The Rotary Club of Luanshya drilled a deep water well and installed a durable hand pump to provide clean water for a school in Zambia that previously had only a polluted well. The project aims to expand to provide water, sanitation facilities and hygiene training to additional schools in the region. The Rotary Club of Booragoon is seeking support from other clubs in District 9465 to help fund a matching grant project that would drill wells, build toilets and train communities at 3 schools for $10,000 per school. Participating clubs would support the Rotary Foundation and international service while improving access to water and sanitation.

At every local basic school, we can find a
solution for rural community’s most basic
needs - WATER.
At the same time CHILDREN can:
• collect clean water at school;
• attend classes instead of walking miles to
collect water;
• avoid predators who do them harm.

• BUILD 3 TOILETS
• and train the community in maintenance and
hygiene...
• for just $10,000 per school.

• We can create projects that provide water
and sanitation for 3, 5 or even 10 schools!

• An aid agency estimates the cost of JUST the
well at $12,000-$15,000!
• How can we do a well PLUS 3 toilets for only
$10,000?

• Our labour is free and we find companies
that have the people at heart who reduce
their overhead costs to make this solution
readily available.

8. However, water alone is only half the job...
Safe and clean sanitation facilities are essential to a child’s
health and development.
In many schools toilet facilities are poor, or even dangerous. At
each of our school well projects we also construct 3 toilets - one
for girls, boys and teachers.

• Make a difference in the world
• Have an impact on the lives of thousands of people in
a developing community
• Support the Rotary Foundation by participating in a
matching grant project
• Perform International Service which achieves many of
the goals of RI President Changemaker Award
– Participate in The Rotary Foundation’s educational and humanitarian
service programs (Matching grant)
– Find a Rotary club partner in another country and conduct an
international service project as either the project host or sponsor.

10. Sharing an opportunity. Why?
• Matching grant projects tend to be high value and beyond the
resources especially of clubs which are small or do not have
substantial resources.
• Knowledge of how Rotary Foundation Matching grants work, how
to apply and succeed is not always available in our clubs.
• Finding a suitable project and a suitable partner is not always a
simple process.
• Our club is not able to do this alone
The greatest outcome will be the support we provide to thousands of
people in communities surrounding the three schools.
Many of us have met past Ambassadorial Scholar, Aaron Chinyemba,
and he remains a member of our community and Rotary alumni.
Through this project we can support his community to and
strengthen the results of the hardships he has faced whilst
improving himself for the future benefit of that community.

11. How will your club benefit?
• Matching Grant application is pre-approved and ready for
submission
• Help other clubs in our District participate in International Service
and Rotary Foundation Matching Grant project. (many clubs would
not be able to do by themselves)
• Ready made business plan available for you to use.
• Copy of the matching grant application which may have value as an
example for future use
• Sharing the knowledge gained in preparing the application.
We have found a very capable matching grant partner in the Rotary
Club of Luanshya. They competed US$210,000 in matching grant
projects in the previous Rotary year.
Our project with them to provide science kits for 40 schools with a project value of
US$32,270 (Booragoon contribution US$17,514) is progressing well through this
partnership.
