3. One cannot truly love God without faith. The command to love
God in the Bible was only entrusted to those who have faith in the
True and Living God. In other words, to those who are
Believers/Christians. (Deut. 6:4)
“Dinggin ninyo mga Israelita: si YHWH lamang ang Diyos, Ibigin
Ninyo siya ng buong puso, kaluluwa at lakas”
INTRO:
4. Heb. 11:6 says: “For without faith, it is impossible to please
God. To Love God is to please Him. Loving God is the result of faith in
Him.
Today is what we call LOVE MONTH, but as always, this
tradition always centers on man’s love to man. But this time, we will
talk about LOVE that is directed to GOD.
5. In our text, we can learn some principles of Love that is
directed to God, expressed by a woman to JESUS.
What’s the story all about?
How did the woman express her Love to Jesus?
What can we learn about the nature of Love in the Story?
6. A. WHAT IS THE STORY ALL ABOUT?
1. The story is all about the Pharisee who invited Jesus
(v.36) “The Pharisee invited Jesus to have dinner with him in his house.”
2. Who are the Pharisees?
PHARISEES- Derived from the Heb. Word “Parash” which means to
divide or separate. They are the separated ones.
-Ito’y isang pangkat ng mga Judio sa panahon ni Jesus. Sila’y mahigpit sa
pagsunod sa kautusan ni Moises at sa mga alituntuning idinagdag dito.
7. In Matt. 23: 1-28 describes clearly who they are:
They were hypocrites because they did not live up to their own high
standard of righteousness.
They laid burden upon others which themselves were unwilling to bear
(v.4)
They glorified their own righteousness and did good works only to be
seen by men. (v. 5-12)
John the Baptist called them brood vipers (Mt. 3:7); Jesus seconded this
verdict in Mt. 23:33- “ahas lahing mga ulopong”
Jesus added they were whitened sepulcheres
They were blind leaders of the blind (Mt. 23: 13-15)
8. 3. What is the Purpose of the Invitation?
To have dinner, to entrap Jesus rather than to learn from Him.
-It Appears that this Pharisee did not believe Jesus, for he will not acknowledge him
even to be a Prophet. (v.39)
The invitation was an act of Hypocricy.
-But all of these are not hidden in Jesus, for He knows everything even the intention
of the Heart (v.40)
-Yet the Lord accepted the invitation, went to the Pharisees’ house and reclined at
the table.
-In fact, these Pharisees are accusing Him in (v.34) “Masdan ninyo ang taong ito
matakaw at maglalasing, kaibigan ng mga publican at mga makasalanan.”
-Despite of this, JESUS accepted the invitation because JESUS is no respecter of
person.
9. 4. The Story is all about the Woman who is a Sinner (v.37)
WHO IS THE WOMAN?
a. The woman-is a sinner- “isang kilalang makasalanan”
-The women is a prostitute
b. But the woman has a right concept about GOD.
-She knew that Jesus accepts all who come to Him with a humble heart.
- She knew that God shows no favoritism.
- She knew the nature of God in Psa. 103:8-12
- She knew Mt. 9:12-13, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick.
For I have not come to call the righteous but sinners.
- She knew that Jesus has the authority to forgive.
- She knew that Jesus is the Savior.
10. B. HOW DID THE WOMAN EXPRESS HER LOVE TO JESUS
1. Her Love is VOLUNTARY
She express her Love Voluntarily
11. She came voluntarily without an invitation (v.37)
When she learned that Jesus was at the Pharisees’ house, she did
not waste time. Instead, she took the opportunity.
NOTE: Our text shows that this woman was sinful, a prostitute,
unfamous. It was not common for uninvited guest to be found at a
banquet and among them was a woman well known as a
prostitute.
Such dinner involving dignitaries were open to expectators, but
no one would have expected a prostitute to attend. It was
shocking to all for a woman of such low reputation to come to a
pharisees’ house.
12. But despite this, she did not look on herself but to the one
she love, who forgives a sinner like her.
She did not look on the people around him, like the
Pharisees who are critics and judgmental.
Instead, she came to JESUS acknowledging Him as her Lord,
she acknowledge as well that she is a sinner who needs a
SAVIOR.
This shows that her Faith moves her whole being to come
voluntarily to show her Faith in public and her love
personally to JESUS.
13. “LOVE IS VOLUNTARY, It does not wait
for others to do it, But always Finds and
Grabs every Opportunity to Express LOVE.”
-Ernie
14. 2. Her Love is INTENTIONAL
It is an act of the will- you don’t feel it, you decide to give it.
It’s a burning desire that no one can hinder, it is a determination.
The woman knows how to express her Love.
A. She bought an Alabaster Jar of perfume (v. 37b)
-very possibly bought with her immoral earning for the very
purpose.
- Mark set the value at more than 200 denarii (Mrk. 14:5) nearly
a years wages.
-Olive Oil is for ordinary used in anointing guest’s head and it is
cheap, but perfume is costly.
15. B. She had prepared for this intentionally- bought the perfume
for the purpose of serving JESUS.
“LOVE IS ALWAYS PREPARED TO SERVE”
“LOVE IS AN INTENTIONAL MATTER… You don’t wait to feel
it, you decide to give it.”
16. 3. Her Love is COSTLY, But She Does not Count the Cost (v. 38c)
“pinahiran ng pabango ang paa”
1 Chro. 21:24, David said to Ornan: “I will not offer to the
Lord which cost me nothing”
“Anything greater if costly”
“When you value God, in your life, things have become of
little value.”
17. 4. Her Love is a HUMBLE SERVICE
She stood behind Jesus at his feet weeping
She came with deep humiliation because of sin, acknowledging she
was a forgiven sinner (walang pagmamalaki katulad ng Paraseo Lu 18:
9-14)
The service of Love is Humility.
She did not look in the face of Jesus but came behind and did the part
of a maid/servant.
With deep renewed sorrow for sin, she began weeping, begun to wet
his feet- broken heart.
18. a) By washing His feet with her Tears
After bowing, greeting and kissing, the eastern guest is offered water for
feet washing. A servant will assist the guest by pouring the water upon his
feet over a copper basin, rubbing the feet with his hands and wiping them
with napkin.
But the woman wash JESUS’ feet with her tears and wipe his feet with
her hair, a tear of Joy, a great delight, to find herself so near her savior whom
she loved.
Hindi niya inalintana na magulo ang kanyang buhok.
19. b) By Kissing His feet
c) By Bowing
When a guest is received into an oriental home, bowing between the
host and the guest is quite to take place.
In the East, there is a more expressive custom of saluting with the head
erect and the body a little inclined forward, by raising the hand to the heart,
mouth and forehead.
The symbolic meaning of this action is to say something like this: “My
heart, my voice, my brain, are all at your service.”
20. This is the service of Love, all at the service of the beloved.
It is humiliating in the eyes of people but it raises the level of
spirituality. It pleases God and gives glory and honor to Him.
Love is express boldly, courageously thinking no other except
the one who is Love.
21. 5. TRUE LOVE IS FOCUS ON OTHERS NOT ON SELF (v. 39)
Proud, self righteous and hypocrisy of religion cannot offer true love and
worship because of focus on men & self, and not GOD.
Self righteous people always condemn, always prejudice to people even to
God.
Self righteous people cannot see God, dahil sa pagmamatuwid sa sarili ang
laging nakikita.
LOVE IS NOT PROUD & WORSHIP IS BROKENESS OF HEART- Realizing
that we are nothing before God, but a slave offering sacrifices, a forgiven
sinner offering service to God.
22. 6. TRUE LOVE TO GOD IS THE OUTCOME OF FORGIVESS (v. 40-43)
By a parable, Jesus teach this principle.
In the parable, there are two debtor. One is 500 denarii (2 yrs
salary), the other is 50 denarii (50 days wage). Both were not able to
pay but both were forgiven and their debt were cancelled.
23. 50 represents the Pharisee by his own self estimation- lesser debtor yet
more than he thought of himself.
500 represents the woman who was the greater debtor. This shows that
in the eyes of God, whether our debt is more or less by our own estimation
it is more than we are able to pay. They had nothing to pay nothing at all to
make a payment with. No righteousness of our own will pay it. But the
God of heaven is ready to forgive poor sinners. If we repent and believe in
Christ. Our iniquity shall not be laid at our charge.
24. It shows in this Parable that:
-Those who estimate themselves with greater sin, are greater
forgiven. Shows greater Love.
- Those who estimate themselves with lesser sin, are forgiven less.
Shows less Love.
But in the eyes of God, there is no such greater or small sin for we
are all great sinners. And cannot pay our debt to God.
And because we are forgiven, we are oblige to love Him and the
more we are forgiven, the more we should love Him.
25. In the eyes of God, you do not have the right to estimate
yourself or even to judge others. Instead, humble yourself to
God with a repentant heart and offer great Love and Worship to
God.
It is shameful when we judge or estimate others with their
standing on God. God might say to us the same with the
Pharisee.
DO YOU SEE THIS WOMAN? (v.44)
26. True Love and Worship that will bring us greater Love and
worship to God is when we acknowledge that we are a sinner
unable to save ourselves, but only by the grace of God.
“LOVING GOD IS THE PROOF OF FORGIVENESS-AND THE MORE
A PERSON IS FORGIVEN, THE MORE HE WILL LOVE”
v. 48-50- Forgiveness is a Divine Prerogative, True Love results in
Peace.
27. Do you see yourself in this message?
How will you grade your love to God?
How worthy is your love to Jesus?
Will you offer Him everything that is Cost to you?
28.
29. Into your hands
I commit again
With all I am for You, Lord
You hold my world
In the palm of Your hand
And I am Your forever
30. Jesus I believe in You
Jesus I belong To You
You’re the reason that I live
The reason that I sing
with all I am
31. I’ll walk with you
Wherever You go
Through tears and joy
I’ll trust in You
And I will live
In all of Your ways
And Your promises, forever
