2. VERBAL ASPECT: INTRODUCTION Russian verbs, like English verbs, have tense, which indicates whenthe action takes place. In addition to tense, Russian verbs have aspect, which indicates howaction takes place, i.e. whether it is ongoing/repetitive or completed/momentary.
3. Almost all Russian verbs come in two aspects (aspectual pairs): imperfectiveand perfective. Their meaning (i.e. the action they denote) is virtually the same, but they differ in howthe action takes place—they differ in aspect.
4. Compare the following sentences imperfective Анна писала письмо. Anna was writing a letter. Раньше я вставал в 7 часов. In the past I used to get up at 7. Ты учила в школе русский язык? Did you study Russian in school? perfective Анна написала письмо. Anna wrote a letter. Сегодня я встал в 6 часов. Today I got up at 6. Ты выучила русский язык в школе? Did you learn Russian in school?
5. USE OF ASPECT imperfective verbs refer to repeated actions one-time actions where the focus is on the process, and not on the result emphasize the process or duration (i.e. when the amount of time the action takes place is mentioned: весь вечер, два часа) are used when two or more actions take place simultaneously: (мы читали текст и учили слова) can be used in all three tenses (present, past, future) perfective verbs refer to completed, one-time actions with a beginning and an end tend to emphasize result are used when two or more actions occur in sequence: (сначала мы прочитали текст, потом выучили слова) are never used in present tense
6. FORMATION OF IMPERFECTIVE/PERFECTIVE PAIRS. Although you will need to memorize each pair individually, the following 4 patterns for formation of aspectual pairs are useful to know.
