West Virginia is known as the Mountain State. It has a population of over 1.8 million people and its capital is Charleston. The state has a diverse geography that includes mountains, rivers, and lakes. Major industries include mining, manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism centered around skiing and historical sites. Some notable places in West Virginia include Snowshoe Mountain Resort, Harpers Ferry historic town, and Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park.

- 13. West Virginia was a special place for me to research because I have been there before and I enjoyed my visit. I learned there are a lot of historical landmarks in the state related to the American Civil War. I think it is a great state because it has historical landmarks that can teach you things about the past and it has fun entertainment like Snowshoe and Silver Creek ski areas.

- My state is West Virginia. It is called the Mountain State because it is made up of some of the most of rugged land in the country. The state motto is “ Montani Semper Liberi ” which translates to Maintaineers Are Always Free. The motto was adopted by the state of West Virginia as part of the state constitution that was signed in 1863. The phrase was suggested as the motto by Joseph H. Diss Debar, the artist who created the state's Great Seal.
- West Virginia is part of the Appalachian Region in the eastern part of the United States. The land areas are characterized by the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region, and the Appalachian Plateau. The Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region is part of the Appalachian Mountain Range. The Allagheny and Blue Ridge Mountains Ranges run diagonally across the eastern part of the state. The mountains have parallel ridges where streams run through the valleys between them. Much of this area is covered by forests and has many caves and underground streams. The Appalachian Plateau is west of the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region. The area covers 5/6 ths of the state and is very rugged. It is different in that it has more rounded hills and flat-topped highlands. West Virginia is bordered by Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Kentucky and Ohio.

- West Virginia’s most valuable manufactured products include chemicals. This includes things like adhesives, pharmaceuticals, and plastics. Other manufacturing products include metals such as sheet steel, structural steel and aluminum. The state also produces lumber. The states top mining product is coal. Other mining products include natural gas, oil crushed stone, salt, sand and gravel.
- Agriculture is also an important industry in West Virginia. 82% of the agricultural production is livestock products. The top two livestock products include broilers (young chickens) and beef cattle. Other products include chicken eggs, dairy products, turkeys, sheep, hogs, farm chickens, honey, farmed raised fish and wool.
- 18% of West Virginia’s agricultural production is crops. Hay is the number one crop and it is used to feed livestock. It makes up 2% of all crops grown in the state. Other crops include apples, corn for grains, soybeans, tobacco, peaches and wheat.
- Showshoe is one of the most popular tourist attractions in West Virginia. It is a resort in the Allegheny Mountains for skiing, snow tubing and mountain biking. It comprises both Snowshoe and Silver Creek Ski area. Snowshoe is positioned where Cheat Mountain and Back Allegheny Mountain come together. The second highest point in the state, Thorny Flat on Cheat Mountain is located there. The elevation is 4,848 feet. More than 480,000 people visit the resort each year. It has 60 slopes and trails. Covering 11,000 acres, 244 acres are considered skiable terrain. Each year it receives about 180 inches of snow.
