Enhancing and explaining search strategies, citing referencesjgdaams
This document outlines steps for enhancing medical literature searches and summarizing search strategies. It discusses:
1) Formulating a searchable question using PICO(S) criteria.
2) Exploring eligible information sources beyond Google Scholar, such as bibliographic databases.
3) Expanding searches using systematic techniques like conceptual and operational search strategies.
4) Analyzing results with tools like Carrot2 and GOPubMed to identify key concepts and references.
5) Validating search results against a set of "spot on" references found separately.
The document emphasizes documenting search strategies for transparency and using reference management software.

Verslag EBLIP6 Conference,
Manchester
27 – 29 juni 2011
Joost Daams
programma mij nieuwsgierig.
Wat is EBLIP? Wat is een meta-synthese?
Inhoud in chronologische volgorde:
Wat is EBLIP6 en welke methoden worden gehanteerd? (pre-conference workshops
2. Dia 2
27 juni: pre-conference
workshop 1
Andrew Booth –
Introduction to EBLIP
3. Dia 3
EBLIP is…
“Evidence Based Library and Information Practice (EBLIP)
seeks to improve library and information services and
practice by bringing together the best available evidence and
insights derived from working experience, moderated by user
needs and preferences.” (Andrew Booth)
Het vakblad bij uitstek is EBLIP Journal
… met Evidence Summaries, en
Commentaar
verschillen.
Evidence Based Library and Information Practice is ook een OA peer reviewed
tijdschrift (EBLIP Journal) en publiceert:
oorspronkelijke studies
Ganshorn, http://ejournals.library.ualberta.ca/index.php/EBLIP/issue/view/648
[2] Wederom interessant voorbeeld van Karen Sue Davies,
http://ejournals.library.ualberta.ca/index.php/EBLIP/issue/view/648
4. Dia 4
EBLIP geënt op EBM
Waar hebben we dit eerder gehoord?:
Er zijn 3 hoofdtypen EBLIP vragen: (…EBM)
Exploration (‘etiologie’), Intervention (‘therapie’) en
Prediction (‘prognose’)
EBLIP is een 5 staps methodiek (…EBM):
Ask a focused question (1) (o.a. SPICE vs PICO)
Acquire the evidence (2)
Appraise the studies (3)
Apply the findings (4)
Assess the impact … and your own development (5)
Hoofdtypen EBLIP vragen (lijken op EBM domeinen)
Exploration
What are the possible explanations for X? Why do some potential users not use the library? Meest geëigende study
design: Qualitative research
Intervention
What would we accomplish if we introduced Y? Voorbeeld: Is online instruction more effective than face to face
instruction?
Prediction
What would be the consequences if Z happened? Voorbeeld: What will the impact of open access publishing be on
my organisation’s researchers? As authors, as readers? Study design: Observation / modelling
… waarbij X/Y/Z een bepaald verschijnsel is.
Vijf stappen EBLIP:
(1) A good EBLIP question
Is NOTIsNecessarily sexy (bijv. nwe. technologieën)CurrentExclusively focused on effectiveness issuesFocused on day to day
decision makingRestricted to ”library” matters (bijv. management)Likely to improve quality of professional practiceOnly
addressed by “high quality evidence”Focused on “best available evidence”Only addressed by research literatureInclusive of
user perspectivePotentially answered from broad range of quantitative and qualitative designsDus: gefocust, relevant en
beantwoordbaar.
Voorbeeldvragen:
S – Setting, In which context are you addressing the question?
P – Perspective, Who are the users/potential users of the service?
I – Intervention, What is being done to them/for them?
C – Comparison, What are your alternatives? [Dit is veelal de vorige situatie]
E – Evaluation, How will you measure whether the intervention has succeeded? Aspecten hierbij / ‘uitkomstmaten’: accuratesse,
toepasbaarheid, tevredenheid, kosten.
Voorgrond:
“How does virtual reference desk compare with physical reference desk in terms of cost and patron satisfaction?” (SPICE
elementen ICE).
Achtergrond:
“What methods are available to provide current awareness services to researchers?” (SPICE elementen SP, overview artikelen
beantwoorden dit meestal).
EBLIP onderscheidt 6 aandachtsgebieden:
Reference / Enquiries
Collections
Education / Training (esp. information skills)
Marketing / Promotion [replaced by Professional Issues]
Information access and retrieval
Management
“The domain can point to you the type of literature likely to contain articles pertaining to your topic”.
(2) Acquire the evidence
routine statistics
local & national surveys
research literature
user feedback
staff observations
“good practice”
LIS literatuur:

En verder natuurlijk
Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC)
Social Science Citation Index (SSCI)
etc.
(3) Appraise the studies
Critically appraising
Validity: are the results sound?
Reliability: what are the results?
Applicability: will the results help me?
Appraise Evidence, checklists for appropriate studies (gevalideerd):
information needs analyses (CRISTAL[2])
user studies (CRISTAL)
Interventions addressing the needs for education and training (ReLIANT[3])
EBL Critical Appraisal Tool (Glynn[4])
6. How is appraisal done?
problem or scenario
determine appropriate source
identify relevant article(s)
use appropriate checklist
assess relative merits/demerits
make overall assessment (strength of evidence)
apply findings (strength of recommendations)
Using critical appraisal
reduces uncertainty
allows you to focus on important issues
helps unravel complex problems
harnesses group perspectives, but does not provide simple answers
(4) Apply the findings
1. Integrate EBLIP into recruitment and development (job descriptions, staff appraisal and performance review,)
2. Practice Evidence Based Project Management:[5]
Data: What? Findings
Analysis: So What? Implications
Action: Now What?Recommendations
3. Incorporate evidence review into existing meetings
- don’t initiate EXTRA evidence based meetings
- introducean evidence based component into staff meetings, project meetings, team meetings etc.
4. Utilise evidence based standards and guidelines
5. Implement evidence based webpages[6]
6. Develop evidence based questionnaires
7. Practice evidence based collection management
9. Manage change using evidence based methods (verwijzing naar twee boeken)
10. Evaluate evidence based strategies
Is het de moeite waard?
Begin eenvoudig
Begin van scratch af aan.
(5) Assess the impact … and your own development

workshop 2
Christine Urquhart –
Introduction to Meta-synthesis
Wat is meta-synthesis?
“In health care – lots of randomised control trials – data from different trials can be integrated to
provide a meta-analysis, to help decide whether an intervention is effective or not.”
“In social sciences, different research designs used – cannot simply ‘add up’ the data or the themes
that emerge from the analysis.”
Meta-analyse is onmogelijk bij kwalitatieve data. Vandaar meta-synthesen.
Er zijn 9 verschillende types meta-synthese:
meta-narrative synthesis, critical interpretive synthesis, meta-study, meta-ethnography, grounded
formal theory, thematic synthesis, textual narrative synthesis, framework synthesis and ecological
triangulation.[1]
Er zijn grofweg 3 verschillende benaderingen:
1. Realist review (what Works for whom in what circumstances – aimed at policymakers)
2. Meta-ethnography (reciprocal translational analysis, refutational synthesis and lines of argument
synthesis – similarities, contradictions, weaving a story)
3. Critical interpretive synthesis (is an adaptation of meta-ethnography)
- suitable for examining quantitative and qualitative evidence and trying to integrate some
findings
- works for larger number of studies (meta-ethnography very detailed work)
- still examines contradictions, and flaws in evidence and theory.
[1]

520NCRM.pdf
8. Dia 6
- waarom studenten self-directed learning fijn vinden
Meta-ethnography kan inzicht verschaffen in
- hoe (impliciete en expliciete) verwachtingen van
bibliotheekmedewerkers beinvloedden wat studenten als
belangrijk beschouwden;
- hoe de houding van studenten t.a.v. levenslang leren
en informatievaardigheid wordt bepaald door hun
sociale- en culturele achtergrond.
Critical interpretive synthesis:
“Dixon-Woods et al presented critical interpretive synthesis as an approach to the whole process of review, rather than to just
the synthesis component. It involves an iterative approach to refining the research question and searching and selecting from
the literature (using theoretical sampling) and defining and applying codes and categories. It also has a particular approach to
appraising quality, using relevance – i.e. likely contribution to theory development – rather than methodological characteristics
as a means of determining the „quality of individual papers (Gough 2007). The authors also stress, as a defining characteristic,
critical interpretive synthesis s critical approach to the literature in terms of
deconstructing research traditions or theoretical assumptions as a means of contextualising findings.”[1]
Critical interpretive synthesis is suited to reviews where there is a mix of qualitative and quantitative studies, and a larger
number of studies than can be handled than meta-ethnography.
Meta-ethnography:
“Meta ethnography is a method used to synthesise qualitative research findings. It involves induction and interpretation, and
thus follows a similar approach to the methods of qualitative data analysis used in the studies being synthesised. Through
extracting concepts, metaphors and themes arising from different studies (first order analysis); subjecting these first-order
concepts to interpretive analysis to generate second order concepts; and synthesising these second order concepts through
developing a “line or argument”, meta-ethnography enables the reviewer to understand and synthesise the findings of two or
more qualitative studies concerning a similar research question or topic. In this presentation, the process of meta-ethnography
will be described and illustrated by presenting practical examples of the process-in-use.”[2]
Meta-ethnography is gebaseerd op grounded theory development, zie http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grounded_theory
Meta-ethnography explores and explains differences between the studies in a systematic way. Questions might be explored by
a more in-depth analysis of around five to ten qualitative studies, translating concepts of one study to another.

Peter Brophy – Why narrative-
based practice matters
Why narrative-based practice matters.
Alternatieven?
Onze
antwoorden worden bepaald door onze sociaal-culturele achtergrond. Constant maken we aannames.
learned behaviour (aangeleerd gedrag)
experience.
betekenis toe.
Kritiek Booth: Er zijn 3 soorten narrative:
experience
truth
how we want to remember it
Welke oplossing is hiervoor?

“With Open Access academics give author rights away in return for reputation”

In: Evidence Based Library and Information Practice 2009 (4) 2, p. 78 – 96
maken;
Dimensions of actionable evidence: a Holistic model of evidence based practice for
school libraries
Evidence FOR practice: Informational - Evidence informs practice, gebaseerd op
onderzoek van de best beschikbare empirisch onderzoek;
signaleren en hier aktie op te ondernemen;
librarians doen. De impact.

What? So what? Now what?
- Professionele ontwikkeling? Voorbereiding modules EBP?
* Keynote 3. Geen ‘now what’ aanknopingspunten.
Ontwikkeling veel meer i.s.m.
gebruikers.
starlite etc.)
