In 2013, the Wayne County Department of Commerce (WCDA) focused on marketing, workforce development, and business recruitment and retention. Some highlights included:
- The WCDA engaged in print and online advertising campaigns to promote the area. Social media following grew significantly.
- Wayne County was certified as North Carolina's first WorkReady Community, with over 12,000 Career Readiness Certificates awarded, representing 23.3% of the labor force.
- Business recruitment efforts led to 665 new jobs and $44.7 million in new investment. The unemployment rate dropped from 9% to 7%.
- The WCDA assisted with 17 business expansion/retention projects, addressing issues for

Johanna Morariu from Innovation Network gave a presentation on October 27, 2012 at the American Evaluation Association's annual conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The presentation was titled, "State of the Field: Updated, Longitudinal Findings about Nonprofit and Philanthropic Evaluation Practices and Capacities" and highlighted our State of Evaluation research.
Innovation Network's State of Evaluation project provides valuable insight to all those who work in and with the nonprofit sector. The project is designed to collect longitudinal data to document evaluation trends in the U.S. nonprofit sector, including how nonprofits staff evaluation, how evaluation is funded, why evaluation is undertaken, how evaluation results are used, and much more. The 2012 report marks the beginning of longitudinal data and analysis, drawing from the first iteration of the project in 2010.
