MAN’S REJECTION OF
        GOD’S LOVE
              Module 4
Sacred Scriptures
 Genesis 3
 Genesis 4: 1-16
 Genesis 6-9
 Genesis 11: 1-9

The Fall of Man
 Adam and Eve: disobedience, pride

Genesis 3:The Fall of Man
 Adam and Eve turned away from God
their Creator in disobedience and pride
 Rejected God’s friendship
 Wanted to be “like God”
 Serpent was the image of the devil, of evil
 Demons were created naturally good by
God but became evil because of their
    doing = fallen angels

The Fall of Man
Cain and Abel: jealousy, envy

Genesis 4:1-16
 The Flood: wickedness and sin

Genesis 6-9
 The Tower of Babel: pride

Gernesis 11:1-9
397. Man, tempted by the devil, let his
trust in his Creator die in his heart
 and, abusing his freedom, disobeyed
God’s command. This is what man’s first
sin consisted of.278 All subsequent sin
would be disobedience toward God and
lack of trust in his goodness.

CCC 397, 1440, 1850, 2850
 1440 Sin is before all else an offense
against God, a rupture of communion with
him. At the same time it damages
communion with the Church. For this
    reason conversion entails both God’s
    forgiveness and reconciliation with the
    Church, which are expressed and
    accomplished liturgically by the sacrament
    of Penance and Reconciliation

CCC 1440
 is an offense against God: “Against you, you
alone, have I sinned, and done that which is
evil in your sight.”122 Sin sets itself against
God’s love for us and turns our hearts away
from it. Like the first sin, it is disobedience, a
revolt against God through the will to become
“like gods,”123 knowing and determining good
and evil. Sin is thus “love of oneself even to
contempt of God.”124 In this proud self-
exaltation, sin is diametrically opposed to the
obedience of Jesus, which achieves our
    salvation.

CCC 1850
 1857 For a sin to be mortal, three
conditions must together be met: “Mortal
sin is sin whose object is grave matter
and which is also committed with full
    knowledge and deliberate consent.

CCC 1857
 2850 The last petition to our Father is also
included in Jesus’ prayer: “I am not asking
you to take them out of the world, but I ask
you to protect them from the evil one.”163 It
touches each of us personally, but it is always
“we” who pray, in communion with the whole
Church, for the deliverance of the whole
human family. The Lord’s Prayer continually
opens us to the range of God’s economy of
salvation. Our interdependence in the drama
of sin and death is turned into solidarity in
the Body of Christ, the “communion of saints.

CCC 2850
 Man turned away from God in
  disobedience and pride
 Rejection of God’s friendship
 Devil and demons were created naturally
good by God but they became evil by
  their own doing= fallen angels

CFC 372
In rebelling against God, man and woman
  destroyed their original harmony with:
 Each other (they realized they were
  naked)
 Others (Cain’s murder of his brother Abel)
 Their community (tower of Babel)
 Nature (“cursed be the ground...”)

CFC 373
What is the origin of the condition of
  universal sinfulness?
 “Not God, but the original man and
woman, are the source of moral evil.”
 God is our Savior.

CFC 374
Was it part of God’s plan that man should
  suffer and die?
 God does not want men to suffer and die.
God’s original idea for man was paradise:
life forever and peace between God and
man and their environment, between man
  and woman.

YouCat 66
What is sin?
 At the core of sin is a rejection of God and
the refusal to accept his love. This is
manifested in a disregard for his
  commandments.
 Separation from God=separation from the
  source of life

YouCat 67
Original sin? What does the Fall of Adam
and Eve have to do with us?
 Sin in the strict sense implies guilt for
  which one is personally responsible.
  Therefore, the term “original sin”
refers, not to a personal sin, but rather to
ther disastrous, fallen state of mankind
into which the individual is born, even
before he himself sins by a free decision.

YouCat 68
Are we compelled to sin by original sin?
 No, Man, though, is deeply wounded by
original sin. In fact, however, we sin again
and again, because we are weak, ignorant
and easily misled. A sin committed under
  compulsion, moreover, would be no
sin, because sin always involves a free
  decision.

YouCat 69
How does God draw us out of the whirlpool
  of evil?
 God does not just look on as man
gradually destroys himself and he world
around him through the chain reaction of
sin. He sends us Jesus Christ, the Savior
and Redeemer, who snatches us from the
  power of sin.

YouCat 70
What are the positive effects of confession?
 Confession reconciles the sinner with God
 and the Church.

YouCat 239
What is a sin in the first place?
 A sin is a word, deed, or intention by
  which man deliberately and voluntarily
offends against the true order of
things, as God’s loving providence has
  arranged them.

YouCat 315
How can we distinguish serious sins (mortal
sins) from less serious (venial) sins ?
 Serious sin destroys the divine power of
love in a person’s heart, without which
there can be no eternal beatitude. Hence
it is also called mortal sin.
 Serious sin breaks with God
 Venial sin only strains the relationship
  with him.

YouCat 316
How can a person be delivered from serious
 sin and reunited with God?

YouCat 317
What are vices?
 Vices are negative habits that deaden and
dull the conscience, incline a person to
evil, and habitually prepare him for sin.
 Found in connection with the 7 capital
  sins:
pride, lust, anger, gluttony, envy, covetou
  sness, sloth .
 Acedia=spiritual boredom

YouCat 318
 Deep-seated disorder in our appetites and
drives that is the root-cause of many of
  our personal sins; through God’s
redeeming grace, we are strengthened to
  overcome this disorder within us
 Our concupiscence shows itself in certain
sources or roots of sin called the “seven
  capital sins”

Concupiscence
 Basic evil inclinations or disvalues which
are the origin of many sinful
  thoughts, words, or deeds
 They manifest the evil tendencies within
each of us which are the effects of original
  sin.

Seven Capital sins
PRIDE: exalting oneself beyond what is due
 and true

LUST: disordered desire for or inordinate
 enjoyment of sexual pleasure

ANGER: destructive aggressiveness

Seven Capital Sins
GLUTTONY: excessive indulgence in food or
 drink
ENVY: begrudging others their
talents, success and wishing them evil
COVETOUSNESS: desiring what to
others, leading to dishonesty, stealing and
 injustice
SLOTH: laziness and escape from exerting
 due effort

Seven Capital Sins
Is there a thing as structures of sin?
 Structures of sin exist only in a manner of
speaking. A sin is always connected with
an individual person, who knowingly and
  willingly agrees to something evil.

YouCat 320
1. I am better than all of you.
2. I love to eat even if I’m already full.
3. I give in to sexual desires by watching
     pornography and touching my
     classmates.
4. I hate doing homework.
5. I have very little patience with others.

Identify the capital sin being
described.
 6. I wish my rich classmates ill
  fortune.
 7. I buy things on impulse even
  when I don’t need them.
 8. I hate doing household chores.
 9. I smuggle sex videos in my
  computer.
 10. I like to take the easy way out.

Module 4 man s rejection of god s love

  • 1. MAN’S REJECTION OF GOD’S LOVE Module 4
  • 2. Sacred Scriptures  Genesis 3  Genesis 4: 1-16  Genesis 6-9  Genesis 11: 1-9 The Fall of Man
  • 3. Adam and Eve: disobedience, pride Genesis 3:The Fall of Man
  • 4. Adam and Eve turned away from God their Creator in disobedience and pride  Rejected God’s friendship  Wanted to be “like God”  Serpent was the image of the devil, of evil  Demons were created naturally good by God but became evil because of their doing = fallen angels The Fall of Man
  • 5. Cain and Abel: jealousy, envy Genesis 4:1-16
  • 6. The Flood: wickedness and sin Genesis 6-9
  • 7. The Tower of Babel: pride Gernesis 11:1-9
  • 8. 397. Man, tempted by the devil, let his trust in his Creator die in his heart and, abusing his freedom, disobeyed God’s command. This is what man’s first sin consisted of.278 All subsequent sin would be disobedience toward God and lack of trust in his goodness. CCC 397, 1440, 1850, 2850
  • 9. 1440 Sin is before all else an offense against God, a rupture of communion with him. At the same time it damages communion with the Church. For this reason conversion entails both God’s forgiveness and reconciliation with the Church, which are expressed and accomplished liturgically by the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation CCC 1440
  • 10. is an offense against God: “Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight.”122 Sin sets itself against God’s love for us and turns our hearts away from it. Like the first sin, it is disobedience, a revolt against God through the will to become “like gods,”123 knowing and determining good and evil. Sin is thus “love of oneself even to contempt of God.”124 In this proud self- exaltation, sin is diametrically opposed to the obedience of Jesus, which achieves our salvation. CCC 1850
  • 11. 1857 For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: “Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent. CCC 1857
  • 12. 2850 The last petition to our Father is also included in Jesus’ prayer: “I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one.”163 It touches each of us personally, but it is always “we” who pray, in communion with the whole Church, for the deliverance of the whole human family. The Lord’s Prayer continually opens us to the range of God’s economy of salvation. Our interdependence in the drama of sin and death is turned into solidarity in the Body of Christ, the “communion of saints. CCC 2850
  • 13.  Man turned away from God in disobedience and pride  Rejection of God’s friendship  Devil and demons were created naturally good by God but they became evil by their own doing= fallen angels CFC 372
  • 14. In rebelling against God, man and woman destroyed their original harmony with:  Each other (they realized they were naked)  Others (Cain’s murder of his brother Abel)  Their community (tower of Babel)  Nature (“cursed be the ground...”) CFC 373
  • 15. What is the origin of the condition of universal sinfulness?  “Not God, but the original man and woman, are the source of moral evil.”  God is our Savior. CFC 374
  • 16. Was it part of God’s plan that man should suffer and die?  God does not want men to suffer and die. God’s original idea for man was paradise: life forever and peace between God and man and their environment, between man and woman. YouCat 66
  • 17. What is sin?  At the core of sin is a rejection of God and the refusal to accept his love. This is manifested in a disregard for his commandments.  Separation from God=separation from the source of life YouCat 67
  • 18. Original sin? What does the Fall of Adam and Eve have to do with us?  Sin in the strict sense implies guilt for which one is personally responsible. Therefore, the term “original sin” refers, not to a personal sin, but rather to ther disastrous, fallen state of mankind into which the individual is born, even before he himself sins by a free decision. YouCat 68
  • 19. Are we compelled to sin by original sin?  No, Man, though, is deeply wounded by original sin. In fact, however, we sin again and again, because we are weak, ignorant and easily misled. A sin committed under compulsion, moreover, would be no sin, because sin always involves a free decision. YouCat 69
  • 20. How does God draw us out of the whirlpool of evil?  God does not just look on as man gradually destroys himself and he world around him through the chain reaction of sin. He sends us Jesus Christ, the Savior and Redeemer, who snatches us from the power of sin. YouCat 70
  • 21. What are the positive effects of confession?  Confession reconciles the sinner with God and the Church. YouCat 239
  • 22. What is a sin in the first place?  A sin is a word, deed, or intention by which man deliberately and voluntarily offends against the true order of things, as God’s loving providence has arranged them. YouCat 315
  • 23. How can we distinguish serious sins (mortal sins) from less serious (venial) sins ?  Serious sin destroys the divine power of love in a person’s heart, without which there can be no eternal beatitude. Hence it is also called mortal sin.  Serious sin breaks with God  Venial sin only strains the relationship with him. YouCat 316
  • 24. How can a person be delivered from serious sin and reunited with God? YouCat 317
  • 25. What are vices?  Vices are negative habits that deaden and dull the conscience, incline a person to evil, and habitually prepare him for sin.  Found in connection with the 7 capital sins: pride, lust, anger, gluttony, envy, covetou sness, sloth .  Acedia=spiritual boredom YouCat 318
  • 26.  Deep-seated disorder in our appetites and drives that is the root-cause of many of our personal sins; through God’s redeeming grace, we are strengthened to overcome this disorder within us  Our concupiscence shows itself in certain sources or roots of sin called the “seven capital sins” Concupiscence
  • 27.  Basic evil inclinations or disvalues which are the origin of many sinful thoughts, words, or deeds  They manifest the evil tendencies within each of us which are the effects of original sin. Seven Capital sins
  • 28. PRIDE: exalting oneself beyond what is due and true LUST: disordered desire for or inordinate enjoyment of sexual pleasure ANGER: destructive aggressiveness Seven Capital Sins
  • 29. GLUTTONY: excessive indulgence in food or drink ENVY: begrudging others their talents, success and wishing them evil COVETOUSNESS: desiring what to others, leading to dishonesty, stealing and injustice SLOTH: laziness and escape from exerting due effort Seven Capital Sins
  • 30. Is there a thing as structures of sin?  Structures of sin exist only in a manner of speaking. A sin is always connected with an individual person, who knowingly and willingly agrees to something evil. YouCat 320
  • 31. 1. I am better than all of you. 2. I love to eat even if I’m already full. 3. I give in to sexual desires by watching pornography and touching my classmates. 4. I hate doing homework. 5. I have very little patience with others. Identify the capital sin being described.
  • 32. 6. I wish my rich classmates ill fortune.  7. I buy things on impulse even when I don’t need them.  8. I hate doing household chores.  9. I smuggle sex videos in my computer.  10. I like to take the easy way out. Identify the capital sins described
