2. •The nonprofit organization 826 National has eight writing and tutoring
centers in major cities around the country. The centers teach students
ages 6-18 how to improve their writing skills and explore their creative side.
All of the centers operate largely through the assistance of volunteers, who
are an integral part of every 826 initiative. After individuals sign up as
volunteers, they receive hands-on training with an experienced mentor in
their specific area of interest.
3. •Volunteers can engage with students in the program on a number of
levels. Many serve as tutors and help the students to complete homework
assignments and stay on track with their academic work. Other volunteers
assist students with writing projects by teaching them how to find
inspiration, edit their work, and more. The program also needs volunteers
to teach English as a second language or to lead class discussions and
field trips. Furthermore, several college admissions directors work with
volunteers to show them what they expect from application essays so that
the volunteers can, in turn, offer guidance to students.
