This study examined how the type of evidence used to support advice influences the immediate reaction of the advisee. The researchers hypothesized that advisee-focused evidence would be associated with more positive reactions from advisees, while advisor-focused evidence would produce more negative reactions. Pairs of college students discussed a problem and responses were coded. It was found that advisee-focused evidence led to more elaboration by the advisee, while advisor-focused evidence resulted in less elaboration. The type of evidence used affected the discussants' immediate responses.
