Jesus resolutely sets his face toward Jerusalem, prepared to submit to God's will and die for the salvation of humanity. Though he was frightened of what was to come, both physically and spiritually, Jesus displayed great bravery in the face of death. He was tried through an illegal trial held at night by the Sadducee-led temple priests who wanted to secure his execution from Pilate. After the crucifixion, the women who followed Jesus cared for his body, with Mary at first mistaking him for the gardener, recalling the garden of Eden. Jesus' resurrected body could be touched and he ate food, foreshadowing the eternal resurrected bodies believers will receive.

The second miracle was in Capernaum, where Jesus healed a man possessed by a demon in the synagogue by commanding the demon to leave the man, which it did with a shriek. News of this miracle spread throughout Galilee.

Week 1
This document outlines the overarching narrative of the Bible from creation to new creation. It begins with God creating humanity and commissioning Adam and Eve with a mission. After their fall, God establishes his plan to redeem humanity through Abraham and his descendants, forming the nation of Israel. However, Israel fails in its mission to be a light to the nations. The story ends with God making all things new in the new heavens and new earth, fulfilling his original purpose for creation.

The Meaning of Easter

The trials fulfilled prophecies of Jesus' suffering and death. Jesus remained silent before Herod and Pilate declared him innocent twice based on both secular and religious verdicts.

Week 5
- 1. The Historical Jesus Week 5 Christ: God. Creator. Man. Prophet. Savior. King.
- 3. Luke 9:51 states, “As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” Other translations read He “…set His face to Jerusalem.” It is a strong statement about Jesus’ submission to His Father’s will to die on behalf of all those who would place their faith in Him (2 Cor. 5:21).
- 4. We often speak of Jesus’ compassion but we do not speak enough about His bravery. He was facing both physical and spiritual hell on earth but He “set His face” to do it. He was still human, so He was frightened (Matt. 26:39) but He was still submissive.
- 6. Jesus celebrates the Passover with His disciples but He likely did it before the official Passover celebration. Why? It is important to remember that Christians continue to practice a form of the Passover when they partake in the Lord’s Supper.
- 8. Jesus is tried but His trial was illegal. Under Jewish law, it should have been held during the day and only witnesses were to be questioned (John 18:19-23). Why did the Temple priests do it? Remember who the Sadducees were and then see John 18:14.
- 9. They take Jesus to Pilate to secure an order of execution (see John 18:28-40). They did not enter because Gentile dwellings were rumored to house the corpses of aborted babies, which was abhorrent to Jews.
- 10. Pilate asks what Jesus did wrong. He responds, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.” The problem is that the Greek may also be translated “My Kingdom is not FROM this world.”
- 11. The people who had welcomed Jesus now cry for His execution. Why? He did not give them the military leadership they desired!
- 12. The brutality of the crucifixion will take up a separate handout (stay tuned).
- 13. After Passover, the women risk uncleanliness to care for the body of Jesus. Mary finds Him and assumes He is the gardener…do you get the symbolism? Think Genesis 2!
- 14. Jesus’ body is an eternal physical one (He can be touched, He eats, etc.) We are promised a similar existence (see Phil. 3:20-21 and 1 John 3:2)!
