The Supreme Court of India dismissed a writ petition seeking directions for the expeditious disposal of a criminal appeal pending in the High Court. The petitioner had been in jail for 21 years without remission while awaiting the outcome of the appeal. The Supreme Court gave the petitioner liberty to file a fresh bail application in the pending criminal appeal before the High Court. The Court observed that if a bail application is filed, the High Court shall consider it forthwith. The Court expected the High Court to decide any bail application within one month of filing.
