IS YOUR CHILD TOO SICK FOR SCHOOL?
Is it viral or bacterial? Both viral and bacterial infections are
contagious and it's important to know when to keep kids home.
What's the difference? For viruses we treat symptoms, whereas
bacterial infections are typically resolved with an antibiotic.
VIRAL INFECTION
EXAMPLE: COLD
Sore throat, runny nose and sinus
congestion for 3-5 days. Often
accompanied by a cough that lasts
several weeks.
EXAMPLE: FLU
Sore throat, fever, headache,
overall muscle, aches and fatigue
for 7-10 days. Sometimes includes
vomiting and/or diarrhea, and in
severe cases pneumonia in the
elderly. Often accompanied by a
cough that lasts several weeks.
BACTERIAL INFECTION
EXAMPLE: PINK EYE
Eye appears pink in color, increased
tearing, discharge, crusting of lids.
EXAMPLE: STREP THROAT
Pain in throat, pain or difficulty with
swallowing; swollen lymph nodes in
the neck, and often fever.
EXAMPLE: EAR INFECTION
Ear pain especially when lying
down, tugging on the ear, difficulty
sleeping, irritability, drainage from
the ear, and fever.
If your child has any of these symptoms please consider keeping
them out of school a minimum of 1 day after symptoms subside.
Putting them in school any sooner puts their classmates at great
risk and also increases the time it takes for your child to recover:
