Since the emergence of the Macintosh All-In-One (AIO) 30 years ago
MULTI-TOUCH INTERACTION developments in small form factor single board computers have spawned new
PROVIDES: generations of Laptops, Tablet PCs, and AIO panel PCs with efficient LCD
displays and innovative enclosures for both consumer and industrial use.
    • Convenience and flexibility Multi-Touch capabilities are currently a hot topic in the AIO market. Revenue
             in communications                from multi-touch consumer products is forecast to reach over $4B by 2015;
    • Free rotations and approximately half of the global revenue from touch-screen and controllers.
zoom-in/out emphasis of The driving forces behind this new interest are extremely popular hand held
photos, graphics, & devices and large OEMs attempting to capture additional market share by
diagrams leveraging the multi-touch functionality. Additional fuel for this renewal is
    • Support of unlimited commercial AIO products offering wide aspect ratio displays with TV Resolution.
number of simultaneous Many commercial AIOs incorporate standard, short life cycle desktop
touch events (Windows 7 processors and motherboards cooled by several fans because processors
functionality) generate a significant amount of heat within very confined spaces. High
    • Recognition of up to 9 ambient temperature conditions are a primary reliability concern for any
different gestures system; since MTBF for components is significantly reduced when operated at
(Windows 7 functionality) or in excess of maximum ratings. This is especially true for units that
                                              incorporate low cost components.

There is also significant ongoing development in AIO products for high reliability and long life cycle applications. In
contrast to the typical commercial offerings, these products are designed with low power mobile processors and
industrial grade single-board computers. The use of extended temperature range components safeguard against
premature failure in extreme environmental conditions. Additionally, the incorporation of custom designed enclosures
provide efficient heat transfer systems and improved heat dissipation. As a result, the typical MTBF for a well
designed industrial AIO is in excess of 100k hours or roughly 4x the typical MTBF of a commercial AIO.

Furthermore, to maintain reverse compatibility with existing systems, AIOs designed for industrial and medical
applications incorporate standard aspect ratio (4:3 or 5:4) LCD panels in sizes ranging from 5.7” through 19”. Wide
aspect ratio displays are also available and in development for customers who prefer to move to wide format displays.

• Medium Range Computing –
Celeron M + GM45 (Fan-less) Reductions in size and power consumption of single board computers and
• Lower Power Computing – improvements in heat transfer mechanisms have allowed for design of smaller
Intel Atom N270 + 945GSE more compact enclosures. However, a smaller footprint limits the availability and
variety of interconnectivity ports, peripheral floppy, and optical drive bays.
(Fan-less) Common limitations of current long life cycle AIO designs are:

        • Limited space for FDD and optical drives.
        • Limited space for PCIe or Mini-PCI expansion slots, reducing the ability to interface with parallel printers, SCSI
devices, and older peripheral storage technologies.
        • Reverse compatibility issues
        • Older processor technologies are not supported (Pentium III and 4).

                        1800 Penn Street Melbourne, FL 32901 321.728.0172 www.DTx.com
• Long lifecycle LCD panel sizes are limited:
         ° 15” 17” and 19” Standard Aspect Ratio – SXGA Resolution 1280x1024;
         ° 22” Wide Aspect Ratio – WSXGA Resolution 1650x1080.
    • Potential size and weight constraints for mounting on arm systems designed to only support the weight of a
        typical LCD display.

Existing variations of AIO designs, such as the combination of display with a box PC bolted onto the back of the
display, may be a viable solution for some applications. In evaluation, these variations suffer from the same limita-
tions sited. Furthermore, these systems require separate costly regulatory certifications for both display and PC. This
may be an effective strategy for applications that do not require a lot of computing power (a thin client system), or
for systems that have the flexibility to change either the display or PC without a significant amount of testing, such
(POS or digital signage systems).

Overcoming Existing Limitations & Improving Future AIO Technologies
As the current technology and associated limitations improve in the development of the next generation of AIO
products, there is a focused set of design criteria:

    • Address limitations without increasing size, weight, power consumption, or cost.
    • Improve performance, interconnectivity, and ergonomics.
    • Enhance on-board graphics for applications that require basic computing capabilities with ultra low power
        consumption.
    • Provide multiple I/O options to improve manageability and flexibility:
        ° PnP modular expansion slots for I/O flexibility and additional storage;
° Portable expansion cards for PCIe, USB, Serial, Parallel, and SATA interfaces.
    • Increase product range offering standard and wide aspect ratio in 12” through 22” models.
    • Integrate multi-touch capability with seamless flat bezel design.

White paper - All In One

  • 1. White Paper: Market Trends for Medical, Industrial & Commercial All-In-One (AIO) Panel PCs 1800 Penn Street Melbourne, FL 32901 321.728.0172 www.DTx.com EN ISO 13485:2003 ISO 9001:2008
  • 2. Since the emergence of the Macintosh All-In-One (AIO) 30 years ago MULTI-TOUCH INTERACTION developments in small form factor single board computers have spawned new PROVIDES: generations of Laptops, Tablet PCs, and AIO panel PCs with efficient LCD displays and innovative enclosures for both consumer and industrial use. • Convenience and flexibility Multi-Touch capabilities are currently a hot topic in the AIO market. Revenue in communications from multi-touch consumer products is forecast to reach over $4B by 2015; • Free rotations and approximately half of the global revenue from touch-screen and controllers. zoom-in/out emphasis of The driving forces behind this new interest are extremely popular hand held photos, graphics, & devices and large OEMs attempting to capture additional market share by diagrams leveraging the multi-touch functionality. Additional fuel for this renewal is • Support of unlimited commercial AIO products offering wide aspect ratio displays with TV Resolution. number of simultaneous Many commercial AIOs incorporate standard, short life cycle desktop touch events (Windows 7 processors and motherboards cooled by several fans because processors functionality) generate a significant amount of heat within very confined spaces. High • Recognition of up to 9 ambient temperature conditions are a primary reliability concern for any different gestures system; since MTBF for components is significantly reduced when operated at (Windows 7 functionality) or in excess of maximum ratings. This is especially true for units that incorporate low cost components. There is also significant ongoing development in AIO products for high reliability and long life cycle applications. In contrast to the typical commercial offerings, these products are designed with low power mobile processors and industrial grade single-board computers. The use of extended temperature range components safeguard against premature failure in extreme environmental conditions. Additionally, the incorporation of custom designed enclosures provide efficient heat transfer systems and improved heat dissipation. As a result, the typical MTBF for a well designed industrial AIO is in excess of 100k hours or roughly 4x the typical MTBF of a commercial AIO. Furthermore, to maintain reverse compatibility with existing systems, AIOs designed for industrial and medical applications incorporate standard aspect ratio (4:3 or 5:4) LCD panels in sizes ranging from 5.7” through 19”. Wide aspect ratio displays are also available and in development for customers who prefer to move to wide format displays. Market Applications for AIO Products Medical, General Light At a glance there are many types of AIO products available for a wide spectrum Industrial, & Security of industries. Typical design criteria and features are: • High Impact Light Weight Plastic Enclosure • Basic & Intensive Computing • Compact Space Saving Design (Standard Aspect Ratio 5.7”- • Long Life (embedded) CPUs and Chipsets 19”) • Low Power (Industrial Small Form Factor SBC) • Modular Expansion • High Reliability (Heat Transfer Mechanism) Widescreen w Flexible I/O • Long Life Standard or Wide Aspect Ratio LCD Panel (12.1”-15.6”) • Integrated Touch Screen and Controller • Medical ICU Fan-less Dual Core (17” & 22”) Additionally these products are available with a wide variety of single board • Industrial Automation (5.7” & computers and CPU/chipset combinations. The level of processing power and 7”) interconnectivity required will determine the best SBC/Processor/Chipset combination for a given application. • Security Access Control (5.7”, 8”, 8.4”, 12.1”) There are currently 4 levels of products AIO Platforms for Mission available in current AIO models, as well as Retail, Food Service, & Critical Applications three standard screen sizes and many Hospitality (Standard Aspect Ratio 17”, 19” & 22” options like fan-less cooling where high reliability and quiet operation are required. Wide Aspect Ratio 16:10) • Digital Signage Touch Screen • Medical & Industrial – Limitations of Current AIO Celeron M or Core 2 Duo + Designs GM45 (Fan-less) Although technology has taken a quantum leap since the early 1980s, many of • Intensive Computing - Core the challenges associated with AIO design are still being addressed and 2 Duo + GME965 significant improvements are being made with each new generation of products. • Medium Range Computing – Celeron M + GM45 (Fan-less) Reductions in size and power consumption of single board computers and • Lower Power Computing – improvements in heat transfer mechanisms have allowed for design of smaller Intel Atom N270 + 945GSE more compact enclosures. However, a smaller footprint limits the availability and variety of interconnectivity ports, peripheral floppy, and optical drive bays. (Fan-less) Common limitations of current long life cycle AIO designs are: • Limited space for FDD and optical drives. • Limited space for PCIe or Mini-PCI expansion slots, reducing the ability to interface with parallel printers, SCSI devices, and older peripheral storage technologies. • Reverse compatibility issues • Older processor technologies are not supported (Pentium III and 4). 1800 Penn Street Melbourne, FL 32901 321.728.0172 www.DTx.com
  • 3. Long lifecycle LCD panel sizes are limited: ° 15” 17” and 19” Standard Aspect Ratio – SXGA Resolution 1280x1024; ° 22” Wide Aspect Ratio – WSXGA Resolution 1650x1080. • Potential size and weight constraints for mounting on arm systems designed to only support the weight of a typical LCD display. Existing variations of AIO designs, such as the combination of display with a box PC bolted onto the back of the display, may be a viable solution for some applications. In evaluation, these variations suffer from the same limita- tions sited. Furthermore, these systems require separate costly regulatory certifications for both display and PC. This may be an effective strategy for applications that do not require a lot of computing power (a thin client system), or for systems that have the flexibility to change either the display or PC without a significant amount of testing, such (POS or digital signage systems). Overcoming Existing Limitations & Improving Future AIO Technologies As the current technology and associated limitations improve in the development of the next generation of AIO products, there is a focused set of design criteria: • Address limitations without increasing size, weight, power consumption, or cost. • Improve performance, interconnectivity, and ergonomics. • Enhance on-board graphics for applications that require basic computing capabilities with ultra low power consumption. • Provide multiple I/O options to improve manageability and flexibility: ° PnP modular expansion slots for I/O flexibility and additional storage; ° Portable expansion cards for PCIe, USB, Serial, Parallel, and SATA interfaces. • Increase product range offering standard and wide aspect ratio in 12” through 22” models. • Integrate multi-touch capability with seamless flat bezel design. Features and Benefits of New Technologies 54 mm Module Area USB Dongle 2 x PCIe x 1 GPS Modular expansion slots provide extensive improvements in 2x USB GSM 1x Parallel WLAN storage and I/O flexibility without sacrificing ergonomics. The Storage 2x Serial ability to add functionality through portable expansion cards will enable customers to choose the variety and quantity of I/O ports available on their AIO system. Standardized and custom cards will be available in order to meet specific configuration needs and customer requirements. Availability of additional powered USB ports will provide storage Storage Area via a flash drive or CF card. Additional storage slots for a 2 x PCIe x 1 secondary 2.5” solid state or rotating media drive and CF Card 2x USB are also built in. GPS receiver or mobile internet access will be 1x Parallel 2x Serial provided via Cell Based GSM service or 802.11 WLAN. Integration of projected capacitive multi-touch capabilities with a seamless flat-bezel design provides for high reliability in extreme environments: • Protective clear glass 7H hardness rating ° Highly resistant to chemicals and scratches ° Splash and spill resistent – IP65 Rated • Perfect edge design ° Easy to Clean/Disinfect • Available Projected Capacitive Touch Technology ° Works with a latex gloved hand! ° Enables Multi-touch Functionality Meeting Your AIO Needs Despite the quantum leap of technology since the early 1980s, the AIO is still not a one-size-fits-all solution for the i fi ll wide market spectrum. Due to the complexity of AIOs and the sheer variety of products available, DTx begins the AIO RFQ process with a comprehensive needs analysis to determine the performance criteria, enclosure type, preferred cooling and environmental requirements, Input/Output connectivity options and storage media options.
