• Vascular dementia is the second-most-common type of dementia in the United States and Europe in
the elderly, however it is the most common form in some parts of Asia. The incidence of the illness
is 1.5% in Western countries and just about 2.2% in Japan. It accounts for 50% of all dementias in
Japan, 20% to 40% in Europe and 15% in Latin America.
• One study found that in the United States precisely, the prevalence of vascular dementia in all
individualsoverthetimeoflifeof71is2.43%,andanothersetupthattheprevalenceofthedementias
doubles with every 5.1 years of age.
• TheoverallmultiinfarctdementiamarketissegmentedintoNorthAmerica,AsiaPacific,Europe,Latin
AmericaandMEA.Asof2014,NorthAmericaheldlargestmarketshareintermsofrevenueowingto
the increasing incidences of multi infarct dementia coupled with increasing geriatric population base.
• Japan owing to increased geriatric base represents approximately more than 50% of the dementia
cases in Asia Pacific.
• Various companies in the multi infarct dementia market are adopting several economical strategies
such as collaborations, expansions and acquisitions to keep a strong position and gain advantage in
the market.
• Alzheimer’s Research UK currently funds 150 research projects across the UK and has committed
nearly £40million to dementia research.
• TheirresearchwillfocusonimprovingthequalityoflifeofthosealreadylivingwithAlzheimer’sdisease
and other forms of dementia.
• The Alzheimer’s Association funds independent investigators worldwide, they have awarded over
$335 million to more than 2,250 projects.
• Research conducted by the Alzheimer’s Society, shows that there will be 850,000 people living with
dementia in the UK by 2015. This will cost the UK £26 billion a year.
• Two-thirds (£17.4 billion) of the cost of dementia is paid by people with dementia and their families,
either in unpaid care (£11.6 billion) or in paying for private social care.

Almost 40 per cent of people over the age of 65 experience some form of memory loss. When there is no
underlying medical condition causing this memory loss, it is known as “age-associated memory impairment,”
which is considered a part of the normal aging process

A range of tests and diagnostic procedures is needed to diagnose dementia, but there are several that are
fairlycommonlyusedtodiagnosedementia.Thesetestsfordementiaaremainlytestsofmentalabilities,blood
tests and brain scans. Tests can help the doctor learn whether dementia is caused by a treatable condition.
Even for those dementias that cannot be reversed, knowing the type of dementia a person has can help the
doctor prescribe medicines or other treatments that may improve mood and behavior and help the family.

Progressive dementia, which is dementia that gets worse with time, is the most common type. Five stages
of progressive dementia have been outlined. They are part of the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR), which
professionalsusetoevaluatetheprogressionofsymptomsinpatientswithdementia.Thefivestagesdescribea
patient’sabilitytoperforminsixdifferentareasofcognitionandfunctioning:orientation,memory,judgment,
home and hobbies, personal care, and community. The stages include early dementia, Moderate dementia,
Advanced dementia, Test of dementia stages, Advances in research of dementia stages.

Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia can be a challenging journey, not only for the person
diagnosedbutalsofortheirfamilymembersandlovedones.CaringforsomeonewithAlzheimer’sordementia
canseemoverwhelmingattimes,butthemoreinformationandsupportyouhave,thebetteryoucannavigate
thedemandingroadaheadanddeterminethelong-termcareoptionsthatarebestsuitedtoyouandyourloved
one. There are some Alzheimer’s care preparations that are best done sooner rather than later. It may be hard

The mainstay of management of vascular dementia is the prevention of new strokes. This includes

Animal models for Alzheimer’s disease it is important to think about the human phenotype and what is
being modeled in terms of the animal phenotype. The moderator, Bradley Hyman, professor of neurology at
Harvard Medical School, said that animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, based on the genetics of the disease
and the closely related front temporal dementia, replicate at least some of the pathology. Researchers have
been successful at modeling very specific aspects of Alzheimer’s disease in the mouse (e.g., plaques, tangles).
Although these are incomplete models of the human disease, they have been well received in the field as
potentially relevant models for use in drug discovery.

Amsterdam is the capital city and most populous city of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Netherlands government allocate EUR 32.5 million to the fight against Neurological disease over the next four years.
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) provided fund of €550 million to fuel the research on mental
illness. NARSAD Young Investigator Grant provides $30,000 per year on research in Neural and behavior disorders such
as schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, or child and adolescent mental illnesses.
