Valle dell’Acate is one of the most enterprising wine producers in Sicily, committed to continuing and enhancing the
centuries-old tradition of viticulture and wine-making in the renowned triangle of land formed by Acate, Comiso and
Vittoria in the province of Ragusa.
The winery was founded by Giuseppe Jacono, whose family has been farming, growing vines and producing wine since
the days when Vittoria was the main centre for exporting wine to France at the end of the 19th century.
Valle dell’Acate grows mainly autochthonous vines with special attention to Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Sicily’s first and only
DOCG, and to Frappato Vittoria DOC.
The estate covers an area of about 100 hectares. The golden yellow terrain has a particular calcareous sandstone
substrate interbedded with pockets of clay. At night, the soil doesn’t retain the heat that is absorbed during the hottest
days of the year which, combined with the latitude of Acate, explains the great difference in temperature between day
and night. These temperature ranges and the nature of the soil give the wines a unique quality and elegant, fresh notes
that embrace its rich floral aromas.

Abraxas is a small company born from a double passion: Pantelleria island and wine. The Abraxas’s founders and
manager has reached the wine’s fascination stimulated by an ardent history and cultural curiosity. The Moscatella
vine of Alessandria journeyed from the east until it reached Pantelleria. Zibibbo would appear to be an Arab name.
Like so many others who have fallen in love with the island, the owners of Abraxas have tried to make Passito wines,
with the words of Esiodo in mind, “When Orion and Syrius reach the middle of the sky and pink-fingered Aurora
looks on Arthur, then O Perse, pick all the grapes and carry them home; keep them in the sun for ten days and
nights, then in the shade for five days, then on the sixth day put the gifts of Dionysius into your jars and they will give
you joy.” (Esiodo: The Works and The Days)

Introduction The quality ofproduction in Sicily has taken leaps and bounds compared to some thirty years ago. Until the early 80’s Sicily was primarily producing vast quantities of bulk wine used for blending wines in the north of Italy and often shipped as far as France. The most significant changes in Sicily’s production took place in the mid-eighties thanks to a number of family estates including Planeta, Donnafugata and Tasca d’Almerita, who still today are among the benchmarks of Sicilian wines and place Sicily on the global map in terms of international acclaim and reliable quality production. Over the past 20 years IRVOS (Istituto Regionale Vini e Olii Sicilia - Sicily’s Regional Institute for Wine and Olive Oil) has contributed enormously to establishing vineyard management, research and clonal selection of its main indigenous varietals such as Nero d’Avola, Carricante, Nerello Mascalese, Catarratto and Inzolia, which today constitute the new image of Sicilian wines produced by a number of emerging quality wineries beginning to play a growing role in the international arena. The second important ‘Renaissance’ currently taking place with Sicilian wine is communicating this potential of quality to the rest of the world. We are targeting international markets, taking part in international shows, as well as organising events with importers and opinion leaders, in order to communicate the excellence of our wines and the uniqueness of our territory. Sicily today has 23 DOC areas of production and one DOCG, Cerasuolo di Vittoria. Sicily boasts a total of 112,725 ha. of vineyard, of which 71,967 ha, (63.8%) hectares are planted to white varietals and 40,508 hectares (35.9%) are planted to red varietals. The standard bearers by far of Sicilian wine in terms of plantings and popularity is the red varietal Nero d’Avola and the indigenous white variety Catarratto. Nero d’Avola does well in most of Sicily’s appellation areas, because it is a terroir wine, changing its character, depending on where it is planted. If you are looking to produce a modern style of wine, characterized by a rounded, fruity appeal and easy drinking, then Menfi and Sambuca in western Sicily are the best areas to plant Nero d’Avola, whereas if you are looking for a more complex Cru showing elegance, aromas and acidity with good ageing potential, then the area of Noto, Vittoria and Ragusa in the southeast are excellent areas. Contea di Sclafani in the centre of Sicily is another area with excellent potential, yielding age-worthy structured wines with bold fruit. The most recent trend-setter in Sicily can be found on the unique volcanic slopes of Etna. Its terraced vineyards of ancient bush-trained vines produce wines of depth and finesse characterised by minerality and elegance, similar to Burgundy wines. Top bottlings of Etna Rosso DOC are made from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio while Etna Bianco DOC is made predominantly with Carricante grapes. These wines have gained a lot of attention on account of their unique quality and subtle aromatic profile. Indigenous White Sicilian Grape Varieties Albanello Albanello is one of the historic vines grown in the Syracuse district where it has gradually dwindled to a few specimens, whilst some random stocks can still be found in the Ragusa vineyards. It is usually vinified together with other grapes. The wine is particularly delicate, with a deep straw-yellow colour, a rich suite of aromas and a well-structured taste. Syracuse district. Ansonica or Inzolia It is one of the longest grown grapes in Sicily. Mentioned by Pliny by the name of “Irziola”, popularly known as “Inzolia-vranca” to distinguish it from “Inzolia-nigra” and is also described by Cupani (1696) and Sestini (1760). Widely spread over the whole island, it competes with other white wines and is frequently blended with Catarratto. Locally it is also consumed as a table grape. A delicate wine when made as a single varietal with a greenish straw-yellow colour, scents characteristic of the grape, neutral to the taste, quite full-bodied, good percentage of alcohol, balanced acidity and smoothness. All of Sicily, except the province of Enna. Carricante Historical vine from the Etna area where it has been cultivated since time immemorial. Described by Sestini (1760) in his memoirs about Mascali wines, its name is due to the high production it is able to give. Particularly fine wine, straw-yellow colour with green tinges, good aromatic structure with sweet and floral aroma of herbs. It has a good taste structure, warm, full-bodied, characterised by a high level of fixed acids which makes it particularly adaptable for wood aging and conservation. Province of Catania. Catarratto Bianco commune Historical Sicilian vine which has been cultivated since time immemorial. It was popularly called “Catarratu vrancu”, described by Cupani (1696) and Sestini (1760). Pastena (1970) cites foru catarratis cultivated in Sicily. Found all over the Island, its cultivation is particularly wide in the provinces of Trapani and Palermo. Catarratto forms part of the composition of many white Sicilian wines. The wine is straw-yellow coloured with a tendency to gold with a good aromatic profile with fruity smells and floral notes, its taste is characterized by a strong presence of alcohol and a good structure, neutral in flavour, quite acidic and with a tendency to a smooth taste. All of Sicily except the province of Enna. Damaschino Quoted by Mendola (1885), it is supposed to have arrived in Sicily during the Arabic domination, especially in the Trapani area. It was used mostly for replanting vineyards in the Marsalese area after the phylloxera invasion. Its cultivation is restricted to the provinces of Trapani and Agrigento. It is usually used to blend with other grapes. The wine is fine, early drinking, straw yellow, with a delicate and pleasant bouquet, neutral flavour, quite harmonic. Not capable of much ageing. Province of Agrigento and Trapani. Grecanico Dorato The origin of these grapes, cultivated for centuries in Sicily, is unknown. It is perhaps the same grape that Cupani (1696) described as Sicilian grapes called “Grecani”. Historically, it is widespread in the provinces of Trapani and Agrigento. Scattered plants can be found in many Sicilian vineyards. Fine wine with a golden yellow colour, quite alcoholic, with a neutral scent and taste, fresh and harmonious. Provinces of Agrigento, Trapani and Palermo. vi

Malvasia di Lipari Itbelongs to the large group of ‘Malvasie’ cultivated in Italy. Presumably introduced by the Greek colonizers in the 4th century BC, it is mentioned in the works of numerous Roman authors. Cupani (1696) describes it with the name “Malvagia”, from the vulgar “Marvascia”. Notwithstanding the name, the Malvasia of Lipari is cultivated above all on the island Salina and to a much lesser degree on the other Aeolian islands; it is present also in a few vineyards in the Messina and Catania territories. Traditionally vinified to produce the famous DOC Malvasia delle Lipari passito (sweet) wine. The grapes are picked at the advanced stage of ripening; before being vinified they are laid out to dry on racks. The wine is aromatic, with intense herbaceous and floral scents, notes of honey and dried apricots; the taste is sweet, warm and aromatic with balanced acidity and taste. Province of Messina. Minnella Bianca Described by Sestini (1760), it has been cultivated for centuries exclusively in the Etna territory, where vines are still present amongst Nerello Mascalese and Carricante vineyards. Its name derives from “Minna” (breast) such is the shape of the grapes. In the past the grapes were used to give more softness to the Etna-area wines, which were typically rich in acidity and tannins. Generally if forms part of the blend of the local wines of the Etna area. Vinified as a single varietal, it is a wine of a straw yellow colour with a select range of aromas and a tendency towards a soft taste and little crispness. Provincia di Catania. Moscato Bianco Belongs to the ‘Moscati’ group, dubbed by the ancients “Vitis Apianae” due to their sweetness and to the fact that it attracted honey bees. Cupani (1657-1710) refers to a “Muscateddu Vrancu” as a synonym of the Vitis Apinae cited by Pliny. It has been cultivated in the province of Syracuse since ancient times. It is thought to be linked to the ancient “Vinum Balintium” produced with “Moscadello dolce” grapes and praised by Pliny, Fazello and other Roman historians. It is vinified to produce the Moscato di Siracusa and the Moscato di Noto. When vinified naturally a lovely light golden wine is produced and a pleasant Moscato aroma is obtained. Provinces of Siracusa and Ragusa. Moscato d’Alessandria or Zibibbo Belongs to the ‘Moscati’ group, dubbed by the ancients “Vitis Apianae” due to their sweetness and to the fact that it attracted honey bees. Cultivated in Sicily presumably since Phoenician times, this variety was used especially as a table grape, both fresh and dried; its name originates from the Arabic “Zibibbo”, still used in Sicily today to indicate preserved dried grapes. Traditionally vinified to produce aromatic white wines, amongst which the important wines DOC Moscato and Moscato Passito di Pantelleria. The latter is of an intense yellow colour, presenting inebriating scents of apricots, flowers, honey, when tasted it is sweet, full-bodied, warm and sapid, with a balanced acidity and smoothness, pleasurably harmonic. It is used to produce dry aromatic wines. Province of Trapani. Red Alicante or Grénache Also known as “Granaccio”, it was probably brought to Sicily by both the French and the British in the 18th century. It is grown in both the Catania and Messina districts. In the Etna vineyards it is still possible to find old ungrafted plants. Purple-red colour, with grapey and fruity hints, a delicate taste, less full-bodied yet balanced and well-shaped; ideal for early consumption. Catania and Messina districts. vii

Corinto Nero Native ofGreece, it grows in many vineyard areas in Europe, especially Greece and Turkey. In Sicily it is grown on the Aeolian Islands, mainly on the island of Salina. Gallus (1595) refers to it as “dark sea grapes”, while Molon (1906) describes it as dark Passerina. Cupani (1696), in his Hortus Catholicus and Phanphyton Siculum distinguishes three varieties of Corinto, commonly known as Tuccarino, Tuccarineddu or Niuridduzzo and “Tuccarino cù cocci”. Cupani himself mentions sun-dried Corinto grapes, referring to them as “Passulina del nostro Regno” (Raisins of our Reign). Its grapes, usually sun-dried on trellises, account for 5-8% of the composition of the DOC wine Malvasia delle Lipari. Made as single grape varietal, it produces a pale ruby red wine, with intense, slightly spiced perfume, moderately full-bodied, generally soft. Province of Messina. Frappato In his memoirs about the Vittoria wines, Sestini describes it as a wine of uncertain origin. It is still cultivated in Vittoria and is common in the area of Ragusa and Siracusa, generally in association with Nero d’Avola. It is not widespread in the other Sicilian provinces. The grapes, when produced as a single varietal, make excellent wine with a ruby red colour, not too intense and bright, strong wine aromas, fruity and flowery, full-bodied on average, balanced tannin, fresh and soft taste, very harmonious. Provinces of Ragusa, Siracusa and Catania. Nerello Cappuccio Its name indicates the habit of the foliage hides the bunches like a cape. It is a very ancient vine cultivated with other vines mainly in the provinces of Catania and Messina. It is a fine, ruby-coloured wine, with a winey, fruity aroma, good taste structure; it is ideal for a wine for immediate consumption. When vinified with Nerello mascalese it produces long-lasting wines; it is also used to produce DOC Etna Rosso and Etna rosato. Provinces of Catania, Messina, Agrigento and Enna. Nerello Mascalese It belongs to the historical group of the “Nigrelli” vines described by Sestini (1760) in his memoirs on wines from the county of Mascali. Traditionally grown as a small bush, it is the most diffused vine in the Mount Etna area where it has been cultivated since time immemorial. It presumably has ties with the ancient wines of Etna celebrated by Homer and Roman historians. The wine is elegant and of a great character, with a tendency to be tannic, it is ruby red in colour with granite hues; the excellent structure and the good aromatic structure make it suitable for ageing. Provinces of Catania, Messina, Agrigento and Enna. Nero d’Avola Mentioned by Cupani (1696), but it is still uncertain when it dates back to. It is linked to the ancient wines that went by the names of “Calabresi di Augusta” and “Vini di Vittoria”. The name Calabrese derives presumably from the two old Sicilian words “Calea”-“Aulisi”, or grape of Avola, referring to the place where it was originally picked. It is the king of Sicilian grapes, grown in all areas of the island, where it finds the best place to express its qualities. The wines distinguish themselves from one another depending on the cultivation area of the vine. They have rich personalities, of intense ruby red colour, an excellent array of aromas with fruity, floral and spicy notes, very well-structured taste, tannic, full-bodied, balanced acidity and smoothness, and overall very harmonic. All of Sicily. Nocera A very similar vine to the Nerelli varieties. It has traditionally been grown in the area of Messina since ancient times. It is believed to be linked to the historic “Mamertinum” wines and the “Zancle” wines which were praised by ancient Romans. Real traces of ancient history can be found in the vineyards of the province of Messina. Plants are also present sparsely in the vineyards of the provinces of Catania, Syracuse and Ragusa. The wine obtained from single grape is of a strong ruby red colour with purple touches, a good suite of aromas, full-bodied, rich in fixed acid, alcohol and tannins. Provinces of Messina, Catania and Siracusa. Perricone This grape is typical of Western Sicily where growing has taken place since time immemorial. It is cultivated in limited quantities in the provinces of Palermo and Trapani; it is also found in the provinces of Agrigento and Messina. Wine made with single grape giving a quite intense ruby red colour, typical wine-like fragrance, quite full-bodied, moderately tannic, overall well- balanced, ready to consume. Provinces of Agrigento, Palermo and Trapani. viii

Acquired by Illva Saronno Holding and brought together in a single group, the two historic companies now constitute the leading privately- owned wine producing group in Sicily and their estates and cellars provide a key chapter in the history of Sicily. The story of the company’s estates began with the selection of the specific areas of land: Suor Marchesa in Riesi, Risignolo in Salemi and Vajasindi on the slopes of Mount Etna. The experimental innovations, closely bound to the lands of Sicily, have led to what to can only be described as iconic wines such as Duca Enrico, the first fully Nero d’Avola wine, while others provide new and interesting enological challenges like Nawàri, the first Pinot Nero wine from Mount Etna. Each Duca di Salaparuta wine is, in essence, the expression of specific local areas and of a long wine-making tradition. 1. Passo delle Mule 2010, Sicilia IGP 3. Frenchman, Hugues Bernard de la Gatinais, married Gigi Guarrasi, heiress to a prominent Palermo family in 1968. They engaged in a passionate adventure, the reconstruction of the family cellar destroyed earlier by the Belice valley earthquake. French varietals were planted alongside autochthonous ones and today, their son Laurent continues the work his parents started with the same care and passion. The company’s aim is passionately devoted to the growing of local varieties – most precisely Nero d’Avola and the Moscato di Noto. Since 1997, all of the company’s produce is made to a system of controlled and certified organic agriculture. Domination of this area has been numerous: variously by Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Aragonese and Bourbons. All of whom, in the course of centuries, have fought over this fertile soil exposed to the sun with a mild winter climate and set in a propitious geographical position at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa in the centre of the Mediterranean. Towards the end of the 16th century the family moved to Spaccaforno where ancient documents prove their status of landowners. The Curtos are viticulturists since 1670 and they still own 200 hectares of which 30 ha. are planted with vineyards. Towards the end of the 20th century, the estate began to focus on wine making seriously. They turned the 50 year old “alberello “vineyard into a key plantation, planted new vineyards and created a new vinification cellar equipped with the most modern wine-making technologies. The cellar is located in the beautiful setting of Villa Sulla (18th century) near Ispica, in a spectacular position among vineyards, citrus groves, olive groves, carob groves and enclosed by the characteristic dry walls of the Modica area and by numerous necropoli. The soil of the estate has a very calcareous nature and it is all part of the Eloro D.O.C. area, near Pachino, not far from Avola, the original town of the “Nero d’Avola” grape variety. This is the most luminous and the hottest area of Italy which also enjoys the benefit of the Mediterranean sea breeze. He produces them on two separate estates: the first in Marsala, in Sicily’s south-west corner; the other on the small island of Pantelleria, south-east of Sicily. His belief in the value of traditional methods of production of these grapes and their wines is complemented by his equally strong belief in the future of Sicily as one of Europe’s most vital viticultural areas. Grillo, which historically forms the basis of Marsala’s classic wines, has been grown on the island since Phoenician times. From his Samperi winery, in the Contrada Samperi just west of Marsala, Marco De Bartoli produces several wines from this grape. “Vecchio Samperi” was first made in 1980. Named for the territory that houses De Bartoli’s country estate, it is a prestigious “Vergine” wine made using the traditional Solera method, in which small quantities of young wine are added to wines of older vintages as they pass through a sequence of wooden barrels. The complex, harmonious result celebrates the fruit of many harvests. 1. Vecchio Samperi Ventennale, Sicilia IGT 2. Shortly after Massimo Padova took over the estate from his father and now runs it along with his sister Marianta, their cousin Antonella, and Massimo’s wife, Margherita. This energetic young team has worked tirelessly over the last dozen years to build a new winery and hone production techniques, resulting in an impeccable expression of the land. Riofavara is located in the Noto Valley, just a few minutes down the road from the town that gave Nero d’Avola its name, and was the first producer to dignify this grape with the use of its own indigenous yeasts. The philosophy at Riofavara revolves around two central concepts: Sicilian typicity and the environment. The winery was founded by Giuseppe Jacono, whose family has been farming, growing vines and producing wine since the days when Vittoria was the main centre for exporting wine to France at the end of the 19th century. Valle dell’Acate grows mainly autochthonous vines with special attention to Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Sicily’s first and only DOCG, and to Frappato Vittoria DOC. The estate covers an area of about 100 hectares. The golden yellow terrain has a particular calcareous sandstone substrate interbedded with pockets of clay. At night, the soil doesn’t retain the heat that is absorbed during the hottest days of the year which, combined with the latitude of Acate, explains the great difference in temperature between day and night. These temperature ranges and the nature of the soil give the wines a unique quality and elegant, fresh notes that embrace its rich floral aromas. 1. Il Moro - Nero d’Avola 2009, IGT Sicilia Rosso 3.
