They debated measures the EU is taking to help developing countries, such as ensuring access to education and healthcare. The students signed a petition to send children to school and organized campaigns to support victims in Nepal and raise awareness of issues facing women and girls in other parts of the world. They also met with MEPs to discuss the European Year for Development and how to engage citizens in development policy.
The Knights of Malta were granted control of Malta by the emperor in 1530 in exchange for tribute. They successfully defended Malta from the Ottomans in 1565, crippling the Turkish navy. After their victory, the Knights constructed their new capital of Valletta and built new defenses and a large hospital. The hospital was innovative for its high standards of hygiene and care for patients. Today, the Knights of Malta continue their historical mission of hospital work through various relief efforts worldwide.
