Sheep's wool does not felt when wet because it has natural lubrication and water repellent properties. The scales on wool fibers are anchored down in a way that prevents them from interlocking and felting when wet. Research has shown that the composition of sheep sebum, which coats the wool, provides lubrication and water resistance that keeps the fibers from clinging together in a matted way when they get wet.
