Waterproofing basics 1 - Basics PPT.pptx
1.
2. • Even with continuing technological advances in building materials,
water continues to create unnecessary problems in completed
construction products. This is most often due to an envelope’s
inability to act as an integrated system that prevents water and
pollutant infiltration. All too often several systems are designed into
a building that have been chosen independently and are acting
independently rather than cohesively.
• Detailing transitions from one component to another or
terminations into structural components are often overlooked.
Product substitutions that do not act integrally with other specified
systems create problems and leakage. Inadequate attention to
movement characteristic of a structure can cause stress to in-place
systems that they are not able to withstand. All these situations
acting separately or in combination will eventually cause water
intrusion.
3. Waterproofing
• Waterproofing is defined as treatment of
surface or structure to prevent the passage of
water under the hydrostatic pressure.
4. Damp proofing
• Damp proofing is the treatment of the
surface to retard the absorption of moisture
in the absence of hydrostatic pressure.
6. Types of Waterproofing Systems
• Integral Waterproofing
• Positive Side Waterproofing
• Negative Side Waterproofing
• Blind Side Waterproofing

8. Integral Waterproofing
• Adding poly carboxylic, Naphthalene, sulphonate
based integral waterproofing compounds in
concrete & mortars.
• Adding Crystalline admixes in concrete.
• Grouting the structure with plasticized expanding
admixture grout.

Editor's Notes
Concrete is permeable and porous, because of that water penetrates in to the concrete and rises due to capillary action.
Positive side waterproofing includes surfaces like: Split slabs, bathrooms, Kitchens, planters, Fountains, Podium, Tunels, Parking decks, Roofs, Bridge decks, Balconies, Podium.
Negative sides: Elevator pits, retrofits, Damp areas, remedial work
Blind side: Soil Retention systems, Retaining wall, cuts & cover tunnels, under slab, underpinning.
Brick bat coba and mud phuska only provides slope. If cracks got formed and water penetrates in to it , it becomes very difficult to detect the path of the water.
Cement punning, Tar, China Mosaic Tiles do not have elastomeric properties and may break easily.
Bentonite get swell when comes in contact with water, these are mainly sodium based bentonites.
Crystalline gets penetrated in to the concrete and forms crystals whenever comes in contact with water. Best for admixing.
