This web quest teaches students about life in mid-19th century California by having them work together to barter and trade for ingredients to bake a cake. Students will make a list of ingredients for the type of cake they choose, research the costs in 1850s currency, and find alternative payment methods like bartering. They will then plan how to cook the cake over a fire without modern appliances. The teacher will evaluate students on their creativity in obtaining supplies with limited money and use of credible sources. The goal is for students to learn practical skills and history through a hands-on baking activity.

7) Once you have gotten all your ingredients, you need to research how cooking was done
back then. This is before there were ovens, mixers or stoves.
