This document outlines a research plan to design adaptive spaces that can be configured and reconfigured for different tasks in small living spaces. The research will involve primary research through cultural probes, questionnaires, photographs and first-hand observation of peoples' homes to understand user needs, habits and problems. Additional research will include speaking with experts, exploring ergonomics, accessibility, health and safety issues, relevant technologies and materials, and manufacturing and costs. The goal is to design multifunctional, modular furniture and components that can expand, contract and adapt spaces for different tasks in an original, efficient way.

NewMR Event: Qualitative Research in 2021
Presentation Description
Over my long career, I have been lucky enough to work with really creative researchers who have taught me to be fearless and creative. On a project for a US based restaurant chain, I worked with my videographer to record interviews without the knowledge of those around us, focused on the research participants who are in the know, and my own brand of sneaky ethnography was born. After Covid, I’ll take this approach back out on the road to explore all sorts of restaurants, hotels, retail establishment, auto dealerships and so much more. If you can go do it, I can study it! And have fun too.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Let's dive deeper into the world of ODC! Ricardo Alves (OutSystems) will join us to tell all about the new Data Fabric. After that, Sezen de Bruijn (OutSystems) will get into the details on how to best design a sturdy architecture within ODC.
1. Recap Compact Living: living in a small space - looking at the upper end of the market. Dedicated spaces: Spaces dedicated to a task. Combinations of products: combining products which go together.
3. Adaptive spaces What is it? Adapting your space to force or encourage you to be organized, efficient or convenient. Improving problems with tasks in the home.
4. What it could include: Multifunctional Modular Expanding Contracting Mechanisms Components to fit any space
5. How I shall research! Primary research into peoples lifestyles - Homes, Habits, Tasks and Problems. Cultural probes: With questionnaires and photographs etc get people interested in the project and involved User needs and wants I could also use this research to determine the market I want to aim at.
6. First hand observation and photographs of peoples homes Look at how people react and change their environment. Research into areas outside the home that work and don’t - e.g. Factory lines Speak to experts in furniture making/design, manufacturing, interior design.
8. I need to think of an original method of researching to involve as many people as possible and to get as much relevant information as I can.
9. How I could get people to photograph certain areas in their homes. Find tasks that people like and hate. Perhaps observe first hand some home tasks Market Research: Get people to chose between styles of existing products to try and determine taste.
