3. Introduction
The city is falling apart at the seams! BoxTown
needs our help to make the city safe for everyone
who lives there. As a team of engineers, you have to
help save BoxTown and its citizens!
How will you do this???
4. Task
BoxTown is in danger of collapsing! Our job as a team is to
identify the issues with BoxTown (addressed in the
introduction), and then organize our thoughts into a plan of
action. In small groups, you will investigate ways to
implement your plan, and construct your own BoxTown with
updates to the buildings, transportation, water supplies,
streets, and more. Once your town is built, each of you will
create a map of your town! Using your prior –and new–
knowledge (and provided resources) of environments,
directions, and safety, design your map to be one that
anyone could follow safely through your new BoxTown!
5. Process
Your team has decided to rescue BoxTown! With your
teammates, use the resources provided to create a new
BoxTown. Start with a blue print of your town, then
construct the town itself, then finish it off with a map to
your brand new town! While creating your town, remember
safety, transportation, and clean drinking water!

Something to reflect on while creating your town is clean
drinking water. Why is it important and how would you
accomplish clean water for BoxTown? Follow the next link to
read about how important clean drinking water is.

9. Evaluation
Students will be graded on the rubric shown on the previous
slide. Categories such as collaboration, time-management,
and preparedness will play a role in the students’ final
grade.
10. Conclusion
Think about the project that you just completed. You had to
work as a team to improve a town. Together, you had to
create the blue prints, study safety and clean drinking water
importance, build a new town, and create a map around
your new BoxTown.
Answer the following question based on information
gathered from the project and resources.
11. Pop Quiz!
1. Do you think that the sites provided could have been
more helped? Were they difficult or easy to use?
2. You now have basic understanding of directions and how
to make a map. Do you think that you could navigate
your way through your own town now?

Geography In order for students to understand that geography influences the
development of a region as well as the interactions between people and the
environment, the geography content standards have been structured to be taught as an
independent unit. Students will then utilize their geographic content knowledge and
apply the skills within their study of the continents. *
3.3 Use cardinal directions, map scales, legends, titles, and longitude and latitude to
locate major cities and countries in the world. *
3.13 Summarize how people interact with their environment to satisfy basic needs and
how geographic challenges are resolved, including housing, industry, transportation,
communication, bridges, dams, tunnels, canals, freshwater supply, irrigation systems,
and landfills. *
*Information gathered from
http://tn.gov/assets/entities/education/attachments/std_ss_gr_3.pdf
Standard 3.3 will be simplified (for this project) to their local areas and their
constructed BoxTowns.
13. Learning Objective
The learner will investigate ways to improve a community and its basic needs
provided.
The learner will understand cardinal directions, basic blueprint and mapping
computer skills.
The learner will utilize resources around them to solve problems and create
solutions.
