The town of Greensburg, Kansas was almost completely destroyed by a powerful EF5 tornado in 2007, which led to 10 deaths and over 90% of the town's structures being damaged or destroyed. In the years following the disaster, the town was rebuilt through a focus on sustainability and green building practices, with goals of creating a model community for renewable energy and energy efficiency. By 2013, Greensburg had rebuilt in an environmentally friendly way and was powered completely by renewable energy from wind turbines and a solar array.
