The document discusses the upcoming end of support for Windows Server 2003 and Windows Small Business Server 2003 on July 14, 2015. After this date, servers running these operating systems will no longer receive security updates or technical support from Microsoft, leaving them vulnerable to security issues. The document urges businesses to plan their migration to a modern server operating system like Windows Server 2012 to ensure security and compliance. It provides steps for businesses to assess their existing Windows Server 2003 environment and develop a migration timetable to transition servers before support ends.

End of support means:
No updates
37 critical updates were released in 2013 for Windows Server 2003/R2 under Extended Support. No updates will be developed or released after end of support.
No compliance
Lack of compliance with various standards and regulations can be devastating. This may include various regulatory and industry standards for which compliance can no longer be achieved. For example, lack of compliance with the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standards might mean companies such as Visa and MasterCard will no longer do business with you. Or, the new cost of doing business will include paying catastrophic penalties and astronomically high transaction fees.
No safe haven
Both virtualized and physical instances of Windows Server 2003 are vulnerable and would not pass a compliance audit. Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 servers are also affected.
Staying put will cost more in the end. Maintenance costs for aging hardware will also increase. Added costs will be incurred for intrusion detection systems, more advanced firewalls, network segmentation, and so on—simply to isolate Windows Server 2003 servers.
Many applications will also cease to be supported, once the operating system they are running on is unsupported. This includes all Microsoft applications.
Now is the time to act
You must start planning migration now.
Servers may still be running Windows Server 2003/R2 for a number of reasons. You can use these reasons as a discussion point:
Perceived challenges of upgrading applications
Presence of custom and legacy applications
Budget and resource constraints

Gone are the days where organizations thought a server as a big thing or bulky machines that can only be installed in data centers
As a company we always tasked to find out which one is better i.e. either virtual server or traditional set-up.
A virtual server is a server which shares software and hardware resources with other operating system.
Most organizations are touting server virtualization as the greatest thing an organization can invest. In the past we needed server virtualization to perform every function such as e-mailing, enterprise planning, and e-mail.
Server virtualization have allowed IT departments in various organizations to consolidate multiple servers onto one machine. Kumar, CIO at New York Institute of Technology has indicated that virtual server offers efficiencies when running multiple servers.

Virtual server vs. traditional set-up
Virtual server offers a lot of benefits as compared to traditional set-up these benefits are:
Scalability
Minimal downtime
Security
Simplified management
Disaster recovery
Efficient use of resources (Armstrong, 2007)
Scalability: Rather than Cybixx buying a new hardware every time it is needed they need a new server, with a virtual sever, they will be able to spin up a new server in far less time
Minimal downtime: If Cybixx have to work on host servers they can simply move their virtual server to a new host
Security: In virtual server security is usually centralized through the hypervisor software
Simplified management: With virtual server, Cybixx will be able to log into one of their servers and manage all their servers in that environment
Disaster and recovery: With a virtual server Cybixx will find it easier and faster to restore a failed server
Efficient use of resources: Traditional set-up which is also widely known as physical servers run at the capacity of 25 percent that means it leaves plently of leftover processing power and memory but with virtual server only one sever will be hosting multiple virtual servers
3
Conclusion
Cybixx need to invest in virtual server as it offers enormous benefits. The only challenges with virtual servers are:
Upfront cost
Require experienced IT personnel
Proper planning (Herington, 2006)
Upfront cost: To set-up Virtual server environment Cybixx need to invest with about $1000. Additionally, the organization need to invest in at least a SAN and two robust hosts

Editor's Notes
Hi, my name is El Conroy and I am a Microsoft Partner with FAJ SYSTEMS LLC. As you may know, Microsoft will end support for Windows Server 2003 and Windows Small Business Server 2003 on July 14, 2015. My goal is to advise you of the impact of this milestone on your current server environment and to help you take the necessary steps now to minimize disruption and keep your business moving forward.
As you know, the goal of any business is to grow. Businesses that earn more revenue often hire more people. All of this leads to increased wealth for business owners and their employees and contributes to a healthier, more vibrant economy.
According to a 2013 Boston Consulting Group study of 4000 international small and mid-size business decision makers, there are dramatic differences between tech-savvy companies that take advantage of the cloud and other modern technologies, compared to those who do not.
The study showed that tech-savvy companies grew revenue 15% faster than those who were not leveraging as much technology. In addition, these tech-savvy companies created new jobs nearly twice as fast as their less savvy counterparts.
Interestingly, this growth was consistent regardless of country (developed or emerging), industry, or whether the business was run by a man or a woman. For example, in emerging markets, small and mid-size tech leaders grew just as quickly as their peers in developed countries – sometimes faster.
Moreover, a key finding of the study revealed Microsoft to be the technology provider of choice for tech-savvy small and midsize businesses. Almost 60% of tech-savvy companies rated Microsoft as their “partner when it comes to preparing your company for new and changing technology.”
So, what does this mean for Windows Server 2003 end of support? Simply put, there has never been a better time to modernize your infrastructure on new servers running Windows Server 2012 R2. In doing so, you can realize the increased revenue and job growth already enjoyed by tech-savvy small and mid-size companies around the world. And you’ll be in a perfect position to take your first steps toward the cloud.
But the clock is ticking. Support for Windows Server 2003 and Windows Small Business Server 2003 will end on July 14th, 2015. This rapidly approaching milestone opens a window of opportunity to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2 now. Delaying these migrations will present significant risks and complications that will only increase as the date approaches.
There are a number of reasons why customers should not wait to begin their migration from Windows Server 2003 or Windows Small Business Server 2003.
No updates
37 critical updates were released in 2013 for Windows Server 2003/R2 under Extended Support. No updates will be developed or released after end of support, leaving these systems vulnerable to software and security issues.
No compliance
Lack of compliance with various standards and regulations can be devastating. This may include various regulatory and industry standards for which compliance can no longer be achieved.
Organizations that need to maintain PCI compliance are aware that unsupported software could mean inability to validate compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).
All major credit card companies require their merchants and service providers who store, process or transmit cardholder data to comply with PCI DSS. Merchants and providers who process over 6 million Visa transactions a year (and are therefore Level 1 merchants) must undergo an onsite PCI assessment.
No protection
Both virtualized and physical instances of Windows Server 2003 are vulnerable and would not pass a compliance audit. Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 servers are also affected.
Resellers must help customers start planning their migrations now.
The technology in Windows Server 2003 is over ten years old, a lifetime by server standards. Conversely, the feature set and benefits of a modern server solution running Windows Server 2012 R2 combines the best of today’s hardware and software capabilities.
A modern server running Windows Server 2012 R2 features:
Latest technology for new business scenarios
Comprehensive virtualization capabilities to consolidate servers and reduce consumed resources.
Cost-effective storage using Storage Spaces on commodity hardware.
Disaster Recovery, with replication intervals as little as 30 seconds
Access applications remotely while data is kept on the server.
Built in cloud backup with Microsoft Azure
Full support for business continuity
Manage costs with active Warranties and availability of parts and services
Improved protection from security threats with latest updates
More powerful servers for faster and more reliable access to information
Improved processing and throughput of the server hardware
2x the performance enhancements that help to make the process of live migration (virtual machines) faster, more streamlined, and more efficient
Reduced server footprint for increased efficiency and cost savings
Virtualize on modern hardware for 5x improvements in virtualization host support and 4x improvements in physical memory to optimize available server capacity
Simplified management.
Standards-based management across compute, storage and networking resources.
Automation to eliminate manual tasks.
6. Preinstalled for simplicity
Ease of deployment, installation, and set up
Convenient and cost effective
OEM Support
Here are some examples of small and mid-size customers that have benefitted from replacing their aging infrastructure with modern servers running Windows Server 2012 R2.
For EmpireCLS Worldwide Chauffeured Services, technology has always been a competitive differentiator. But when it decided to license its dispatch and reservation systems software to other companies, it suddenly became a hosting provider and needed more sophisticated data center capabilities and lower IT costs. EmpireCLS decided to upgrade its servers to the Windows Server 2012 operating system to take advantage of improvements in networking, availability, remote access, and other areas.
With these new features, EmpireCLS can provision hosting customers faster, deliver high availability at lower costs, and continue to reduce operating costs while growing the business. In fact, EmpireCLS has reduced IT costs by 30 percent during a period when the business grew 30 percent. With a more efficient virtual desktop environment, EmpireCLS has improved compute performance by 300 percent.

OTRUM provides interactive television solutions and content to the hospitality industry, including large hotel chains. Many of OTRUM’s physical servers were aging and needed replacement. To spend less on purchasing and maintaining physical servers and to reduce the cost of power and cooling at its two data centers, OTRUM wanted to expand virtualization technology in its server environment.
The company thought it needed VMware to virtualize. But Working with Microsoft Gold Certified Partner OfficeTeam, OTRUM learned that virtualization software was included in its licenses for Windows Server. With Hyper-V virtualization technology built-in to Windows Server 2012, OTRUM could efficiently deploy, scale, and manage a virtualized server infrastructure. By running several virtual servers on one physical machine, OTRUM reduced the size of its physical infrastructure by 50 percent, saving 65 percent on hardware and maintenance costs.
