This document discusses actions that Black parents should take over the summer to help close the achievement gap between Black and white students. The author believes that a major contributor to the gap is that schools are closed over the summer, resulting in up to a 3 month learning loss each year. Middle-income parents enroll their children in academic programs, while some allow unstructured time that requires reviewing in the fall. The author urges Black parents to take their children to free libraries and museums, and to have them read one book per week and write a book report. These steps can help close the achievement gap and predict a student's future success.
