The document discusses a report that urges South Africa to establish a challenge fund to strengthen its competitive edge in the mining equipment sector. South Africa is currently a hub for mining equipment in Africa, but its edge is waning due to declining skills, standards, and research capacity. The report recommends the fund to help the sector develop new products and expand into new areas to maintain global relevance. It also notes that mining has a large impact on South Africa's economy, generating income that circulates throughout other sectors. However, without intervention, South Africa risks losing its competitive advantage in the strategically important mining equipment industry.

The document discusses opportunities for energy sector partnerships between South Africa and Italy in Sub-Saharan Africa. It notes that Sub-Saharan Africa has enormous energy potential and demand that will grow exponentially in coming decades. However, the region also has a large energy gap that hinders growth. South Africa and Italy are well-positioned to partner in areas like oil and gas, renewables like solar and wind, and gas-powered electricity where Italy has significant expertise. There are opportunities for joint ventures between companies on distributed generation and smart grids to help close the energy gap in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The document discusses investment potential in Africa. It notes signs of potential like Rwanda's economic reforms and growth in mobile phone usage. Forecasts predict Sub-Saharan Africa will have steady growth around 4-6% annually through 2019. Foreign trade : Africa’s share declines
The UNCTAD report entitled “Economic Development in Africa 2008” says that the
share of Africa in international trade fell from 6 to 3% in the past two decades despite
efforts to liberalize. The report explains the decline by the difficulty in Africa to produce
goods of the quality and quantity demanded by the international market. It refers among
others to the restrictions imposed in the 1990s on the import of fish from Kenya,
Mozambique, Uganda and Tanzania. Link to the report :
