The world’s longest-lived people aren’t big on working out, but they do move each day: walking, gardening and working outdoors.
Knowing “why I wake up in the morning” is worth up to seven years of extra life expectancy.
Whether it’s prayer, napping or happy hour, those who live longest have routines to help them shed stress.
Stop eating when you’re 80 percent full – it can be the difference between losing weight or gaining it
Beans, including fava, black, soy and lentils, are the cornerstone of most centenarian diets
Moderate drinkers outlive non-drinkers. The trick is to drink 1-2 glasses per day with friends and/or with food.
There are five basic steps in tasting wine: color, swirl, smell, taste, and savor
The Emperor's daughter said to Rabbi Yehoshua ben Chananiah: "What beautiful Torah in an ugly vessel." He replied, "Learn from the house of your father. In what is the wine stored?" "In jars of clay," she answered. "But all the common people store their wine in jars of clay! You use them too? You should keep your wine in jars of gold and silver!" She went and had the wine placed in vessels of gold and silver, and it turned sour. "Thus," said he to her, "It is the same with Torah!" She asked, "But are there not handsome people who are learned?" He replied, "If they were ugly they would be even more learned!"
Research shows that attending faith-based services four times per month will add 4-14 years of life expectancy
Successful centenarians usually commit to a life partner (which can add up to 3 years of life expectancy) and invest in their children with time and love
The world’s longest lived people chose–or were born into–social circles that supported healthy behaviors, Okinawans created ”moais”–groups of five friends that committed to each other for life. Research from the Framingham Studies shows that smoking, obesity, happiness, and even loneliness are contagious. So the social networks of long-lived people have favorably shaped their health behaviors.
