This week's discussion focuses on establishing relationships with families. The instructor asks students where they would like to visit and shares her interest in visiting the Taj Mahal in India. NAEYC's core values of ethical behavior are presented, emphasizing respecting children and families. Two scenarios involving potential ethical issues between teachers and parents are discussed, with questions about how to address situations respecting ethical principles and responsibilities to children, families, colleagues and society. The importance of establishing communication and building relationships with parents through respecting their child-rearing techniques is emphasized.

Center based child misses out parent child interaction
Center based child misses out parent child interaction.
Children are placed in child care centers due to different circumstances one of them being work pressure for both parents. The other reason is that the child might be an orphan. In some circumstances professionals such as paediatricians advice parents to take their children to child centers so that they can be given good care by people who are qualified to handle children affairs. Children with special needs who attend child care centers at an early age miss out important learning that occurs in parental child interaction. One might question how a child who goes to daycare behavior might be different compared to a child that stays at home with parents. Depending on various circumstances, a child who attends daycare may be better prepared than kids who stay home exclusively with their parents. Judith Katz, an administrator from Minee Subee Early Education and Childcare centers says “While an ordinary daycare may watch over your child with safety in mind until pickup, an extraordinary daycare center may dedicate themselves to helping prepare your child for the future.”
To start with, entrusting children to someone else's care, even for just part of the day, can be troubling for most parents. This leads to a weaker bond between mother and child, particular in the infant and toddler stage. The American Academy of Pediatrics warns that illness often spreads easily when children congregate together in venues such as daycare and school. Frequent and thorough hand washing with antibacterial soap serves as a means of reducing the spread of illness in the home. This alone proves that the children are always at risk of getting infections.
Parent and family characteristics are more strongly linked to child development than were child care center’s features. The child’s outcome is better when the mother is responsive, sensitive, and attentive and provide good stimulation to their child. Families with organized routines, books, play materials and engaged in outings and library trips have their children have good social and cognitive outcomes. In child care centers, most of these services may not be given to the child. Most child care Centre provide warm, supportive environment that protect the child’s health and safety but do not provide care giving which promotes and stimulates development. Parents value both compliance and social skills more than caretaker. This kind of personal attachment makes the child feel valued and important which stimulates child’s development. This personal touch provided by the parent is not given to the children in child care Centre. Where parent is mostly involved in child growth, child’s developing sense of independence, self-concept and self-esteem is supported. Parents usually make their children feel needed since they keep on seeking assistance from th ...

Child Education
Education for young children is very important yet it is often not given enough attention. We are all born naïve and innocent without knowing anything. Young children are barely aware of who they are. According to Ahmad, the learning process begins at early ages just as growth and development begin. As such, teaching and learning is an essential aspect of a child's developmental stages. The growth and development process of a child can be guided through the process of teaching and learning. At very young ages, children are very eager to learn and understand various aspects of their surrounding environment. The learning process advances to include other factors as a child grows. For this reason, it is important to understand a child's learning process and create the most accommodative learning environment. More so, identifying teaching practices that promote a child's learning process is crucial to their growth and development from an early age.
Teaching refers to the process of facilitating, in this case, children to acquire new knowledge and understand themselves as well as their surrounding environment. Different approaches of teaching are adopted for various groups of people. As such, the type of approach adopted for early childhood education is different from approaches used with other groups of people. Children are very brittle at a young age, therefore, they must be handled with care. A small error made when teaching a child can have long-lasting effects, (Bullard, 10). The main purpose of teaching practices among infants is to facilitate them into becoming who they are naturally meant to be. Teaching in early childhood education is based on observations made on the infants. The main role of a teacher at this stage is to encourage good behavior and discourage bad habits. Therefore, teaching in children's education involves more nurturing practices rather than inculcating new knowledge and skills among infants.
On the other hand, learning refers to the process through which young children acquire knowledge and develop awareness about their surroundings. This process involves various ways through which children can understand the guidance and teachings of their educators. As such, the learning process is dependent on the cognitive abilities of individual children. Some children are fast-learners while others are slow learners. “Early childhood education and care (ECEC) has been recognized as a fundamental step in children’s development as it lays the foundation for future growth and learning,” (Bullard, 11). Learning is a gradual process that starts at a slow pace and increases speed as the child grows. Children should be facilitated to learn one thing at a time rather than subjecting them to an environment that overwhelms their abilities. It is also important to understand that the learning process for infants manifests through their childish play and chi.

3. Getting to know you, getting to know all about you… This week, I would like to know where is the one place on earth that you wish you could visit during your life time? I would love to go to New Delhi and see the Taj Mahal!
4. NAEYC’s Core Valuesof Ethical Behavior* Appreciating childhood as a unique and valuable stage of the human life cycle Basing our work with children on knowledge of child development Appreciating and supporting the close ties between the child and family Recognizing that children are best understood and supported in the context of family, culture, community, and society Respecting the dignity, worth, and uniqueness of each individual (child, family member, and colleague) Helping children and adults achieve their full potential in the context of relationships that are based on trust, respect, and positive regard *Retrieved on 10/07-2007 from http://www.naeyc.org/about/positions/PSETH98.asp
5. Real Life Application Situation 1 “Mrs. Cantelli had requested a conference with her daughter’s teacher, Mrs. Carter, to discuss the reading curriculum. “I know that it doesn’t hurt to expose children to reading and writing,” she said, “but I don’t think you should be teaching phonics to preschoolers. Do you really think these children are ready to learn phonics?” Mrs. Carter didn’t know how to respond. She felt that Mrs. Cantelli was right, but the director of the school made it quite clear that everyone had to teach phonics. ” (Segal ,et al., 2006, 329). In Situation 3, we have a conference with Mrs. Cantelli and her daughter's teacher Mrs. Carter. Was there a violation of ethical principal in this scenario? Explain. If you were the teacher, what would be your reaction to the student's parent? Would you address this with the director of the school? Why or why not?
6. Real Life Application Situation 2 “Cuddle care is the only licensed child care facility available in the camp of migrant workers. That means that during harvesting, Cuddle Care is often overenrolled. The director realized that is she does not take the children into her center, many of the infants might be left in the care of their young brothers and sisters. She’s also worried about losing her license. When someone from the health department arrived unexpectedly one day, the director was afraid that she might be shut down for overcrowding. She asked one of the teachers to take 10 of the children on a walk so the health department wouldn’t find out how many children were in the center. The teacher was not sure whether she should follow the director’s instructions, but she did” (Segal, et al., 2006, 329). This involves the director of Cuddle Care, a licensed child care facility for migrant workers' children and a teacher at Cuddle Care. Can you recognize a violation of ethical principal in this scenario? Why or why not? What would be your reaction if you were the teacher?
7. Principles of Ethical Practice We always maintain the confidentiality of the parents and our co-workers. We are honest, dependable, and reliable We are truthful with children, parents, and our co-workers We treat all families with respect We treat each child as an individual
8. What are our ethical responsibilities: To children? To families? To our colleagues? To the community and society?
9. NAEYC’s Competency Goals They are: To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment To advance physical and intellectual competence To support social and emotional development and provide positive guidance To establish positive and productive relationships with families To ensure a well-run, purposeful program responsive to participant needs To maintain a commitment to professionalism
10. Competency Goal IV To establish positive and productive relationships with families. How can we as ECPs establish communication with parents?
11. Building relationships! Why is it essential to establish a good rapport with the parents of the children you watch?
12. Parents are the main teacher! As ECPs, it is essential that we respect the child-rearing techniques of our parents. In order to respect cultural differences in parenting, we need to focus our help on areas the parents want information about.
13. Any Questions? We will not meet on the 11th since it is Columbus Day and fall break!
