Taiji Fujisaki from the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies presented on why local communities should engage with national forest monitoring systems. IGES has conducted action research on community-based forest monitoring projects that have the potential to benefit local communities. These community-based monitoring systems can also link to sub-national forest monitoring systems by reporting data on timber production, tree planting, and rehabilitation activities to village and district governments. IGES resources for community-based forest monitoring include a manual on community carbon accounting and an action research report.
