• -born on december 29, 1937 in Evergreen Park, Illinois.
• -grew up in a chicago suburb for a bit until he moved to Florida
in the mid 1940's
• -Originally planned on entering the army in 1959, spent 6
months in basic training
• -Started to work for is family friend who owned a garbage
collection company instead
3. Early Career
(Waste Management)
• -Within two years of working for his family friend he had bought
his own truck and started his own garbage collection business
• -by 1968 he had 40 trucks mainly from promoting local business
• -by 1972 he formed with another company in chicago to form
waste management
• -by taking WMI it public, in 1983 WMI acquires nearly 150 local
and regional disposal services making it the largest disposal
company in the US
4. Blockbuster Video
• -opened in 1987, went public in 1989, same as WMI
• -Blockbuster Before going public: 7 million dollar business with
19 stores across the country
• -Blockbuster after going public: 4 billion dollar enterprise with
more than 3,700 stores across 11 countries
• - became US' largest movie rental chain in 1994
5. AutoNation
• -opened in 1996
• -now has over 370 dealerships
• -first auto dealership to go public
6. Other Investments…
• -Hotel Chain, "Extended Stay in America", sold in 2004, with
over 500 hotels across the US
• -in 1990 purchased 15% of the Miami Dolphins
• -purchased luxury yacht in 2004 for 77 million dollars
7. Wayne’s Keys to success
• -first person to build three fortune 500 companies from scratch
• -this is from going public
• -stuck with mainstream businesses that he knew people would
need
• -didn't take no for an answer (used questionable tactics to gain
business)
