3. The United States and
South Korea failed to
revive a stalled free trade
agreement on Thursday,
dealing a blow to both
countries' leaders and
putting a brake on
bilateral trade.
US President Barack
Obama and South Korea's
Lee Myung-bak said
negotiators would continue
talks to address US
concerns that the deal
does not do enough to
open South Korean
markets to US beef and
autos.
"We agreed that more time
is needed to resolve
detailed issues and asked
trade ministers to reach a
mutually acceptable deal
as soon as possible," Lee
told told a joint news
conference with Obama on
the sidelines of a G20
summit.
4. 141 American
banks have gone
belly up
surpassing the
total count of
bank failures in
2009.
The world's
largest economy
saw the collapse
of 140 banks
last year, at a
time when the
country exited
one of the worst
recessions.
Four banks --
Western
Commercial
Bank, Pierce
Commercial
Bank, First
Vietnamese
American Bank
and K Bank --
were shut down
by the
authorities on
November 5.
According to
the Federal
Deposit
Insurance
Corporation ,
which insures
deposits at
over 8,000
American
banks, the
latest failures
would cost
more than
$254 million.
5. South Korean
steel giant
POSCO ,
embroiled in
environment
issues over its
plant in Orissa,
today announced
setting up of a
USD 1.4 billion
plan in Korea.
The company said
it would invest 1.6
trillion won in the
plant at
Gwangyang city on
the south coast,
with production
capacity of 3.3
million tonnes a
year of hot-rolled
coil steel by
January 2014.
It will also
build a plant in
the western
Indian state of
Maharashtra by
December 2013
with a 1.8
million-tonne-
a-year capacity
for cold-rolled
coil.
When the
Gwangyang plant
is completed,
POSCO's annual
output capacity
will rise to 26.84
million tonnes a
year of hot-rolled
coil, from 23.54
million.
