William Lloyd Garrison was an American abolitionist, journalist, and social reformer. He founded and edited the abolitionist newspaper The Liberator in 1831, which called for the immediate emancipation of all slaves in the United States. Garrison was a leading figure in the abolitionist movement in America and advocated for the rights of African Americans until his death in 1879.
