Soil is the top layer of the Earth's surface, found on the ground where plants grow. It is made up of broken pieces of rock mixed with parts of dead plants and animals, and contains trapped air and water. Plants get nutrients and water from the soil through their roots, and soil quality can be improved by creating compost heaps from rotting food scraps and leaves which are broken down into fresh soil by tiny living things.
