Green Infrastructure Solutions for Complete
Stormwater Management
Complete Stormwater Management
The goal of stormwater management is to maintain the natural hydrologic cycle,
prevent flooding, minimize undesirable stream erosion and protect water quality. The
most common means of achieving these goals is to reduce the amount of stormwater
runoff. This is accomplished by reducing the volume of water, slowing its flow and
detaining pollutants. Green infrastructure solutions that maintain or restore the natural
hydrologic process are the primary methods used to accomplish this goal.
Traditional stormwater management models rely on the draining of urban runoff as
quickly as possible, through channels and pipes. However, this type of solution merely
transfers flood problems from one area to another. In addition, it causes a significant
increase in peak flow rates and the cost of stormwater management. These costs can
be mitigated by utilizing on-site detention, including infiltration trenches, pervious
surfaces and detention ponds.
Infiltration is the ability of soil to absorb rainfall and snowmelt, which enables water to
soak into the ground. The natural soaking of stormwater helps to reduce flooding and
erosion issues, protect water quality, resupply the soil with moisture, reduce stream
turbidity and promote groundwater recharge. Infiltration is an essential part of any
sustainable and regenerative landscape.
While rain is falling, it collects pollutants from the surrounding environment, such as
fertilizers and pesticides, and can carry them to nearby streams and lakes. These
pollutants can pollute drinking water, cause ecological damage and harm human
health. Often, these chemicals can be carried by stormwater to areas that are not
impacted by human activity and enter the aquatic food chain.
As a result, the phosphorus content in these water bodies can become extremely high,
creating unhealthy conditions for fish and other animals that consume them. Often, the
only way to reduce the levels of phosphorus is by detaining the water in an
impoundment and filtering it.
Phosphorus control is a critical element of any comprehensive sustainability plan, as it
can have a profound impact on the environmental and economic health of our region.
To help communities achieve this goal, we have developed an innovative, low-cost and
simple to implement stormwater management system. The system utilizes a concrete
tank with a unique baffle wall and trash rack, which ensures that all settled materials
and floatable debris is separated from the filtration media.
Our team can design an array of green infrastructure techniques for your site, including
infiltration trenches and permeable pavers, to provide stormwater
management solutions for any budget. Our experience with the complex permitting
process also saves our clients time and money, both during construction and during
ongoing maintenance.
In addition, our staff works closely with the Albany County Stormwater Coalition, a self -
governing group of 13 municipal entities regulated as MS4s, to ensure efficient,
consistent and cost-effective compliance with MS4 stormwater regulations. To learn
more about the Coalition, click here.
Erosion Control in St Louis Missouri
Erosion is a natural occurrence that can damage landscapes and structures. It can also
be a safety hazard, especially in slopes or downhill areas. It occurs as a result of
natural factors, such as extraordinary rainfall or the lack of vegetation to hold soil in
place. Erosion control is an important part of landscape design and must be taken into
consideration during the planning process.
Whether you are landscaping a new lawn or building a commercial property, it is
necessary to plan for erosion control. Contractors who specialize in erosion control can
help you choose the best products and materials to prevent erosion and maintain a
healthy lawn. They will consider factors such as soil type, slope angle and average
rainfall to provide you with the best solution.
There are many different types of erosion control methods, but most fall into two
categories. Plants and hardscapes are commonly used to treat erosion problems, but
there are many other solutions as well. These include terracing, water diversion,
retaining walls and grid systems. A landscape architect will know the best options for
your property based on local conditions, such as soil type and slope angles.
Land disturbances that disturb more than one acre require the submittal of an erosion
and sediment control plan and approval from the Department of Environmental Quality.
Once an erosion and sediment control plan is approved, all construction activities must
be performed in accordance with the approved plan.
The purpose of the erosion and sediment control program is to protect the quality of
State waters by minimizing suspended sediment (soil particles carried by runoff)
generated from construction activities and discharging it into lakes, streams and rivers.
The program is administered by the Department of Environmental Quality through local
county offices and the City of Maryland Heights.
Soil erosion is a serious problem in St. Louis Missouri and the surrounding area. It can
cause landslides, flooding and other problems that are harmful to the environment. It is
essential to have proper erosion control techniques in order to protect the environment
and public health.
A number of people who have a lot of land often turn to erosion control companies for
assistance. These companies can offer services such as silt fencing, seeding, straw
baling, staked straw logs and mulch blowing. Choosing the right company to assist you
will ensure that your erosion problems are dealt with quickly and properly.
Storm water runoff is often the source of erosion, as it can carry soil and other debris
from disturbed areas. Erosion can be a problem for businesses and homes, as it can
lead to flooding and property damage. This is why it is important to have good drainage
systems in your home or business. This will prevent standing water from causing
erosion and flooding issues.
A drainage system can be a great investment for your home or business, as it will
prevent erosion and standing water from damaging your property. In addition, it can
improve the appearance of your property and increase its value.
Stormwater Basins
A stormwater basin is a vegetated depression designed to store and collect runoff
as a permanent pool of water that removes pollutants through settling and
biological uptake. Basins are used on sites where it is impractical or impossible to
divert stormwater flow to downstream natural or open waters.
The basins are constructed to prevent large volumes of stormwater from rushing
into nearby streams during rain and snowmelt events by holding the water until it
can be slowly released into stream, soils and groundwater. Basins can be found in
urban, suburban and rural settings and resemble ponds or bowl-shaped areas
planted with grass.
Some basins hold water at all times, resembling ponds; others drain completely.
Both types of basins are useful in reducing flooding and erosion problems
associated with development on impermeable surfaces such as roads, parking lots,
buildings and rooftops. In addition to preventing flood problems, basins can
improve water quality by removing sediment and other pollutants from stormwater
before it flows into nearby streams and rivers.
Sediment-laden stormwater is typically channeled to a stormwater basin through
street and parking lot drainage systems, swales and drain channels, and/or pipe
systems. Once the basins are full, they may discharge to downstream waters via a
weir structure or be directed to an adjacent detention or infiltration basin that will
operate much like a dry detention pond.
During the construction of this basin, a weir and skimmer were installed at the
inflow and outflow to monitor water quality during rainfall events. The turbidity data
collected at the outflow weir for the 16 November 2011 and 5 December 2011
rainfall events indicated that the basin performed well by capturing suspended
sediments with little impact on turbidity at the basin outflow. This was due to the
fact that most of the coarse sand in the basin had already settled out of suspension
during the previous rainfall event (which diluted the sediment-laden stormwater)
and the incorrect PAM was used by the contractor on the construction day for the 5
December 2011 rain event (which increased the amount of dissolved TSS in the
outflow).
Using the correct PAM is important in achieving high removal efficiencies for TSS,
phosphorus and nitrogen for both wet and dry detention ponds and sediment
basins. It is critical that the contractor use a formulation with appropriate particle
size distribution, which is usually based on sieve analysis of the raw soil. It is als o
critical that the contractor dose the correct amount of flocculating agent for each
rainfall event. Otherwise, the effectiveness of the sediment basin to remove TSS,
phosphorus and nitrogen will not be achieved. A failure to do so could result in
excessive algal blooms that kill the plants, harm wildlife and decrease overall
aesthetics. In addition, the nutrient concentrations in the basin outflow may
increase over time and require regular flushing to maintain optimal performance.
For further information on this subject, check out our blog post on the importance of
doing the right thing when it comes to PAM dosing in sediment basins.
Drainage St. Louis Missouri
Drainage St. Louis Missouri
The drainage system of your property is an essential part of a well-designed
landscape. A proper drainage system will protect your home, yard, and landscaping
from excessive moisture, soil erosion, mosquito breeding, and other problems caused
by too much water. At Big Bend Landscaping, we provide a wide variety of drainage
solutions to fit your individual needs.
Downspout Piping Drain Grates
Downspouts are not only an important part of the water drainage system of your home;
they also make it possible to collect rain and run-off water for reuse in irrigating plants,
washing cars, or other outdoor activities. Downspouts are usually installed in the eaves
of your home to collect and carry stormwater away from the foundation of your house,
keeping it from entering your basement or other areas of your home.
French Drains
A French drain is a popular drainage solution for lawns and other landscaped areas of
your home. When constructed properly a French drain will elim inate areas of standing
water which can be an ideal breading ground for mosquitoes.
Generally, the term “French drain” refers to a perforated (holes drilled into the pipe for
water to drain) PVC drain pipe that is wrapped in a drain cloth. The drain cloth helps
keep debris such as leaves and grass from clogging the pipe. A trench is dug into the
problem area and then the pipe is placed in the trench. The trench is filled with clean
rock and then top soil is placed over the drain pipe. This allows for normal lawn growth
while keeping the area dry.
French drains work because the dirt in the trench is permeable allowing for water to
pass through it easily and to the pipe. The water then flows to a d ischarge point such
as a gutter downspout, sump pump, or other suitable location. In addition to helping
prevent standing water in your yard, French drains help reduce the amount of sediment
that ends up in area streams, rivers and lakes.
Drainage Solutions LLC - St Louis
Many drainage problems result from improperly graded yards. Yards that are too flat
allow for too much rainfall to be absorbed into the ground, creating large problematic
puddles that saturate the soil and anything around them. In some cases, this excess
rainwater can even cause sinkholes in the yard. At Big Bend Landscaping, our
experienced professionals can help remedy these issues by correctly "grading" your
yard to control the flow of rainfall and channel water away from low-lying areas, homes
and foundations, as well as trees and flowerbeds. For more information on our grading
services, please contact us today. Before beginning a new drainage project, we always
recommend that you call your local utility company to have any underground lines
marked before digging. This will avoid any mishaps that could result in costly repairs.
Waterproofing at St. Louis Missouri
Waterproofing Repairing Basement Walls
Wet basement walls can lead to serious problems, including mold, rot,
musty odors and structural damage. The problem may be as simple as
hairline cracks in the concrete or as severe as bowing and buckling
foundation walls. Whatever the situation, you can count on your
local waterproofing contractor to diagnose and fix it with trusted,
permanent solutions that include interior drainage systems, sump pumps,
dehumidifiers and basement vapor barriers. Each comes with a long-term,
nationally backed, transferable warranty and is designed to work together
to keep your home permanently dry.
The first step in repairing basement cracks is to prepare the surface of the
wall. This involves cleaning the area of dirt, mud or debris that has
accumulated around the crack. It is important to ensure the crack is
completely dry as this will help the epoxy sealant adhere properly. Next, a
layer of fast-curing epoxy is applied over the crack to secure and seal it.
Once the epoxy has cured, the injection ports are filled with expanding
polyurethane and the crack is sealed from both sides.
This process works on all types of foundation cracks and is particularly
effective on leaking basement walls that have been previously repaired
with epoxy sealants. It is also an excellent solution for repairing cracks
that have become more significant due to soil movement and shrinkage.
Exterior waterproofing methods are also available to repair problems like
standing water in the yard, window wells filling with water, downspouts
dumping water near the foundation or a lack of slope in the landscaping.
Fixing these issues can often be as simple as correcting the yard grade
and installing French drains or as complex as excavation and installation
of a drainage system. Each approach is a permanent solution that will
eliminate the need for costly repairs in the future.

Uncovering the Benefits of Bioretention
Basin Construction
Uncovering the Benefits of Bioretention Basin
Construction
Bioretention basin construction is a stormwater management method that mimics the natural processes
that slow and treat stormwater runoff in forested ecosystems. A typical system contains multiple removal
mechanisms to filter out pollutants, a shallow ponding area, and soil particles that help evenly distribute
water. These shallow depressions in the landscape can be constructed adjacent to parking lots to
intercept pollutants from car exhaust, oily road surfaces, and other sources of pollution. Once the
pollutants have been filtered out of stormwater, they can be infiltrated into groundwater for further
treatment.
Using this natural process reduces the need for additional built infrastructure, such as stormwater pipes
or drainage systems, which can have high initial costs and maintenance expenses. In addition, the
filtered stormwater can reduce damage caused by flooding or erosion. These cost benefits can make
bioretention a viable option for many projects.
To maximize the efficiency of a bioretention basin, the design should include a gravel substrate that can
support the growth of vegetation. During the planting process, care should be taken to plant only native
species of plants. This will limit the need for fertilizers and pesticides in the future. In addition, a 2 - to 4-
inch layer of double-shredded hardwood mulch should cover the surface of the cell. This type of mulch is
less prone to floating in standing water, which will minimize maintenance costs.
Bioretention cells must be placed on areas of the site with the best in filtration rates. To increase
infiltration, the soil should be amended with organic material such as manure and compost. The site
should also be graded with a drop of at least 1- to 3-inch from the pavement to the maximum water level
in the bioretention cell. Creating this slope will ensure that no stormwater is left to pond in the parking lot
or spill over into other impervious areas and cause flood and erosion problems.
In order to effectively capture pollutant loads, a bioretention system should contain a layer of soil with a
permeability of at least 2 in/hr. In cases where the native soil permeability is too low, an underdrain may
be necessary.
The system should also contain a gravel substrate for backfill. This will allow the gravel to be crushed
and removed in case of structural failure or sediment accumulation. In addition, the underdrain should be
protected by a geotextile to prevent any debris from entering the drainage system.
Bioretention cell maintenance will require inspections for sediment build-up, structural failure, and
standing water on a regular basis. Maintenance activities should include mowing the vegetation, weeding,
and re-mulching void areas. The soil should be tested regularly to determine if the native soil
permeability is sufficient to infiltrate stormwater.
For the best performance, a B7 system should be designed with a ratio of bioretention area to catchment
area equal to that of the A1 and A2 systems in this study. The A1 and A2 systems have the highest
environmental impacts mainly due to the use of concrete for the structure and pumice in the filter media
mixture, which is associated with long transportation distances.
Why You Need Foundation Drainage in St
Louis
If you live in St Louis then you know the rain can cause major problems for homes
and businesses if proper drainage systems are not in place. A proper drainage
system can protect your home from foundation issues, mold and mildew and many
other problems that often occur due to flooding or water pooling close to the
building's foundation.
Foundation Drainage is designed to prevent groundwater and surface water from
pooling, infiltrating and damaging foundations, lawn areas, landscaping and
hardscape projects such as patios, decks, driveways and pools. It can also prevent
soil compaction, reduce weed growth and promote plant health and water
conservation.
Proper grading and drainage system installation is one of the best investments you
can make for your property. This will not only save you money by preventing costly
yard and foundation repairs but it will add to the value of your property as well.
There are many different drainage systems available on the market today. Each has
its own set of advantages and disadvantages. We often recommend the French
Drain system to our clients because it is an effective, durable and affordable
solution for a wide variety of drainage needs. The French Drain system consists of
a perforated pipe surrounded by clean rock that is installed under the surface of the
soil. When it rains water droplets flow through the perforations and into the pipe,
where it is carried away from the area and deposited into a collection basin or
storm sewer.
This type of drainage system is often used to protect pavement from water-related
damage. It can prevent cracking, heaving and potholes by removing the water from
underneath the pavement and directing it to a catch basin or storm sewer.
Foundation Drainage is also a great option for residential and commercial
properties that have a lot of tree roots growing around their foundations. Without a
proper drainage system in place, these roots can heave the foundation of the house
and create serious structural problems that require expensive repair. With a French
drain in place, these roots are directed away from the foundation of the house and
prevented from entering through window wells and other openings.
If you are experiencing signs of a wet basement, mold or mildew or any other
problems that commonly occur during or after a heavy rainstorm, then it's time to
find an experienced waterproofing expert to examine your foundation and in stall a
permanent drainage system. Call Foundation Recovery Systems today to schedule
a free inspection and estimate !
French Drainage System
A French drain is a drainage system designed to redirect water away from a
particular area, typically used to prevent water from pooling around
foundations or in low-lying areas. The main component of a French drain is a
perforated pipe that is installed in a trench and surrounded by gravel or
crushed stone. The pipe allows water to enter and flow through it, while the
gravel or crushed stone acts as a filter and provides a path for the water to
move away from the area.
In some cases, the perforated pipe may be wrapped in a geotextile fabric,
commonly referred to as a "sock." The purpose of the sock is to prevent the
surrounding soil or debris from entering the pipe and clogging it over time. The
sock acts as a filter, allowing water to pass through while keeping the pipe
clear.
If you're looking for sock pipe for French drains in the St. Louis area, I
recommend reaching out to https://drainageteam.com. They should be able to
provide you with the specific product or suggest suitable alternatives for your
French drain project.
Consult with a professional or follow local building codes and regulations when
installing a French drain to ensure it's done correctly and meets the necessary
requirements for your area.
What is AR Storm ?
An Atmospheric River (AR) storm, also known as a "Pineapple Express" in some
cases, is a meteorological phenomenon characterized by a long and narrow
corridor of concentrated moisture in the atmosphere. These atmospheric rivers
are like "rivers in the sky" and can transport significant amounts of water vapor
over vast distances.
AR storms typically form in the tropics or subtropics and can extend for
thousands of kilometers. They are often associated with the presence of a
strong and persistent low-level jet stream that transports the moisture-laden
air. When an AR encounters a mountain range, such as the western coast of
North America, it can result in heavy rainfall or snowfall on the windward side
of the mountains.
These storms can have significant impacts on weather patterns and can cause
intense precipitation, leading to flooding, landslides, and other related hazards.
AR storms can contribute to both beneficial and destructive weather conditions
depending on factors such as the duration, intensity, and location of the storm.
Scientists and meteorologists closely monitor atmospheric rivers to better
understand their behavior and to improve forecasting of associated weather
events. Advanced monitoring and prediction techniques have been developed
to help anticipate and mitigate the potential impacts of these storms,
especially in areas prone to flooding and other related hazards.
It's important to note that while AR storms are a recognized meteorological
phenomenon, the term "AR storm" itself may not be a universally used term
and can vary in popular usage or specific contexts.
What are Atmospheric Rivers ?
Atmospheric rivers are narrow bands of moisture-filled air that flow from the
tropics to higher latitudes. These weather phenomena can be thousands of
miles long and carry as much water vapor as the Amazon River. Atmospheric
rivers have a significant impact on global climate patterns, often bringing much-
needed rain to drought-stricken regions or causing devastating floods in others.
Atmospheric rivers play a crucial role in California's water supply because they
account for up to 50% of the state's annual precipitation. However, they can
also lead to destructive mudslides and flash floods if they collide with land
features like mountains or hills. Scientists are closely monitoring atmospheric
river activity using satellite data and ground-based sensors, hoping to improve
our understanding of how these weather systems form and behave.
Overall, atmospheric rivers bring both benefits and risks depending on their
intensity, duration, and location.
How to Find Professional Drainage Contractors ?
When it comes to finding a professional drainage contractor, you need to take
your time and do your research. There are many factors to consider, including
experience, reputation, and pricing. Here are some tips on how to find the
right drainage contractor for your needs.
Firstly, ask for recommendations from friends and family members who have
worked with professional drainage contractors in the past. They can provide
valuable insights about their experiences with different contractors and help
you make an informed decision. You can also search online directories or
websites that list local contractors in your area.
Secondly, check the credentials of the drainage contractor you’re considering
hiring. Make sure they are licensed, insured, and bonded. This will protect you
from any liability in case of accidents or damages during the project.
Lastly, schedule a consultation with the potential contractor before signing
any contract or agreement.
Corrugated Piping vs SDR35 for Downspout Drainage
Systems
When it comes to downspout drainage systems, choosing the right type of piping is
crucial. Corrugated piping and SDR35 are two popular options for this purpose.
While both types have their own advantages and disadvantages, it's important to
understand the differences between them in order to make an informed decision.
Corrugated piping is made from polyethylene material and features a corrugated
exterior surface. It’s flexible, easy to install, and can accommodate uneven terrain.
However, one major drawback of corrugated piping is that it's prone to clogging due
to its ribbed interior surface which can trap debris. This can result in reduced water
flow and even blockages over time.
On the other hand, SDR35 (Standard Dimension Ratio 35) pipe is made from PVC
material with a smooth interior wall that allows for better water flow.
What’s the investment difference in a Corrugated vs SDR35 PVC
drainage solution ?
If you are considering a drainage solution for your property, you have probably come
across two popular options: Corrugated Piping and SDR35 PVC. While both of these
piping materials can be used for downspout drainage systems, they have distinct
differences that can affect their cost and performance.
Corrugated Piping is a flexible and lightweight material that is commonly used in
landscaping projects due to its affordability. It is made of polyethylene plastic that
has been corrugated to provide strength and flexibility. This type of piping is easy to
install, but it may not be the best option for areas with heavy traffic or where the soil
shifts frequently. In comparison, SDR35 PVC is a rigid material that offers greater
durability and resistance to heavy loads. It has a smooth interior surface that allows
for better water flow and reduces the risk of clogs.
Get Ready for the Spring Rains
St. Louis, Missouri is a city that has experienced its fair share of flooding due to
heavy rainfall and its location on the Mississippi River. Therefore, it is crucial for
residential homes in St. Louis to have efficient drainage systems. Residential
drainage systems are designed to prevent water from pooling around the foundation
of a home, which can cause foundation damage and mold growth.
One popular type of residential drainage system used in St. Louis is the French drain.
A French drain consists of a trench filled with gravel and a perforated pipe that
directs water away from the home's foundation towards an area where it can safely
be absorbed into the ground or drained away from the property. The French drain
system is especially effective in areas with high precipitation levels like St. Louis,
where water can accumulate quickly if not properly managed through proper
drainage channels.
If you're dealing with a constant water problem on your property, it's time to

Why Choose Drainage Team?

  • 1. Green Infrastructure Solutions for Complete Stormwater Management Complete Stormwater Management The goal of stormwater management is to maintain the natural hydrologic cycle, prevent flooding, minimize undesirable stream erosion and protect water quality. The most common means of achieving these goals is to reduce the amount of stormwater runoff. This is accomplished by reducing the volume of water, slowing its flow and detaining pollutants. Green infrastructure solutions that maintain or restore the natural hydrologic process are the primary methods used to accomplish this goal. Traditional stormwater management models rely on the draining of urban runoff as quickly as possible, through channels and pipes. However, this type of solution merely transfers flood problems from one area to another. In addition, it causes a significant increase in peak flow rates and the cost of stormwater management. These costs can be mitigated by utilizing on-site detention, including infiltration trenches, pervious surfaces and detention ponds. Infiltration is the ability of soil to absorb rainfall and snowmelt, which enables water to soak into the ground. The natural soaking of stormwater helps to reduce flooding and erosion issues, protect water quality, resupply the soil with moisture, reduce stream turbidity and promote groundwater recharge. Infiltration is an essential part of any sustainable and regenerative landscape. While rain is falling, it collects pollutants from the surrounding environment, such as fertilizers and pesticides, and can carry them to nearby streams and lakes. These pollutants can pollute drinking water, cause ecological damage and harm human health. Often, these chemicals can be carried by stormwater to areas that are not impacted by human activity and enter the aquatic food chain. As a result, the phosphorus content in these water bodies can become extremely high, creating unhealthy conditions for fish and other animals that consume them. Often, the only way to reduce the levels of phosphorus is by detaining the water in an impoundment and filtering it. Phosphorus control is a critical element of any comprehensive sustainability plan, as it can have a profound impact on the environmental and economic health of our region. To help communities achieve this goal, we have developed an innovative, low-cost and simple to implement stormwater management system. The system utilizes a concrete tank with a unique baffle wall and trash rack, which ensures that all settled materials and floatable debris is separated from the filtration media. Our team can design an array of green infrastructure techniques for your site, including infiltration trenches and permeable pavers, to provide stormwater management solutions for any budget. Our experience with the complex permitting process also saves our clients time and money, both during construction and during ongoing maintenance. In addition, our staff works closely with the Albany County Stormwater Coalition, a self - governing group of 13 municipal entities regulated as MS4s, to ensure efficient, consistent and cost-effective compliance with MS4 stormwater regulations. To learn more about the Coalition, click here.
  • 2. Erosion Control in St Louis Missouri Erosion is a natural occurrence that can damage landscapes and structures. It can also be a safety hazard, especially in slopes or downhill areas. It occurs as a result of natural factors, such as extraordinary rainfall or the lack of vegetation to hold soil in place. Erosion control is an important part of landscape design and must be taken into consideration during the planning process. Whether you are landscaping a new lawn or building a commercial property, it is necessary to plan for erosion control. Contractors who specialize in erosion control can help you choose the best products and materials to prevent erosion and maintain a healthy lawn. They will consider factors such as soil type, slope angle and average rainfall to provide you with the best solution. There are many different types of erosion control methods, but most fall into two categories. Plants and hardscapes are commonly used to treat erosion problems, but there are many other solutions as well. These include terracing, water diversion, retaining walls and grid systems. A landscape architect will know the best options for your property based on local conditions, such as soil type and slope angles. Land disturbances that disturb more than one acre require the submittal of an erosion and sediment control plan and approval from the Department of Environmental Quality. Once an erosion and sediment control plan is approved, all construction activities must be performed in accordance with the approved plan. The purpose of the erosion and sediment control program is to protect the quality of State waters by minimizing suspended sediment (soil particles carried by runoff) generated from construction activities and discharging it into lakes, streams and rivers. The program is administered by the Department of Environmental Quality through local county offices and the City of Maryland Heights. Soil erosion is a serious problem in St. Louis Missouri and the surrounding area. It can cause landslides, flooding and other problems that are harmful to the environment. It is essential to have proper erosion control techniques in order to protect the environment and public health. A number of people who have a lot of land often turn to erosion control companies for assistance. These companies can offer services such as silt fencing, seeding, straw baling, staked straw logs and mulch blowing. Choosing the right company to assist you will ensure that your erosion problems are dealt with quickly and properly. Storm water runoff is often the source of erosion, as it can carry soil and other debris from disturbed areas. Erosion can be a problem for businesses and homes, as it can lead to flooding and property damage. This is why it is important to have good drainage systems in your home or business. This will prevent standing water from causing erosion and flooding issues. A drainage system can be a great investment for your home or business, as it will prevent erosion and standing water from damaging your property. In addition, it can improve the appearance of your property and increase its value.
  • 3. Stormwater Basins A stormwater basin is a vegetated depression designed to store and collect runoff as a permanent pool of water that removes pollutants through settling and biological uptake. Basins are used on sites where it is impractical or impossible to divert stormwater flow to downstream natural or open waters. The basins are constructed to prevent large volumes of stormwater from rushing into nearby streams during rain and snowmelt events by holding the water until it can be slowly released into stream, soils and groundwater. Basins can be found in urban, suburban and rural settings and resemble ponds or bowl-shaped areas planted with grass. Some basins hold water at all times, resembling ponds; others drain completely. Both types of basins are useful in reducing flooding and erosion problems associated with development on impermeable surfaces such as roads, parking lots, buildings and rooftops. In addition to preventing flood problems, basins can improve water quality by removing sediment and other pollutants from stormwater before it flows into nearby streams and rivers. Sediment-laden stormwater is typically channeled to a stormwater basin through street and parking lot drainage systems, swales and drain channels, and/or pipe systems. Once the basins are full, they may discharge to downstream waters via a weir structure or be directed to an adjacent detention or infiltration basin that will operate much like a dry detention pond. During the construction of this basin, a weir and skimmer were installed at the inflow and outflow to monitor water quality during rainfall events. The turbidity data collected at the outflow weir for the 16 November 2011 and 5 December 2011 rainfall events indicated that the basin performed well by capturing suspended sediments with little impact on turbidity at the basin outflow. This was due to the fact that most of the coarse sand in the basin had already settled out of suspension during the previous rainfall event (which diluted the sediment-laden stormwater) and the incorrect PAM was used by the contractor on the construction day for the 5 December 2011 rain event (which increased the amount of dissolved TSS in the outflow). Using the correct PAM is important in achieving high removal efficiencies for TSS, phosphorus and nitrogen for both wet and dry detention ponds and sediment basins. It is critical that the contractor use a formulation with appropriate particle size distribution, which is usually based on sieve analysis of the raw soil. It is als o critical that the contractor dose the correct amount of flocculating agent for each rainfall event. Otherwise, the effectiveness of the sediment basin to remove TSS, phosphorus and nitrogen will not be achieved. A failure to do so could result in excessive algal blooms that kill the plants, harm wildlife and decrease overall aesthetics. In addition, the nutrient concentrations in the basin outflow may increase over time and require regular flushing to maintain optimal performance. For further information on this subject, check out our blog post on the importance of doing the right thing when it comes to PAM dosing in sediment basins. Drainage St. Louis Missouri
  • 4. Drainage St. Louis Missouri The drainage system of your property is an essential part of a well-designed landscape. A proper drainage system will protect your home, yard, and landscaping from excessive moisture, soil erosion, mosquito breeding, and other problems caused by too much water. At Big Bend Landscaping, we provide a wide variety of drainage solutions to fit your individual needs. Downspout Piping Drain Grates Downspouts are not only an important part of the water drainage system of your home; they also make it possible to collect rain and run-off water for reuse in irrigating plants, washing cars, or other outdoor activities. Downspouts are usually installed in the eaves of your home to collect and carry stormwater away from the foundation of your house, keeping it from entering your basement or other areas of your home. French Drains A French drain is a popular drainage solution for lawns and other landscaped areas of your home. When constructed properly a French drain will elim inate areas of standing water which can be an ideal breading ground for mosquitoes. Generally, the term “French drain” refers to a perforated (holes drilled into the pipe for water to drain) PVC drain pipe that is wrapped in a drain cloth. The drain cloth helps keep debris such as leaves and grass from clogging the pipe. A trench is dug into the problem area and then the pipe is placed in the trench. The trench is filled with clean rock and then top soil is placed over the drain pipe. This allows for normal lawn growth while keeping the area dry. French drains work because the dirt in the trench is permeable allowing for water to pass through it easily and to the pipe. The water then flows to a d ischarge point such as a gutter downspout, sump pump, or other suitable location. In addition to helping prevent standing water in your yard, French drains help reduce the amount of sediment that ends up in area streams, rivers and lakes. Drainage Solutions LLC - St Louis Many drainage problems result from improperly graded yards. Yards that are too flat allow for too much rainfall to be absorbed into the ground, creating large problematic puddles that saturate the soil and anything around them. In some cases, this excess rainwater can even cause sinkholes in the yard. At Big Bend Landscaping, our experienced professionals can help remedy these issues by correctly "grading" your yard to control the flow of rainfall and channel water away from low-lying areas, homes and foundations, as well as trees and flowerbeds. For more information on our grading services, please contact us today. Before beginning a new drainage project, we always recommend that you call your local utility company to have any underground lines marked before digging. This will avoid any mishaps that could result in costly repairs. Waterproofing at St. Louis Missouri
  • 5. Waterproofing Repairing Basement Walls Wet basement walls can lead to serious problems, including mold, rot, musty odors and structural damage. The problem may be as simple as hairline cracks in the concrete or as severe as bowing and buckling foundation walls. Whatever the situation, you can count on your local waterproofing contractor to diagnose and fix it with trusted, permanent solutions that include interior drainage systems, sump pumps, dehumidifiers and basement vapor barriers. Each comes with a long-term, nationally backed, transferable warranty and is designed to work together to keep your home permanently dry. The first step in repairing basement cracks is to prepare the surface of the wall. This involves cleaning the area of dirt, mud or debris that has accumulated around the crack. It is important to ensure the crack is completely dry as this will help the epoxy sealant adhere properly. Next, a layer of fast-curing epoxy is applied over the crack to secure and seal it. Once the epoxy has cured, the injection ports are filled with expanding polyurethane and the crack is sealed from both sides. This process works on all types of foundation cracks and is particularly effective on leaking basement walls that have been previously repaired with epoxy sealants. It is also an excellent solution for repairing cracks that have become more significant due to soil movement and shrinkage. Exterior waterproofing methods are also available to repair problems like standing water in the yard, window wells filling with water, downspouts dumping water near the foundation or a lack of slope in the landscaping. Fixing these issues can often be as simple as correcting the yard grade and installing French drains or as complex as excavation and installation of a drainage system. Each approach is a permanent solution that will eliminate the need for costly repairs in the future.

  • 7. Uncovering the Benefits of Bioretention Basin Construction Uncovering the Benefits of Bioretention Basin Construction Bioretention basin construction is a stormwater management method that mimics the natural processes that slow and treat stormwater runoff in forested ecosystems. A typical system contains multiple removal mechanisms to filter out pollutants, a shallow ponding area, and soil particles that help evenly distribute water. These shallow depressions in the landscape can be constructed adjacent to parking lots to intercept pollutants from car exhaust, oily road surfaces, and other sources of pollution. Once the pollutants have been filtered out of stormwater, they can be infiltrated into groundwater for further treatment. Using this natural process reduces the need for additional built infrastructure, such as stormwater pipes or drainage systems, which can have high initial costs and maintenance expenses. In addition, the filtered stormwater can reduce damage caused by flooding or erosion. These cost benefits can make bioretention a viable option for many projects. To maximize the efficiency of a bioretention basin, the design should include a gravel substrate that can support the growth of vegetation. During the planting process, care should be taken to plant only native species of plants. This will limit the need for fertilizers and pesticides in the future. In addition, a 2 - to 4- inch layer of double-shredded hardwood mulch should cover the surface of the cell. This type of mulch is less prone to floating in standing water, which will minimize maintenance costs. Bioretention cells must be placed on areas of the site with the best in filtration rates. To increase infiltration, the soil should be amended with organic material such as manure and compost. The site should also be graded with a drop of at least 1- to 3-inch from the pavement to the maximum water level in the bioretention cell. Creating this slope will ensure that no stormwater is left to pond in the parking lot or spill over into other impervious areas and cause flood and erosion problems. In order to effectively capture pollutant loads, a bioretention system should contain a layer of soil with a permeability of at least 2 in/hr. In cases where the native soil permeability is too low, an underdrain may be necessary. The system should also contain a gravel substrate for backfill. This will allow the gravel to be crushed and removed in case of structural failure or sediment accumulation. In addition, the underdrain should be protected by a geotextile to prevent any debris from entering the drainage system. Bioretention cell maintenance will require inspections for sediment build-up, structural failure, and standing water on a regular basis. Maintenance activities should include mowing the vegetation, weeding, and re-mulching void areas. The soil should be tested regularly to determine if the native soil permeability is sufficient to infiltrate stormwater. For the best performance, a B7 system should be designed with a ratio of bioretention area to catchment area equal to that of the A1 and A2 systems in this study. The A1 and A2 systems have the highest environmental impacts mainly due to the use of concrete for the structure and pumice in the filter media mixture, which is associated with long transportation distances.
  • 8. Why You Need Foundation Drainage in St Louis If you live in St Louis then you know the rain can cause major problems for homes and businesses if proper drainage systems are not in place. A proper drainage system can protect your home from foundation issues, mold and mildew and many other problems that often occur due to flooding or water pooling close to the building's foundation. Foundation Drainage is designed to prevent groundwater and surface water from pooling, infiltrating and damaging foundations, lawn areas, landscaping and hardscape projects such as patios, decks, driveways and pools. It can also prevent soil compaction, reduce weed growth and promote plant health and water conservation. Proper grading and drainage system installation is one of the best investments you can make for your property. This will not only save you money by preventing costly yard and foundation repairs but it will add to the value of your property as well. There are many different drainage systems available on the market today. Each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. We often recommend the French Drain system to our clients because it is an effective, durable and affordable solution for a wide variety of drainage needs. The French Drain system consists of a perforated pipe surrounded by clean rock that is installed under the surface of the soil. When it rains water droplets flow through the perforations and into the pipe, where it is carried away from the area and deposited into a collection basin or storm sewer. This type of drainage system is often used to protect pavement from water-related damage. It can prevent cracking, heaving and potholes by removing the water from underneath the pavement and directing it to a catch basin or storm sewer. Foundation Drainage is also a great option for residential and commercial properties that have a lot of tree roots growing around their foundations. Without a proper drainage system in place, these roots can heave the foundation of the house and create serious structural problems that require expensive repair. With a French drain in place, these roots are directed away from the foundation of the house and prevented from entering through window wells and other openings. If you are experiencing signs of a wet basement, mold or mildew or any other problems that commonly occur during or after a heavy rainstorm, then it's time to find an experienced waterproofing expert to examine your foundation and in stall a permanent drainage system. • 9. French Drainage System A French drain is a drainage system designed to redirect water away from a particular area, typically used to prevent water from pooling around foundations or in low-lying areas. The main component of a French drain is a perforated pipe that is installed in a trench and surrounded by gravel or crushed stone. The pipe allows water to enter and flow through it, while the gravel or crushed stone acts as a filter and provides a path for the water to move away from the area. In some cases, the perforated pipe may be wrapped in a geotextile fabric, commonly referred to as a "sock." The purpose of the sock is to prevent the surrounding soil or debris from entering the pipe and clogging it over time. The sock acts as a filter, allowing water to pass through while keeping the pipe clear. What is AR Storm ?
  • 10. An Atmospheric River (AR) storm, also known as a "Pineapple Express" in some cases, is a meteorological phenomenon characterized by a long and narrow corridor of concentrated moisture in the atmosphere. These atmospheric rivers are like "rivers in the sky" and can transport significant amounts of water vapor over vast distances. AR storms typically form in the tropics or subtropics and can extend for thousands of kilometers. They are often associated with the presence of a strong and persistent low-level jet stream that transports the moisture-laden air. When an AR encounters a mountain range, such as the western coast of North America, it can result in heavy rainfall or snowfall on the windward side of the mountains. These storms can have significant impacts on weather patterns and can cause intense precipitation, leading to flooding, landslides, and other related hazards. AR storms can contribute to both beneficial and destructive weather conditions depending on factors such as the duration, intensity, and location of the storm. Scientists and meteorologists closely monitor atmospheric rivers to better understand their behavior and to improve forecasting of associated weather events. Advanced monitoring and prediction techniques have been developed to help anticipate and mitigate the potential impacts of these storms, especially in areas prone to flooding and other related hazards. It's important to note that while AR storms are a recognized meteorological phenomenon, the term "AR storm" itself may not be a universally used term and can vary in popular usage or specific contexts. What are Atmospheric Rivers ?
  • 11. Atmospheric rivers are narrow bands of moisture-filled air that flow from the tropics to higher latitudes. These weather phenomena can be thousands of miles long and carry as much water vapor as the Amazon River. Atmospheric rivers have a significant impact on global climate patterns, often bringing much- needed rain to drought-stricken regions or causing devastating floods in others. Atmospheric rivers play a crucial role in California's water supply because they account for up to 50% of the state's annual precipitation. However, they can also lead to destructive mudslides and flash floods if they collide with land features like mountains or hills. Scientists are closely monitoring atmospheric river activity using satellite data and ground-based sensors, hoping to improve our understanding of how these weather systems form and behave. Overall, atmospheric rivers bring both benefits and risks depending on their intensity, duration, and location. How to Find Professional Drainage Contractors ?
  • 12. When it comes to finding a professional drainage contractor, you need to take your time and do your research. • 13. When it comes to downspout drainage systems, choosing the right type of piping is crucial. Corrugated piping and SDR35 are two popular options for this purpose. While both types have their own advantages and disadvantages, it's important to understand the differences between them in order to make an informed decision. Corrugated piping is made from polyethylene material and features a corrugated exterior surface. It’s flexible, easy to install, and can accommodate uneven terrain. However, one major drawback of corrugated piping is that it's prone to clogging due to its ribbed interior surface which can trap debris. This can result in reduced water flow and even blockages over time. On the other hand, SDR35 (Standard Dimension Ratio 35) pipe is made from PVC material with a smooth interior wall that allows for better water flow. What’s the investment difference in a Corrugated vs SDR35 PVC drainage solution ? If you are considering a drainage solution for your property, you have probably come across two popular options: Corrugated Piping and SDR35 PVC. While both of these piping materials can be used for downspout drainage systems, they have distinct differences that can affect their cost and performance. Corrugated Piping is a flexible and lightweight material that is commonly used in landscaping projects due to its affordability. It is made of polyethylene plastic that has been corrugated to provide strength and flexibility. This type of piping is easy to install, but it may not be the best option for areas with heavy traffic or where the soil shifts frequently. In comparison, SDR35 PVC is a rigid material that offers greater durability and resistance to heavy loads. It has a smooth interior surface that allows for better water flow and reduces the risk of clogs. Get Ready for the Spring Rains
