WHAT LEADERS DO
 Coercive power - requiring people to do things
through threats of sanctions if they don’t
 Positional power - the recognised power that comes
from the position that someone holds
 Personal power - the power granted by others who
choose to accept a person’s authority because of
who they are not what they are.
John Adair’s Action Centred Leadership
Three elements:
1. Manage the team – recognise that the way that people
work together and their relationships are critical to
performance
2. Manage individuals – recognise the needs of each person
and their different personalities, needs and expectations
3. Achieve the task – be goal focussed and be aware of
what really matters in
The three core factors of leadership
Leaders:
1. Give the people they lead a sense of direction and
purpose (where we are going, and why)
2. Generate confidence in the leader’s capability (they are
skilled, and willing and able to accept feedback on their
performance)
3. Create a willingness to accept their authority (due to
their personal integrity, character, the ability to inspire
trust, and emotional intelligence)
