as we expanded our operations, we built vulnerability into the system. informed by Dr. Jim O’Connell and stephen Hwang, we developed the vulnerability index and administer it to each person we find on the streets. Jim took this picture in 2000 – it’s 11 people who were homeless and who met his critiria for high health risk. they don’t look too old or sick, but only 3 of them are still alive today. People gasp when I show this picture. How can you frame behavioral health as a life or death matter?
Ed Givens was profiled by Steve Lopez inthe LA Times. he had been on the streets for 30 years – a chronic alcoholic with a wild temper.
Ed was housed by project 50 and now he’s just looking for ways to give back.
