When light passes from one medium to another at an angle, it bends due to the change in speed. The amount of bending, or refraction, depends on the optical density of the materials, with less dense materials like air bending light less than denser materials like water, glass, and diamond. Common examples of refraction include objects like spoons appearing bent when in water, fish appearing higher than their actual position, and the sun appearing to rise and set later than it actually does.
