– demographics A generic term for the inclusionary and exclusionary crit
eria used when recruiting human subjects for a clinical trial.
• Patient demographics form the core of the data for any medical
institution.
• They allow for the identification of a patient and his categorization
into categories for the purpose of statistical analysis.
• Each piece of information is important because correct and quality
entry of such information will directly impact physician’s monthly
revenue. This is the key to obtaining accurate information which is
required for claim submission.
• HIPAA states: Protected Health Information (PHI) is any individually
identifiable information contained in an electronic or paper medical
record. PHI includes a patient's mental or physical health condition
as well as a patient's billing and demographic information. All PHI
must be used and maintained in a secure fashion.

• Inaccurate demographic information may adversely affect the
quality of an individual’s healthcare, insurance, and employability.
• Healthcare app’s will have to adhere to HIPAA’s security rule whic
were developed for two primary purposes.
– First, the implementation of appropriate security safeguards protects certain
electronic protected health care information (e-PHI) that may be at risk.
– Second, protecting an individual’s health information, while permitting the
appropriate access and use of that information, ultimately promotes the use
of e-PHI in the industry – an important goal of HIPAA.
• The Security Rule requires appropriate administrative, physical and
technical safeguards to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and
security of electronic protected health information.
