Daniel Radcliffe
He thinks it's disgusting that the term
"friend zone" actually exists. And he's
absolutely right.
Sometimes, when women just want to be
friends with men (as opposed to dating or
sleeping with them), men call this being
trapped in the "friend zone." Which, of
course, is essentially saying, "Women are only
of value to me when they're sexually available
to me." Yeah, it's awful.
When the topic got brought up during an
interview with BuzzFeed, Radcliffe seized the
opportunity to call it exactly what it is.
"Friend zoning is, like, a terrible thing. The
idea of the 'friend zone' is a terrible male
[thing] ... Have you ever heard a girl say
they're in the 'friend zone'? ... I definitely
think the idea of 'friend zone' is just men
going 'This woman won't have sex with me.'"
Radcliffe is unapologetically
feminist to his core, and
thinks it's very backwards
that anyone wouldn't be.
Does Radcliffe stand for gender
equality? Of course.
"There seems to be a very recent
thing that you come 'out' as a
feminist," he explained to British
GQ last year. "It's a very weird
thing. I mean, yes of course, but
I'm a feminist in as much as I'm
an egalitarian about everything
and I believe in meritocracy. I
think anyone who isn't at this
point is just swimming against the
tide just like people who are
vaguely homophobic or racist or
sexist or whatever it is. I just
think 'God, you're still keeping
that up? Give it up, you've lost.'"
He stands up for his co-stars — especially when sexist Hollywood double standards are
involved.
During a promotional interview in 2014, Radcliffe brought up the fact that it's unfair for anyone to feel
uncomfortable seeing him as sex symbol simply because they witnessed him grow up on screen, while his
"Harry Potter" co-star Emma Watson had a much different experience.
"A lot of people were saying, you know, 'You're [a] really unconventional romantic lead.' And so eventually,
I got bored of hearing that and like, kind of picked someone up on it. So I was like, 'What about me is
unconventional exactly? Like, tell me.' And she said, 'Well, I think it's probably the fact that, you know, we
associated you with playing Harry and a young boy for so long, you know.' My immediate response was,
'Well, the male population has had no problems sexualizing Emma Watson immediately.'"
Selena Gomez
Besides her music,
Gomez has taken her
role-model status
seriously.
Gomez is a regular
social-media encourager
with her most loyal fans
online. They send her
encouragement and she
gives it right back.
Selena Gomez
While filming the Wizards of Waverly Place
movie in Puerto Rico, she was upset to learn
about the amount of stray and abandoned dogs
lining the beaches.
“My mom and I researched organizations that
could help us do something about all the
animals," says Gomez, who discovered Island
Dog (www.islanddog.org), an organization that
rescues adoptable stray dogs in Puerto Rico and
other islands in the Caribbean. The non-profit
also feeds, medicates and cares for the animals
it can't afford to keep in shelters. Moved by
their mission, Selena hosted a volunteer event
on March 7 near San Juan that helped raise
$17,000. "We were vaccinating the dogs and
rubbing oil on their backs so they don't get
fleas," says Gomez, who also filmed an
educational video to shed light on the situation.
Naturally, she even adopted one to bring home
as well!
Selena Gomez
A UNICEF ambassador since
2009, Gomez has held charity
concert events as well as
traveled extensively around
the world raising awareness
and funds and promoting
involvement.
Selena Gomez
Gomez has granted so many
Make-A-Wish requests that
the organization gave her a
special award.
Gomez is no stranger to
making surprise hospital visits
for fans, but as an ambassador
for the Ryan Seacrest
Foundation, she upped her
participation even more. Cue
cute kids asking her questions
about her dating life.
Why Do I Make Less Than My Male Co-Stars?
By Jennifer Lawrence
“Some news show called my essay a “bratty display”, and I was like,
“Thank you for proving my point?,” J-Law told Entertainment Weekly.
“Would you have called a man a brat?”
She also added that those spouting such criticism had clearly missed
the point of her essay. “I was very clear: My problems are not relatable.
This is not about money. I don't need money, I have plenty of money,
I'm already overpaid. What I was trying to write about was how my
own mentality was getting in my own way.”
When Lena first brought up the idea of Lenny to me, I was excited. Excited to speak to Lena, who I think is a genius, and
excited to start thinking about what to complain about (that’s not what she pitched me, it’s just what I’m gonna do). When
it comes to the subject of feminism, I’ve remained ever-so-slightly quiet. I don’t like joining conversations that feel like
they’re “trending.” I’m even the asshole who didn’t do anything about the ice-bucket challenge — which was saving lives —
because it started to feel more like a “trend” than a cause. I should have written a check, but I fucking forgot, okay? I’m not
perfect. But with a lot of talk comes change, so I want to be honest and open and, fingers crossed, not piss anyone off.
It’s hard for me to speak about my experience as a working woman because I can safely say my problems aren’t exactly
relatable. When the Sony hack happened and I found out how much less I was being paid than the lucky people with dicks,
I didn’t get mad at Sony. I got mad at myself. I failed as a negotiator because I gave up early. I didn’t want to keep fighting
over millions of dollars that, frankly, due to two franchises, I don’t need. (I told you it wasn’t relatable, don’t hate me).
But if I’m honest with myself, I would be lying if I didn’t say there was an element of wanting to be liked that influenced my
decision to close the deal without a real fight. I didn’t want to seem “difficult” or “spoiled.” At the time, that seemed like a
fine idea, until I saw the payroll on the Internet and realized every man I was working with definitely didn’t worry about
being “difficult” or “spoiled.” This could be a young-person thing. It could be a personality thing. I’m sure it’s both. But this
is an element of my personality that I’ve been working against for years, and based on the statistics, I don’t think I’m the
only woman with this issue. Are we socially conditioned to behave this way? We’ve only been able to vote for what, 90
years? I’m seriously asking — my phone is on the counter and I’m on the couch, so a calculator is obviously out of the
question. Could there still be a lingering habit of trying to express our opinions in a certain way that doesn’t “offend” or
“scare” men?
A few weeks ago at work, I spoke my mind and gave my opinion in a clear and no-bullshit way; no aggression, just blunt.
The man I was working with (actually, he was working for me) said, “Whoa! We’re all on the same team here!” As if I was
yelling at him. I was so shocked because nothing that I said was personal, offensive, or, to be honest, wrong. All I hear and
see all day are men speaking their opinions, and I give mine in the same exact manner, and you would have thought I had
said something offensive.
I’m over trying to find the “adorable” way to state my opinion and still be likable! Fuck that. I don’t think I’ve ever worked
for a man in charge who spent time contemplating what angle he should use to have his voice heard. It’s just heard. Jeremy
Renner, Christian Bale, and Bradley Cooper all fought and succeeded in negotiating powerful deals for themselves. If
anything, I’m sure they were commended for being fierce and tactical, while I was busy worrying about coming across as a
brat and not getting my fair share. Again, this might have NOTHING to do with my vagina, but I wasn’t completely wrong
when another leaked Sony email revealed a producer referring to a fellow lead actress in a negotiation as a “spoiled brat.”
For some reason, I just can’t picture someone saying that about a man.
