# Western Art Survey II: Research Paper
● Choose a work of art from our class created after 1350 C.E.
for research. Your research
paper should discuss the total components of the work of art
which include:
• History of the subject
• Formal analysis of the chosen work of art
• Discussion of the content/meaning
Paragraph 1: DESCRIPTION
• What do you see?
• Identify: (Title, Artist, Date created, size, Medium, location,
and genre.)
• Describe what You see in the work of art (large stones, small
humans, abstract animals,
Gods and Goddesses, murals depicting acts of leisure, etc.)
• You must include the Artist, title, and medium of the work of
art.
Paragraph 2: HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
• What time period was the work created?
• What stylistic trends were popular during this time period?
• Is there an artist attributed to this work?
• Were there any social, political or cultural influences on this
work of art?
Paragraph 3: FORMAL ANALYSIS
• How is the work of art, organized, and constructed?
• A good suggestion is to think about some of the “principles”
of Art and Design: Week 2
Module
• Art-Line, Shape, Space, Color, Texture, Value, and Form
• Design–Balance, Emphasis, Contrast, Rhythm, Pattern,
Movement, Variety, Harmony,
Proportion, and Unity
Paragraph 4: INTERPRETATION
• How does the work make you feel?
• What is the artist saying?
• What do you think the artist is trying to communicate to you
as a viewer?
Paragraph 5: JUDGEMENT or EVALUATION
• Is the work successful? Why or why not?
• What do you like or dislike about the artwork?
• Does the work have a specific meaning or purpose?
Paragraph 6: CONCLUSION
• Restate key points
• Summarize key points
