Recall that the previous chapter examined words,
more specifically morphemes, and the ways they come
together to form larger and complex words.
‘Syntax’ examines the ways words come together to form
phrases and consequently sentences. Many definitions can be
offered for syntax.
The following is a routine one:
Syntax is the study of how words are combined to produce
phrases and sentences.
When syntax is
combined with
morphology, the
resulting area is
called ‘grammar’.
