Editor's Notes

  1. Entre Cielos will now start into the 2nd High Season 2012/2013. We are here today to introduce you to the great time of Harvest here in Mendoza.
  2. Argentina is currently the world's fifth largest wine producer by volume – after France, Italy, Spain and the USA in that order – a position it has held for many years. Yet it is only very recently - perhaps over the last ten or fifteen years - that the industry has really begun to develop the methods, attitudes and will to become a serious player in the international wine market. High volume, low quality vines are being replaced by premium varieties. Formerly struggling bodegas are attracting the backing of major international wine companies. Product quality is soaring, and every year the industry balance shifts further from cheap table wines towards exquisitely crafted drops that are increasingly recognized as being amongst the best in the world. The Argentine wine industry is reaping the benefits of its heritage - old vines, unique geographical conditions - with new technology and a mix of modern and traditional methods. It's come along way since the first vines were planted in Mendoza more than 400 years ago. This makes visiting Argentina, and specifically Mendoza, an incredible treat for travelers during our Harvest Season.
  3. Although each year varies slightly depending on the conditions, individual vineyard management, style of wine desired and locations of the vineyards, Mendoza’s steady climate means that harvest times are reasonably similar across the region. The harvest in the Mendoza region generally runs from late February through to April. Exactly when it starts depends on a number of factors: systems used in the vineyard such as high trellises or hail protection which may slow ripening, climate conditions (some years, fearful of late summer hailstorms, many growers rush their harvest in earlier than would otherwise be ideal), and the winemaker's judgment. The first wines to be harvested are the sparkling wine varieties, followed by white wine varieties, in mid February. In March some red varietals such as Mendoza’s emblematic Malbec are harvested and later ripening grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are usually harvested in April.
  4. This is without a doubt the most interesting time to visit Mendoza’s thousand wineries as they are all full of life with the harvest and you can really get a clear understanding of the labor of love that goes into a good wine. Once the harvest starts, all grapes need to be in within 6 to 8 weeks, usually starting with the white varieties if present. As a very rough guide, some indication of relative position in the harvest is given in each grape's profile. Harvest is a major logistical operation for vineyards, requiring coordination of pickers, transport, quality control, and virtually constant operation of the winery process from the very first day. Fruit has to be fed into the winery process at just the right rate to allow the winery to handle it. A poorly planned or executed harvest which results in fruit backing up, sitting in crates waiting to be de-stemmed, crushed and so on, would seriously affect the final quality of the winery's wines. The area is best known for its reds although it does produce quite a bit of Torontes and Chardonay. Some of the most important reds grown in the region are: Bonarda, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Sangiovese, Syrah, Tempranillo
  5. There is no doubt that Malbec is the grape on which Argentina's international reputation as a wine producing nation is founded. It is a difficult grape to which the climate and conditions around Mendoza are arguably ideally suited. It is also a grape which no other country in the world cultivates to anything like the same degree - and certainly not for production of single grape varietal wines.
  6. Our project started with the desire to produce our own wine. It was also the first thing we did. In 2009, we arrived in August, prepared the soil, leveled the ground and planted our 20,000 Malbec plants, our first crop in November 2009. Specifically for Entre Cielos, we were drawn to the area not only because of its beauty but also because of the wines of Mendoza.
  7. The Rose is the first collection of our 3 years old plants of our own vineyard. The Malbec 2010 is our first Malbec wine, with purchased grapes from other local vineyards. The vines that we have are; the young line, Marantal Joven, the classic line, Marantal classico,Gran Marantal, Our Premium line is made with our Malbec and Pinot Noir, which are aged in oak barrels. So far, we have planted year old plants in 2009, collected from 20,000 plants that gave us about 2500 Kg in April 2011. This allowed us to produce 1,300 bottles of Rosé. The harvest 2012 gave us 30,000 kg of malbec grapes, which will provided for some 17,000 bottles.
  8. Thats how the the vineyard looked like in May 2012... The view is there and is just beautiful.
  9. Wine bottle: 13. This is our private wine collection. The label symbolizes the feeling we had when we first stepped on this property. We arrived at night and looked up into the dark sky and were able to see the masses of stars and the Orion just above us. When we looked hard we came across a star called the Marantal, and from that came our wine‘s namesake.   That feeling is one we wish to share with our guests, not only in their experience in staying with us but also in our wines.
  10. One of the highlights of the Harvest Season is the Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia (The Grape Harvest Festival), which takes place annually in the city of Mendoza, Mendoza Province, Argentina. It is one of the most important festivals in the country attracting large numbers of tourists to the region. This world-renowned harvest festival started with humble beginnings in the late 1800s as a small celebration for the field workers after the long, hard work of harvest. Harvest was always a time in which the whole family and village would help pick the year's fruit and after a successful harvest they would hold a celebration as a thanks for nature's bounty. As the years passed, the festivities became more formalized and the different villages would each pick the most beautiful girl to be their Harvest Queen, crowning her with a ring of grapes. Village parades and carousels were added to the festival in 1913 and soon each harvest would also see theatre, song and dance performances as part of the celebration. In 1936 the villages came together to create one big harvest festival where they elected one Harvest Queen out of all the different districts, charged an entrance fee for the now rather spectacular show and held the first official Vendimia festival. As the prestige of the event and the number of visitors grew, a specially built amphitheater was built in 1963 to host the main show and Queen election. The event is now one of the most anticipated in Mendoza and Argentina's calendar, and it spans over three weeks in late February and early March with lots of different activities for locals and visitors alike to enjoy and join in on the celebrations.
  11. Although officially not part of the Vendimia, a large mega-winetasting heralds the beginning of the festivities and gets everyone in high spirits for the celebration. The Semana Federal is a week long party of folk dancing, music and food and wine drinking, where each Mendoza region presents their own local specialties and Harvest Queen. A tradition part of the festival is also the religious ceremony where a local priest blesses the year’s grapes. Parades are then held throughout the city where the Queens and local performers pass through the tree-lined streets of Mendoza city on decorated floats throwing grapes and fruit to the cheering crowds. The climax of the Vendimia festival is the election of a Harvest Queen and an extravagant three-day final show, which is an artistic interpretation through dance, performance, lights, costumes and music of the events and history of Mendoza's spectacular Vendimia. The Program of events for the festival goes as follows.   Benediction of the fruit The Benediction of the fruit takes place on the last Sunday of February. Each of the 18 departments in Mendoza Province prepare for the festival in the early months of the year. The main event occurs in the first week of March in Mendoza city featuring hundreds of dancers and performers, the selection of a "Reina Nacional de la Vendimia" (National Vendimia Queen) and a large firework display.
  12. Vía Blanca de las Reinas On the evening of the first Friday of March the prettiest women elected as Reinas (queens) from each department parade in alegoric chariots through the streets of Mendoza dressed in decorative outfits designed to celebrate the winemaking tradition and the character of their Departments. This event has been known to attract over 200,000 spectators.
  13. Carrusel Vendimial The Carrusel Vendimial takes place on the Saturday morning, it takes the form of a daylight parade, where the Reinas ride their chariots through the streets, accompanied formations of men dressed in Gaucho style outfits and riding horses, they are followed by dancers representing various provinces of Argentina and other Latin American Countries. 15. Coming to Mendoza during the excited buzz of harvest doesn't mean that you need to spend all your time focused on wine - Mendoza has a plethora of other appealing activities which are ripe to enjoy at this beautiful time of year.
  16. One of Mendoza's greatest natural resources is the enormous Andes mountain range within which there are dozens of outdoor activities you can take advantage of. The world famous Aconcagua mountain is the highest peak outside of the Himalayas, standing proud at a magnificent 6962 meters above sea level, and attracts avid climbers from all corners of the globe who come to try to make it to the top throughout the Summer season until the end of March. Although still a mighty challenge, it is one of the most accessible hiking expeditions (comparative to its height) in terms of difficulty, price and the relatively short 17 days it takes to complete. If you do not want to hike to the top of Aconcagua there is a wide variety of other interesting treks in the nearby and equally captivating Cordon del Plata mountain range. Visiting Aconcagua National Park can also be an enjoyable day trip from the city as a short stroll will give you jaw dropping views of the peak; an unparalleled, liberating feeling of being in the Andean wilderness; and refreshingly cool temperatures. Other nearby attractions include the unusual, natural petrified bridge formation of Puente del Inca and the Cristo Redentor de los Andes monument which marks the frontier with Chile.
  17. Closer to the city in the greener foothills of the Andes you can enjoy white water rafting, zip-lining, windsurfing, biking, kayaking, paragliding, rock climbing and horse riding. Or for a more indulgent and relaxing afternoon you can take it easy in the natural hot springs of Cacheuta.
  18. The balmy evenings in Mendoza are also an ideal opportunity to bathe in Argentine culture with lots of music and dance festivals organized for the same period. Late January, February and early March host the Andean Music Festival with traditional folk music played in outdoor venues across the city; a weekend of rock ‘n roll at Mendorock; two weeks of outdoor cinema screenings; a weekend of live jazz on the lake; and a dance festival with flamenco, folklore and Arabic dancing. Most of these are held outdoors in the leafy San Martin Park, so it is the perfect opportunity to bring a bottle of bubbly and enjoy a late night picnic.
  19. For a taste of the passion-fuelled Argentine tango you can join numerous outdoor and indoor classes and milongas (where the audience can participate) or watch a professional show with a glass of Malbec in the numerous theatre bars. Mendoza's art museums also come to life at this time of the year with special open evenings and art related events and concerts.
  20. Another aspect of Mendocinean life that you cannot miss out on is the fine gastronomy. At the heart of Argentine cuisine lies their world famous beef but Mendoza also boasts an array of sumptuous locally grown fruit, vegetables and nuts; award winning olive oils; and locally bred trout. Foodies can delight in gourmet restaurants in the evening and the ultimate Mendoza experience is a fabulous wine paired five course lunch overlooking the vineyards and mountains at one of the many high quality wineries.
